Ante-natal Exercises
It's never too early to start a low-impact, doctor-approved exercise routine. It will help you manage the extra weight you'll be gaining, and help you get ready for the physical rigors of labour.
The extra pounds that you gain during pregnancy, does make it especially important to watch your posture. Adopting the correct posture during pregnancy helps reduce the risk of back injuries. You should:
Stand straight
Bend your legs instead of your back when picking up or lifting things.
Stay out of high-heeled shoes.
Do not stand for long periods.
Your posture when you stand :
Keep your shoulders back and drop them slightly
Keep your back straight
Tuck your bottom in
Lift your chest and ribs
Tighten your stomach muscles
Slightly bend your knees
Keep your feet slightly apart
Your posture when you sit
Sit up straight on a chair that supports your back well. Use a pillow if necessary to further support your back.
Getting Up
Roll onto your side and use your arms to help push yourself up. This will help protect back and abdominal muscles.
Picking Up Objects
Regular Exercise
Regular and gentle exercise is a good idea, as long as your pregnancy (or previous ones) are uncomplicated. Exercise helps promote good posture, tone and strengthen muscles in areas that are under stress (particularly your back, abdomen and pelvis). It also improves blood circulation and helps you feel better emotionally.
Walking or swimming are good exercises when you are pregnant. Do some stretching before you start, and eat some food containing carbohydrate an hour before you exercise.
Avoid strenuous activity or sports involving sudden movements, particularly in the later months of your pregnancy.
Here are some simple exercises (that you should discuss with your doctor before starting). You can also check out antenatal exercise classes available at some hospitals. |

Exercise for your back, thigh and pelvic muscles
Squat down with your feet turned out slightly. Your heels should be flat on the floor and your back straight. Press your elbows against your thighs to stretch your thigh muscles. Stay in this position as long as it is comfortable.
You can use a chair to help support you as you squat. If you find it difficult in keeping your feet flat on the floor, place a folded blanket under your heels.
