Tennis: FedEx closes in on elusive dream

Roger Federer must overcome Rafael Nadal at some point if he is to lift
the French crown.

PARIS: Roger Federer has virtually everything any 25-year-old tennis player could want.

Some US$30 million (RM105 million) in prize money tucked away in the bank, 10 Grand Slam titles, at least three languages comfortably mastered and the respect and admiration of peers, fans and media.

What he doesn抰 have is a French Open title.

However, there抯 no shortage of people queuing up to tell him how to secure that elusive honour.

What has always been mission impossible for the likeable Swiss is how to inflict a first ever Roland Garros defeat on nemesis Rafael Nadal.
He has solved part of the mystery himself by beating the Spaniard for the first time in six clay court meetings in the Hamburg Masters final last Sunday.

"I played fantastic and I really got the feeling in the end I had figured out how to play him," said Federer after his 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 win brought Nadal抯 81-match winning streak on clay to en end.

"But I have to be very careful not to get too carried away."

Federer may have learned crucial lessons from seeing Lleyton Hewitt push the Spaniard all the way in the semi-finals in Germany.

"Nadal is the best player on clay, no doubt about that," said the Australian who took the first set in their last four clash.

"He is extremely tough. There are no cheap points against him. You抳e got to go out there and beat him. When he is front-running, he is one of the best in the business."

Hewitt intentionally forced the pace and came to the net although the inevitable fall-out was 43 unforced errors compared to Nadal抯 25.

Most observers believe that if Federer is to beat the two-time defending champion, and clinch a title which would make him just the third man to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time, he needs to repeat his Hamburg formula.

There he made a conscious effort to shorten the points; only seven points lasted 10 strokes or more. He was also keen to attack the Nadal forehand.

But the Swiss is right not to get too confident.

By common consent, the clay court in Hamburg is a markedly different beast to the Philippe Chatrier court at Roland Garros. The German surface is much slower and the bounce lower.

Furthermore, Nadal, who has already won the Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome titles on clay this year, admitted that he was exhausted by the time the Hamburg final arrived.

Federer split with coach Tony Roche after his shock second round exit in Rome but one man he won抰 be calling for advice is former triple French Open champion Mats Wilander.

The Swede accused Federer of being "frightened" of facing Nadal after the Spaniard cruised to a 6-4, 6-4 win in the Monte Carlo final.

"Nadal is left-handed, he is able to find Federer抯 backhand all the time in the serve and it抯 not a good mix," Wilander said after the final.

"Nadal is one of those young guys who really is not afraid of anybody, it doesn抰 matter if his name is Roger Federer and he has won 10 majors or whatever, Nadal is just not afraid."

But Wilander offered some hope to Federer even before the Hamburg turnaround.

"I think on paper Federer might be the favourite (to win the French Open) because he will be really focused on winning Roland Garros," added the Swede.

"He knows time is running out to win Roland Garros. He is not going to win it three times and I think he knows that. He抯 going to win it once, maybe twice, and I think this is the year to do it.

"If Nadal does not go through, Federer will win the French Open."

Federer arrived early in Paris.

Interestingly, he already had Nadal on his mind as he chose to train with France抯 current world number one junior Jonathan Eyserric

Sampras, Federer will play exhibitions in Asia

HONG KONG -- Pete Sampras will play top-ranked Roger Federer in three exhibition matches throughout Asia in November.

Sampras, who retired in 2002, will challenge Federer on Nov. 22 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Two days later, they will play at the Chinese gambling enclave of Macau. The location for the third match on Nov. 20 has not been determined.<br />

"I am so excited to play Pete and I am really looking forward to visiting Malaysia for the first time," Federer said. "There is no doubt that we will play some great tennis."

The exhibitions originated after Sampras invited Federer to practice at his home in Los Angeles as part of Federer's preparations for the Indian Wells tournament in March.

"Obviously he's a great player, but I felt like I didn't embarrass myself out there," Sampras said. "I feel like I can hold my own."

The 35-year-old Sampras said his strategy for beating Federer, who is 10 years younger, is to stay aggressive.

"Roger's game doesn't have many cracks," Sampras said. "It's one of those sorts of matchups where I just need to overwhelm him with some power and try to come in and hopefully serve well."

In their only ATP matchup, Federer beat Sampras 7-6 (7), 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5 in the round of 16 at Wimbledon in 2001 .

ROLAND GARROS

Fans Declare Federer the Favorite for Roland Garros Title

As Roger Federer begins his 2007 Roland Garros campaign Monday, tennis fans have declared that the ATP World No.1 is the favorite to win the title. Perhaps surprisingly, a poll of 10,000 ATPtennis.com fans found that Federer is an overwhelming favorite to take the French crown ahead of two-time defending champion Rafael Nadal, who has a perfect 14-0 record at the event.

More than one third of fans - 37 percent - declared Federer the outright favorite, with 28 percent of fans saying that Nadal is most likely to take the title and join Bjorn Borg as the only players to have won three consecutive French Opens.

Federer claimed his first win in six clay court meetings with Nadal one week ago in the final of Masters Series Hamburg, giving him an enormous confidence boost leading into Roland Garros.

Who fans say is the Roland Garros favorite

Henin, Serena Williams win after rain delay at French Open

PARIS (AP): Justine Henin and Serena Williams both had to wait through more than five hours of rain to reach the second round at the French Open.

The big difference: Williams struggled before her match was delayed, and Henin struggled before hers even started.

"I was playing more patient and I was doing what I've been practicing,'' said Williams, who eventually beat Bulgarian teenager Tsvetana Pironkova 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 Sunday. "I guess it just didn't work out in the first set.''

Henin, however, had little trouble beating Elena Vesnina of Russia 6-4, 6-3 on a day when only seven of the 24 scheduled matches even began at Roland Garros.

But she was annoyed with starting a Grand Slam tournament on a Sunday and the rain delay.

"The weather is appalling, and it's going to be the same throughout the weeks,'' said Henin, who is trying to win her third straight French Open title and fourth overall.

It certainly was the same Monday, when the start of play was delayed by more rain. But the tournament finally got going again after a three-hour delay.

Ten-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer was to play against Michael Russell, with 2003 champion Juan Carlos Ferrero, No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko and No. 5 Fernando Gonzalez also in action.

On the women's side, Venus Williams was to face Alize Cornet. Jelena Jankovic and Nadia Petrova also were scheduled to play.

Sunday's early sunshine gave way to overcast skies just before play started at 11 a.m. (0900 GMT). About an hour into the opening six matches, play was called with only Marat Safin having earned a win _ he beat Fernando Vicente of Spain 6-1, 6-3, 6-1.

Henin was next up on center court, but she had to wait out more than 5{ hours of rain before playing.

"Winning today is all that counts,'' Henin said. "It was a bit tiring to play in these weather conditions.''

The top-ranked Belgian will next face Tamira Paszek of Austria, who was one game away from the second round when rain halted her match. She returned to the court and beat Aiko Nakamura of Japan 6-4, 6-0.

"We stopped the match 20 minutes before the end of the other matches, which wasn't easy for me,'' Paszek said. "I had to wait five hours in the locker room.''

If Henin and Williams keep winning, they'll face each other in the quarterfinals _ in what would be a rematch of their contentious 2003 meeting at Roland Garros.

In the semifinals that year, Henin beat Williams in three sets. Henin's victory sent her on to the first of her five Grand Slam titles, while Williams' loss ended a 33-match winning streak at majors.

They have played twice since, though not in France. Williams won both matches, including the final at Key Biscayne, Florida, in March.

Henin, however, was looking no further than her next match against Paszek, who took her to three sets earlier this year in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

"In Dubai it was a different situation, a different type of surface,'' Henin said. "But I can tell you that Paszek is very talented. She's a winner.''

Also, Safin's younger sister, Dinara Safina, defeated Yuliana Fedak of Ukraine 7-5, 6-4. On the men's side, Potito Starace of Italy beat Ivo Minar of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (5), and Janko Tipsarevic defeated Dusan Vemic 7-6 (3), 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in an all-Serb match.

Williams, an eight-time Grand Slam champion who won her only French Open title in 2002, was broken four times in the first set, and again in the opening game of the second. But she soon found her rhythm and cruised past Pironkova by winning 12 of the final 13 games.

"I've never gone down in the first round,'' said Williams, who won the Australian Open earlier this year and is 30-0 in the first round of Grand Slam tournaments. "I can breathe now. My goal is to stay not losing in the first round of a Grand Slam.''
