Tymoshchuk Would Love To Emulate Lothar Matthaus At Bayern Munich
Fresh from having formally agreed a deal to join Bayern Munich from Zenit St. Petersburg in the summer, Ukrainian midfielder Anatoliy Tymoshchuk knew just what to say to endear himself to his new fans...
Earlier this week, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk became the third player to agree to a summer switch to the Allianz Arena, with Hamburg striker Ivica Olic and Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Alexander Baumjohann already signed up.
The 29-year-old talked up the Bundesliga in his first interview with the Bild newspaper since signing on for Bayern, describing it as "one of the best league's in the world.
"All of the teams play a good football at a high level.
"There are so many teams currently fighting for the title, right down to eighth place, and that shows how high the level of the league is," he added, before hitting another positive note from the a Bayern fan perspective by exalting one of their all-time greats.
"The way that Lothar Matthaus played inspired me (and) his charisma as a leading player and his talent in dictating a game," Tymoshchuk gushed.
Bayern fans will also be happy to hear that their latest addition for next season is already well versed in German.
"I understand the language well because I learned it in school," he revealed. "I speak fluent German.
"I know there are a lot of very long words which are hard to pronounce, but seriously, I know enough words to get by in day-to-day life."
Zenit have managed to negotiate a deal which will see Tymoshchuk stay with them on loan until mid-June - although his original contract was set to expire on February 28 - meaning that he will be able to help them in their defence of the UEFA Cup crown.

rensing; we owe fans an apology
Bayern Munich goalkeeper Michael Rensing insisted his side owe their fans an apology after they slumped to their third loss in four league games yesterday with a 2-1 defeat by Cologne. Bayern found themselves 2-0 down to a mediocre Cologne side at half-time at Munich's Allianz Arena and although Belgian defender Daniel van Buyten pulled a goal back with time running out, it was not enough. Bayern have lost to Hamburg, Hertha Berlin and now Cologne in their last four league games and could drop to fifth in the table if Bayer Leverkusen beat Hamburg today.
"I believe that after today we must apologise to all our fans for this defeat," said Rensing. "The first half time was inexplicably bad, Cologne could have won by more. Today was one of those days when nothing went right. We didn't deserve a point, never mind a win. If we had not acted so stupidly, we would already be top of the league. That is irritating."
First-half goals by Cologne's French midfielder Fabrice Ehret and teenage debutant Daniel Brosinski meant the guests were 2-0 up at half-time and never looked like losing. It was hardly the ideal warm-up for Bayern's UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first-leg tie on Wednesday against Sporting Lisbon in Portugal and chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said it was a bad day at the office.
"Until today, we had played well, even in our defeats at Hamburg and Hertha, but today for the first time we played badly," he said. "We need to get out of this rut very quickly, starting with Wednesday's game in Lisbon."
And Germany striker Lukas Podolski, making his first start after three months on the sidelines, lasted just 45 minutes before he was subsituted. Podolski, voted the best young player at the last FIFA World Cup |

Rudi Voeller Has No Plans To Become Sports Director At Bayern Munich
Rudi Voeller appears to have taken himself out of the running for the chance to succeed Uli Hoeness at Bayen Munich…
Bayer Leverkusen sports director Rudi Voeller has for the first time reacted publicly to the reports suggesting that he is one of the frontrunners to take over the same role at Bayern Munich.
Uli Hoeness has already confirmed that he is stepping down from the post at the end of 2009 to take up a place on the board, meaning that one of the most coveted positions in German sport is opening up.
“That’s a nice little story,” said Voeller without a hint of sarcasm, when pressed on the rumours by a reporter at Spox.
“It feels to be good to be mentioned as a candidate but at the moment there should be nod doubt that I am staying in Leverkusen.”

Podolski’s return to club:pompom:
BERLIN: Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has paid €875 to help finance the return of striker Lukas Podolski to FC Cologne, the Bundesliga club said.
Germany international Podolski recently signed to rejoin his former club from Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
Schumacher bought several pixel areas on the club’s website at €25 apiece and if all 37,500 pixels that make up a digital Podolski portrait are sold, the club will eventually make just under €1mil to go towards covering part of the €10mil transfer fee.
“So, boy, you decided to follow your heart ... Now you can show what you’ve got and allow all FC fans to celebrate again,” Schumacher wrote in a message on the club’s website (
