Malaysia's Future Air Defence Requirements
01/12/07 - TEMPUR NOVEMBER 2007

In order to establish a hierarchical, layered and in-depth national air defence system, the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) has projected a requirement for a minimum of 20 Batteries of enhanced short-range air defence systems (E-SHORADS), three Batteries of medium-range surface-to-air missiles (M-SAM), an additional 200 very short-range SAMs (VSHORADS), six gapfiller ra** and a similar number of low-probability-of-intercept (LPI) tactical air defence ra**, plus four passive surveillance systems (PSS), all during the current 9th Malaysia Plan (2006-2010) and following 10th Malaysia Plan (2011-1015). While the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) and Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) are in favour of acquiring the M-SAMs, E-SHORADS, and the FN-6 VSHORADS (from China抯 CPMIEC) to replace the existing THALES Starburst VSHORADS, the Malaysian Army is known to prefer acquiring the E-SHORADS and maintaining its existing VSHORADS assets (KBM of Russia抯 Igla-1, Pakistan抯 Institute of Industrial Control Systems-built Anza Mk2 and the soon-to-be-acquired FN-6) in service along with the MBDA-built Jernas SHORADS. For the M-SAM requirement, the principal contenders include the CPMIEC-built Kai Shan KS-1A, Russia抯 Ulyanovsk Mechanical Plant JSC抯 Buk-M2E and MBDA抯 Aster-15, while the E-SHORADS contenders will reportedly include the MBDA-built Spada 2000, Tula-based KBP Instrument Design Bureau of Russia抯 96K6 Pantsyr-S1E and Almaz-Antey Concern抯 Tor-M2E, Bodenseewerk Geratecknik of Germany抯 vertically launched Iris-T, and Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems

Bagi saya, KS-1 dah nampak kuno sgt dah.  Bile kite dapat bende ni 5-10 tahun dr sekarang dah jadi antik.AKu dengar MAF sendiri tak suka KS-1.

Bagi aku pembelian ni akan bawak byk kesusahan kpd MAF sepertimana pembelian Mig-29.All for so called 'National Interest' at the cost of taxpayer;s miney and national security.

cummon man,kalau nak beli,biar la betul2.mahal skit takpe la..what is important is that the system wll be effective when called upon to defend the nation,and not some 'tukun laut' system that only looks like one but doesn't function as well against current and future threats.

All because of that pencil looking FN-6 manpads and I red that PLA dun use FN-6 anymore   and only give them to Chinese peasant conscript in the farms.

Malaysia should lose the notion of manufacturing arms locally. Look at Steyr..habuk pun takde plus NGPV..losing $$$ by tons..if it was to create expertise, sending our engineers to build NGPV would have sufficed....no need to reinvent the whee and losing $$$ at the same timel!!!

Guyz, dengo hearsay this FN-6 memang dah masuk dalam inventori tapi tak banyak maybe few units sahaja masa heboh our army wanted this KS-1A. FN-6 ni pun cuma gula-gula for the future would be KS-1A should we decided as a TOT. Alih-alih tembelang sudah pecah pasal the armed force was fed with false fact says that PRC has been equipped with this KS-1A walhal fakta tu tak betul so our planner dah tolak KS-1A ni. Anyway ni cuma hearsay sahaja le!

amin. KS-1 mmg patut ditolak bulat2. Hope the MAF is more assertive in future procurements.They should take advantage of the political climate to be more transparent.
