DISERANG SAKIT JANTUNG KETIKA IKUTI KURSUS DI AS
Pengurus jururawat di TTSH meninggal selepas mengadu sukar bernafas

DISEBABKAN minat mendalami bidang penjagaan pesakit tua atau geriatrik, seorang pengurus jururawat di Hospital Tan Tock Seng (TTSH), Cik Norinah Bukari, dipilih mengikuti kursus selama sebulan di Saint Louise, Amerika Syarikat.
Tetapi malang memang tidak berbau.
Kurang dari dua minggu di sana, Allahyarhamha Norinah, 40-an tahun, meninggal dunia akibat serangan jantung.
Allahyarhamha meninggal dunia 29 November lalu selepas mengadu sukar bernafas ketika di bilik hotelnya.
Jenazahnnya hanya dapat diterbangkan pulang ke tanah air 1 dinihari semalam dan segera dikebumikan di Pusara Abadi pada paginya.
Bagai sudah jatuh ditimpa tangga bagi keluarga Allahyarhamha.
Ini kerana bapa mentua Allahyarhamha meninggal dunia sehari sebelum arwah berangkat ke Amerika pada 16 November lalu.
Ibu tiga anak dan didaftarkan sebagai jururawat berdaftar sejak 1986, Allahyarhamha dipercayai mempunyai masalah kolesterol sebelum ini.
Allahyarhamha bertugas di Jabatan Perubatan Geriatrik TTSH.
Beliau yang juga merupakan anggota Jawatankuasa Persatuan Jururawat mengikuti kursus di Amerika itu di bawah Program Pembangunan Tenaga Manusia Kesihatan (HMDP) SingHealth.
Di bawah program itu, mereka yang dipilih daripada bidang perubatan, kejururawatan, penjagaan kesihatan dan pentadbiran berpeluang meningkatkan kemahiran di institusi terkenal di negara seperti Amerika, Jerman dan Taiwan.
Kunjungan wartawan dan jurufoto Berita Harian ke flat lima bilik Allahyarhamha di Blok 539, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10, disambut anak sulung lelaki Allahyarhamha.
Dengan ringkas, beliau yang tidak memberi namanya, berkata bahawa keluarganya dirundung sedih dan meminta agar tidak diganggu.
'Jenazah telah selamat tiba dari Amerika awal pagi tadi dan sempat dibawa ke rumah. Dan jenazah ibu (Allahyarhamha) juga sudah selamat disemadikan dan itu sahaja yang kami mahukan buat masa ini,' katanya tanpa mengulas lebih lanjut.
Di belakang, kedengaran suara bapanya yang meminta anaknya memohon maaf kerana tidak dapat menyambut kedatangan wartawan Berita Harian.
Rakan sekerja Allahyarhamha, yang tidak mahu namanya disebutkan ketika dihubungi semalam, menyatakan 'kami turut terperanjat apabila menerima berita itu.
'Allahyarhamha seorang yang peramah dan suka membantu. Ini satu pemergian mengejut,' tambah beliau yang berusia 42 tahun.

Istilah itu bererti jantung dan otot jantung yang berhenti berfungsi.Keluarga beliau juga menjelaskan bahawa Allahyarhamha meninggal duniadi Hospital Universiti St Louis, Amerika Syarikat, dan bukan di bilikhotel seandainya laporan semalam memberi gambaran sedemikian.

PRIMA TUTUP KILANG DUA HARI
KILANG membuat pelbagai jenis roti, Prima, di Keppel Road ditutup semalam dan hari ini menyusuli laporan kes keracunan makanan.
Penutupan itu bertujuan membolehkan kerja-kerja pembersihan dijalankan di dalam kilang tersebut.
Baru-baru ini, lebih 100 orang dilaporkan mengalami keracunan makanan dalam 10 hari lalu selepas dipercayai memakan kek coklat yang dibuat syarikat tersebut.
Enam daripada mereka yang dilaporkan jatuh sakit terpaksa dirawat di hospital dan disahkan dijangkiti salmonella enteritidis dengan menunjukkan gejala-gejala seperti demam, cirit-birit, muntah-muntah dan sakit di bahagian perut.
Namun, mereka semua kini sudah dibenarkan pulang.
Sebagai langkah berhati-hati, syarikat itu telah menghentikan semua pengiriman barangan segar ke semua 39 kedainya di serata pulau.
Sebaliknya, kesemua kedai roti itu kini menjual wafel di kedai masing-masing atau menjual roti dan pastri yang dibekukan buat masa ini.
Kementerian Kesihatan (MOH) pertama kali dimaklumkan mengenai kes-kes keracunan itu pada 23 November lalu.
Sejak itu, lebih banyak kes timbul dalam beberapa hari.
Siasatan awal menunjukkan satu faktor yang berkaitan dalam semua kes tersebut adalah semua pesakit dilaporkan memakan kek coklat buatan syarikat atau kedai Prima Deli.
Kek-kek itu dibeli dan dimakan seawal 19 November lalu.
Setakat ini, MOH telah menerima lapan kes keracunan makanan akibat memakan kek coklat syarikat tersebut.
Kali terakhir orang diketahui jatuh sakit selepas memakan kek coklat tersebut ialah pada 26 November lalu.
Sebagai langkah berhati-hati, MOH dan Penguasa Pertanian-Makanan dan Ternakan (AVA) telah membuat pemeriksaan di kilang Prima Food sejak tiga hari lalu untuk memastikan ia memenuhi peraturan kebersihan dan kesihatan yang ditetapkan.
Hampir kesemua pekerja yang datang kerja ke kilang di Keppel Road itu semalam mendapat kejutan kerana disuruh pulang.

BALIK KERJA TERKEJUT TINGKAP TERBUKA

MEREKA merupakan pasangan suami isteri yang lebih suka 'bersendirian'.
Lantas, semua tingkap koridor dan pintu flat mereka di Choa Chu Kang North 7, tidak pernah dibiarkan terbuka.
Justeru, Cik Siti (bukan nama sebenar) dan suaminya, Encik Zaki (bukan nama sebenar) begitu cemas apabila mendapati sebuah tingkap flat mereka retak dan terbuka ketika pulang dari kerja sekitar 6.45 petang kelmarin.
Malah, jeriji besi tingkap turut ternganga - tanda dipaksa buka.
Cik Siti, seorang eksekutif perniagaan berusia 29 tahun, yang berpuasa sunat, terus terlupa berbuka akibat flatnya dipecah masuk.
Menyingkap kejadian itu ketika ditemui semalam, Cik Siti berkata bahawa beliau dan suaminya, 33 tahun, keluar rumah sekitar 8 pagi untuk menghantar satu-satu anak mereka ke rumah ibunya di blok berdekatan.
Namun, ketika pulang ke flat mereka itulah, rasa takut mencerut hati apabila melihat tingkap yang retak dan terbuka.
Mereka tambah terkejut apabila mendapati bahawa bilik tidur utama digeledah dan barang-barang bertaburan.
Wang tunai $1,700 dan RM700 ($300) di atas meja pula lesap.
'Duit Singapura itu sebenarnya lebihan duit untuk dibagi-bagi semasa Hari Raya. Anehnya satu susunan duit $2 pula dia tak ambil,' ujarnya.
Encik Zaki, seorang jurutera, percaya beg kitar semula yang digunakan untuk menyimpan buku anaknya turut lesap.
'Mungkin pencuri pakai untuk isi duit-duit yang dicuri,' kata Cik Siti lagi.
Sesiapa yang mempunyai maklumat mengenai kejadian tersebut diminta menghubungi polis di talian 1800-255-0000.

COE prices fall across the board

SINGAPORE: COE prices for vehicles fell across the board in the latest bidding exercise.
The biggest drop was for big cars, which plunged S$3,287 to S$13,114.
For small cars (1,600cc and below), the COE price was S$2,403 lower at S$12,001, while that for the open category dropped by S$1,500 to S$15,501.
Meanwhile, the COE premium for goods vehicles and buses declined by S$1,389 to S$13,000.

Police issue warning as more kidnap scam calls reported

SINGAPORE: Kidnap scam calls have made a comeback.
On 3rd December alone, police said that eight such calls were reported.
The callers threatened members of the public that their next-of-kin would be harmed unless money was transferred to them.
In some instances, cries of help could be heard from the purported kidnap victim during the phone conversations.
However, all the allegations were found to be untrue and no one had been kidnapped.
In view of such cases, the police advise the public to be careful and not fall prey to these scams.
If you do get such a call, remain calm and call the police immediately after the call.
Police investigations on these cases are on-going.

30 samples from Prima Food factory sent for testing

SINGAPORE : The temporary shutdown of PrimaDeli retail outlets took effect on Wednesday, and officials from the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) have taken at least 30 samples from the Prima Food factory in Keppel Road for testing.
No stone is left unturned as officials try to get to the bottom of the food poisoning outbreak which affected 109 people, who had eaten chocolate cakes from PrimaDeli.
In a statement, the company said its Prima Taste products are manufactured in a separate and independent facility and so Prima Taste products are safe for consumption.
Officials from the AVA continue to investigate at what is believed to be the source of the food poisoning outbreak.
They collected samples of ingredients from the Prima Food factory, which has been ordered to shut down temporarily.
The samples will be tested and AVA will be reviewing the case using what is called the hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) system.
Diana Koh, Head (Food Factory Control), Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority, said: "When AVA is satisfied with the hygiene conditions of the factory, and that the HACCP system, which is the food safety system, has been strengthened, then AVA will consider lifting the suspension of the operations."
So far, two workers at the factory have tested positive for Salmonella, a bacteria that causes food poisoning.
In a statement, Prima Food's General Manager Lewis Cheng assured that before employment, all PrimaDeli staff are medically screened and have met with the medical requirements stipulated by the authorities.
PrimaDeli has decided to close all its retail outlets temporarily. About 50 of its workers are on paid leave.
The company said it is "sorry and saddened" by the outbreak.
It promised to look into the incident and address it accordingly.
That is why it set up the hotline number 6277-7171.
Mr Cheng added that his company has been awarded the Grade A status for food hygiene, sanitation and processing by the AVA for the past 14 years consecutively.
He stressed that the company is committed to ensuring that this problem can be resolved expeditiously.
The Health Ministry was notified of the first food poisoning case on November 26. But the first of the over 100 people affected had bought the chocolate cakes a week earlier, on November 19.
Despite this incident, the AVA said the number of food poisoning cases in Singapore is low. Still, this is a serious matter and so it is doing everything to make sure that this does not happen again. - CNA/ms |

Heavy showers mark start of rainy season in Singapore

SINGAPORE : It was a wet day on Wednesday, with the rain starting at around noon and graduating into a heavy downpour over many areas by 2pm.
The showers continued till about 7pm.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) said this is the start of the rainy season in Singapore, which usually lasts from December to January.
The eastern and northeastern parts of the island received the highest rainfall, with 131.2 mm and 123. 44 mm of rainfall being recorded respectively at Changi Airport and Seletar between 8am and 6pm.
The average monthly rainfall for December is 287.9 mm.
NEA added that the rain is brought in by the Northeast Monsoon.
This is characterised by afternoon and late evening showers which are heavy at times.
There could also be a few periods of prolonged monsoon rain.
This is a result of a steady strengthening of winds over the South China Sea, known as a monsoon surge.
Windy conditions - which Singapore has been experiencing over the past several days - are also common.
The public can expect intermittent rain on Thursday; afternoon showers are also likely on Friday.
The PUB said no flash floods were reported on Wednesday, but it has sent out a warning that this may happen in low-lying areas.
Some trees were uprooted as a result of the downpour.
NEA said that it will issue warnings when heavy rain or prolonged monsoon rain is expected.

Malay teacher wins Golden Point award

You could call it a successful attempt at mining life for art - and prizes.
A short story and six poems based on her teaching experience made Malay teacher Norlila Abdul Gani the star of the Golden Point Award ceremony on Wednesday night.
Presented by sponsor Singapore Press Holdings and the Singapore Press Holdings Foundation, the literary award ceremony was held at Chamber, The Arts House.
Ms Norlila, 30, a first-time writer, walked away with the top prizes in the poetry and short story categories in Malay.
She wrote a short story, My Teacher, about her class in Millenia Institute and their attitude problems, and a series of poems on her mixed feelings and hopes for her students.
This is the first time that the biennial competition, started in 1992, is restricted to unpublished writers.
It is also the only national creative writing competition in four languages.
Said Ms Noorlina: 'I only entered the competition at the urging of my husband. All the works are inspired by my career.'
First prize winners in each of the four language categories, in both prose and poetry, received $4,000 in cash and a $6,000 enrichment grant.
One of them will get the winning work adapted into a short film.
Mr Edmund Cheng, chairman of the National Arts Council, announced at the awards presentation on Wednesday night that The Arts House is investing $15,000 to adapt one of the top four prize-winning short stories this year into a short film.
On this print-to-screen decision, guest-of-honour and Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Tarmugi, said: 'It is a remarkable and obvious example of how literary work is the vital fuel that stokes the furnace that is the creative industry.'
This year, some 769 entries poured in from Singapore citizens and permanent residents from all walks of life - including engineers, accountants, social workers and fitness instructors.
This is up from the 653 entries in 2005.
Entries also came from a range of ages.
The oldest winner was retired accountant Poon Heng Wah,68, who penned a classical poem with a creative interpretation of Chinese legends.
He won the top prize in the Chinese poetry section.
On his seniority, he said with a laugh: 'In China and Taiwan, poets are writing until they are in their 80s. I'm very young compared to them.'
The youngest first prize winner was Ma Huaqi, 25, a Literature student at the University of Queensland in Australia.
He took home the top prize in English poetry for his suite of six poems on various themes, including meditating on the Nicoll Highway collapse.
He hoped 'to meet other people interested in the arts and in writing at the ceremony.'
'Hopefully we can exchange ideas with each other, especially with those who write in other languages.' |

SYARIKAT pembuat kek, Prima Food Pte Ltd, akan menyemak semua tuntutan dan membayar wang pampasan kepada pelanggan jika terbukti wabak keracunan makanan yang dilaporkan baru-baru ini disebabkan oleh kek coklat buatannya.
Kedai milik syarikat tersebut, Prima Deli, yang menjual kek tersebut, dalam suratnya kepada media semalam juga telah meminta maaf atas insiden itu.
Bahkan, syarikat itu telah menyediakan satu talian segera 6277-7171 bagi melayani pelanggan yang terjejas.
Lebih 40 orang yang terjejas selepas memakan kek coklat itu telah menelefon talian tersebut semalam.
'Setakat ini, kami telah menerima sebahagian mereka yang terjejas yang membuat tuntutan, tetapi jumlah masih sedikit.
'Kami akan mengambil semua butir yang diperlukan dan merujuk kes itu kepada pihak insurans,' kata Cik Pansy Wong, timbalan pengurus syarikat tersebut.
Menurutnya, jumlah pampasan masih belum ditetapkan kerana ia bergantung pada tempoh sakit dan apa yang dimakan. Ia juga bergantung pada dapatan siasatan.
Seramai 106 orang keracunan makanan selepas dikatakan memakan kek coklat yang dibeli di Prima Deli, termasuk bayi berusia 11 bulan, Muhd Ikhwan Faqif Mohd Sani.
Bayi itu antara 23 anggota keluarganya yang cirit-birit selepas memakan kek coklat dalam satu majlis ulang tahun 25 November lalu.
Prima Food baru sahaja mendapat sijil halal Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (Muis) Mei lalu.
Kementerian Kesihatan (MOH) pertama kali menerima laporan keracunan itu pada 23 November lalu.
Kesemua 39 cawangan kedai Prima Deli di sini dijangka ditutup hingga Selasa depan.
Kelmarin, kilang Prima Food diarahkan ditutup.
AVA pula akan terus membuat pemeriksaan di kilang dan syarikat itu akan hanya dibenarkan beroperasi menghasilkan makanan apabila ia selamat untuk beroperasi. |

PrimaDeli hazelnut paste, chocolate cream test positive for bacteria

SINGAPORE : The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) said another semi-processed product found at the now-closed Prima Food factory has tested positive for a bacteria that causes food poisoning.
The AVA said the chocolate cream tested positive for Salmonella Enteritidis. Initial testing of food samples taken from the factory had shown that the hazelnut paste also tested positive.
Salmonella is a group of bacteria that can cause symptoms such as fever, diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
AVA is still investigating the source of contamination. The factory remains closed following the food poisoning outbreak that affected over 100 people who had eaten chocolate cakes from PrimaDeli.
In a statement, PrimaDeli said the two staff members who had tested positive for Salmonella are receiving appropriate medical treatment.
In another development, PrimaDeli has promised to compensate its customers who had food poisoning. It said it will also compensate its franchisees that are affected by the temporary closure of its retail outlets. However, details of the compensation have yet to be worked out.
At least 40 PrimaDeli retail outlets islandwide are undergoing a major cleanup.
Jordon Cheang, who manages three PrimaDeli outlets in Ang Mo Kio, Jurong West and Lau Pa Sat, estimates that he will suffer a loss of some S$30,000 over six days of closure.
"PrimaDeli has explained to us what happened and the corrective measures that they are going to undertake. They are working very closely with the MOH (Ministry of Health) and AVA to investigate what caused the bacteria and how to improve the corrective measures," said Cheang.
"If we're still not able to resume business by next week, ... PrimaDeli's management has assured us that they will provide adequate compensation. But the current priority is to work with the AVA and MOH to make sure that they can address this hygiene issue and to resume production as soon as possible," he added.
In a written reply to Channel NewsAsia's queries, PrimaDeli said its factory should be thoroughly disinfected by early next week.
It added that this is just one of the processes, and the company is still working closely with the authorities to make sure that all its production procedures are in good shape before it can get the green light to operate again. - CNA /ls |

Most of passengers of delayed Tiger Airways flight finally leave for Krabi

SINGAPORE: Most of the passengers from a delayed Tiger Airways flight have finally left for their destination - the Thai resort town of Krabi.
Channel NewsAsia understands that about 80 percent of the passengers from Friday's flight left for Krabi on Saturday morning.
About 200 passengers who were scheduled to be on board the Tiger Airways flight TR 188 for the 8.15pm flight were made to wait for their delayed flight with apparently no updates from the airline.
TR 188 was eventually cancelled and the passengers were checked into M Hotel. But many were unhappy with the turn of events.
Callers to the MediaCorp News hotline said their flight had been initially scheduled to take off at 8.15pm on Friday. But the plane only left at about 9.50pm.
Less than an hour into the flight, the plane was turned back to Singapore.
The passengers said the captain had made an announcement saying that it was due to a problem with the air conditioning.
One stewardess apparently told a group on board that there was not enough oxygen.
One passenger said it was so hot and humid in the plane that one of them had difficulty breathing.
When passengers arrived back in Singapore, many were unhappy that there was no representative from the airline to explain what had happened.
One airport official was said to have told the passengers that the plane would take off again at 12.30am. This was stated in copies of a letter which were left on a table.
The passengers claimed that these copies were not distributed.
Subsequently, another letter stated that the flight had been postponed to 11am on Saturday because of crew rotation.
By 2.30am, the passengers collected their bags and many made their way to M Hotel.
A passenger said: ".....the whole point is that it's not a delay, it's effectively a flight cancellation."
"They just said that they will refund the airfare, which is not a lot because most of us only paid $1.99 for the airfare. They are going to refund only $4," said another passenger. - CNA/ir/so

Neighbours helping to blow the whistle on maid abusers

HELPING maids plan escape routes out of abusive employers' homes is part of Ms Elizabeth Tan's job.
For maids working under hawk-eyed employers, the best times to make a run are when they are taking out the trash or sent to buy food.
Most times, Ms Tan is discreet with her help but she has even brazenly waited at a void deck to escort an abused maid to safety.
The chairman of the Archdiocesan Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (ACMI), Ms Tan also mans the organisation's 24-hour helpline.
This year, 24 callers have dialled the ACMI number, complaining of maid abusers.
While nine of these calls came from suffering maids, the 15 other calls were from strangers or neighbours and friends of the abused maids.
At the helpline of Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2), an advocacy group for migrant workers, four in 10 of the calls are from members of the public.
Some whistle-blowers even send pictures to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and to Stomp, the interactive portal of The Straits Times, to report abusers.
Last month, one employer was fined $4,000 after a picture of his maid perched precariously on a 10th-storey ledge, watering plants, was sent to the MOM.
'The public does play an important role and they're really starting to make the effort to be whistle-blowers,' said Ms Tan.
But some go further than just tip the authorities off.
When Ms C. Chia, 43, saw her neighbour's maid sleeping in the car porch, the marketing consultant sensed something was amiss.
The scrawny maid would also ask Ms Chia for food, claiming her employer fed her only once a day. The last straw was when she passed a suicide note to another neighbour's maid.
After seeking advice from the ACMI, Ms Chia and a neighbour got the abused maid to climb over the house fence and drove her to the police station.
'I didn't want to sour the relationship with my neighbour but I couldn't let the abuse go on,' said Ms Chia.
Running away, however, is not the first advice agencies give to callers on the helplines.
When maids call in, often speaking in trembling voices and whispered tones, agencies would first establish what their complaints are.
The bulk of the gripes are to do with insufficient food, unpaid salaries, physical and verbal abuse and being overworked.
The maids are usually advised to first voice their grievances to their employers. But many are so timid, they often do not and some even clam up and deny reports after the MOM or police have been called in.

Muis: Sejajar peraturan Saudi bagi wanita bawah 45 tahun

JEMAAH wanita berusia bawah 45 tahun yang ingin menunaikan ibadat haji akan hanya dibenarkan mendaftarkan diri jika mereka ditemani mahram masing-masing.
Ini sesuai dengan peraturan pihak berkuasa haji Arab Saudi yang tidak membenarkan jemaah wanita berusia di bawah 45 tahun mengerjakan haji melainkan ditemani mahram.
Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (Muis) menyatakan demikian dalam satu kenyataan semalam.
Isu berkenaan diulas Menteri Bertanggungjawab Bagi Ehwal Masyarakat Islam, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, ketika ditemui dalam majlis keberangkatan rombongan jemaah haji setempat di Lapangan Terbang Changi semalam.
Beliau memberitahu media bahawa Muis sudah berusaha mendapatkan kelonggaran bagi jemaah tanpa mahram tetapi tidak mendapat izin pihak berkuasa Saudi.
'Justeru, Muis mengambil langkah-langkah memberitahu semua ejen penjualan pakej haji (GSA) mengenai peraturan tersebut,' tambahnya.
Mahram adalah pasangan lelaki bagi wanita yang sudah bernikah atau saudara lelaki terdekat bermula dengan bapa bagi mereka yang masih bujang.
Dr Yaacob, yang juga Menteri Sekitaran dan Sumber Air, berkata Muis telah berusaha memberikan alasan untuk mendapatkan kelonggaran bagi jemaah serupa itu.
Antaranya, wanita tidak berumah tangga menjadi satu trend baru dan jaminan keselamatan mereka terjaga dengan sistem haji yang baik tetapi ia masih tidak dapat diterima pihak berkuasa Saudi.
'Ini bukan hanya untuk jemaah Singapura tetapi jemaah seluruh dunia bagi memastikan keselamatan mereka yang berusia bawah 45 tahun dan dijaga dengan baik,' ujar beliau lagi.
Tahun lalu, Muis cuba mendapatkan kelonggaran bagi 70 jemaah wanita Singapura berbanding 56 jemaah wanita tahun ini.
Namun bagi tahun ini, lima daripada 56 jemaah wanita yang gagal mendapatkan kelonggaran, berjaya memujuk mahram masing-masing menemani mereka.
'Memandangkan pihak berkuasa haji Arab Saudi tidak memberi pengecualian sejak dua tahun berturut- turut dan dasar itu akan terus dikekalkan, Muis membuat keputusan bahawa wanita di bawah usia 45 tahun hanya dibenarkan mendaftar untuk menunaikan haji jika mereka ditemani mahram,' jelas Muis.
Seramai 106 jemaah haji berangkat ke tanah suci Makkah semalam bersama Ketua Misi Haji, Ustaz Pasuni Maulan.

TV DI TAPAK TANGAN
Peniaga ambil kesempatan jual telefon TV sebab peraturan belum diputus

TELEFON bimbit yang diserta fungsi televisyen atau telefon TV kini rancak dipasarkan di sini sesuai dengan permintaan yang terus meningkat daripada orang ramai.
Para peniaga didapati mengambil kesempatan mengedarkan set berkenaan kerana peraturan mewajibkan pemilik atau pengendalinya mengambil lesen berasingan belum diputuskan pihak berkuasa setempat.
Bagaimanapun, penjualan telefon sedemikian kini dijalankan 'di bawah kaunter' - tidak secara terbuka seperti ketika ia mula dibawa masuk ke sini sekitar tiga bulan lalu.
Ini kerana telefon TV berkenaan dibawa masuk ke sini untuk tujuan dieksport - bukan pasaran tempatan.
Beberapa peniaga kaki lima dan kakitangan kedai-kedai telefon di Geylang, City Plaza dan Sim Lim Tower menyatakan sambutan orang ramai sangat menggalakkan.
Antara jenama popular ialah Red Star, Mobile TV, Chenghai dan Handango - kesemuanya buatan China.
Harganya antara $300 dengan $380 sebuah.
Selain boleh menonton kesemua rancangan televisyen setempat, Malaysia dan Indonesia, telefon TV juga mempunyai fungsi kamera, MP3, MP4, bluetooth, video, pemain audio, radio dan PDA.
Tidak seperti telefon bimbit biasa yang mempunyai waranti antara setahun dengan dua tahun, telefon TV berkenaan hanya diberikan waranti antara sebulan dengan tiga bulan.
Namun, jika rosak, pembeli boleh menghantar semula kepada kedai yang menjualnya untuk dibaiki.
Seorang peniaga di Geylang yang hanya mahu dikenali sebagai Encik Ram, 30-an tahun, berkata: 'Saya sekarang dah kehabisan stok. Baru seminggu saya jual, orang tengok terus beli.
'Macam mana mereka tak tertarik kerana telefon bimbit ini serba-serbi ada... boleh telefon, petik gambar, main video, MP3, MP4 dan paling best boleh tonton televisyen,' tambahnya sambil hanya menunjukkan kotak kosong telefon TV berjenama Red Star itu.
Ditanya mengapa pekedai tidak mempamerkan telefon TV yang dijual di atas kaunter, beliau berkata 'mereka tidak pasti peraturan pelesenannya dan ia hanya untuk eksport'.
Menurutnya, siaran televisyen telefon TV dapat dilihat dengan jelas di luar bangunan atau di tempat terbuka.
'Orang beli pasal mereka boleh tengok TV ketika bersantai di luar atau semasa tunggu kawan... dapat isi masa,' tambah Encik Ram.
Seorang peniaga di City Plaza ketika ditanya sama ada beliau ada menjual telefon TV, hanya berkata: 'Lu kalau mahu kita pergi ambil. Kena tunggu sekejap!'
Menurut peniaga berusia lewat 20-an tahun itu, beliau tidak berani jual terang-terangan kerana tidak pasti soal lesen.
'Patut kena ambil lesen macam TV di rumah. Tapi belum dengar telefon TV juga kena ambil lesen!' jelasnya yang menjual jenama jenis Mobile TV dan Handango berharga $380 sebuah.

MDA: MEMANG PERLU LESEN TAPI BELUM WAJIB
TELEFON TV memang perlu lesen - sama seperti televisyen di rumah - namun pemiliknya tidak wajib mengambilnya buat masa ini.
Sebabnya: Penguasa Pembangunan Media (MDA) yang memantau kemajuannya mendapati penggunaan telefon TV masih baru di sini.
MDA menyatakan demikian sebagai menjawab pertanyaan Berita Harian sama ada pemilik telefon TV perlu mempunyai lesen untuk menggunakannya di sini.
'Di bawah Akta Penyiaran (Bab 28), pemilikan atau operasi sebarang peralatan penyiaran atau direka bagi menerima isyarat penyiaran memang perlu mempunyai lesen.
'Ini termasuklah set televisyen, komputer yang boleh mendapat siaran televisyen atau telefon TV.
'MDA masih terus memantau kemajuan telefon TV dan kami mendapati penggunaannya masih di peringkat awal di sini.
'Justeru, MDA tidak akan mewajibkan lesen TV berasingan bagi peralatan tersebut buat masa ini,' kata Pengurus Khidmat Pelanggan dan Pelesenan MDA, Cik Regina Chang, dalam e-melnya Jumaat lalu. |

Singapore plans second cruise ship terminal

SINGAPORE: Work on a second Singapore cruise ship terminal is likely to start next year, the chief of the city-state's tourism board said Monday.
Lim Neo Chian said on local radio that plans call for a second terminal to be built in the Marina South district, where Singapore's first casino complex is expected to open in 2009.
"We're fairly optimistic that we should be OK to start next year," Lim said.
He said some bigger ships have difficulty getting to the current terminal located across from Sentosa island. The facility has two berths for international cruise liners.
Because of increasing demand, the existing facility is also "a little bit congested at times," Lim added.
He did not give a cost for the new facility but said "typical developmental issues" still need to be resolved.
"Once the key issues are settled we will work at double time to get the cruise terminal up as soon as possible," he said.
Singapore has launched a series of projects to boost its tourism appeal. Among them are two casino developments, and a Formula One road race to be held next year. - AFP/ac |

Football: FAS bans Tampines Rovers' Noh Alam Shah for 12 months

SINGAPORE : The FAS Disciplinary Committee has banned Noh Alam Shah for 12 months from playing in all FAS-sanctioned matches and tournaments.
A S$2,000 fine was also slapped on the 27-year-old striker.
The Tampines Rovers player acted violently towards SAF FC's Daniel Bennett when their teams met in the finals of the RHB Singapore Cup on November 25th.
In the 93rd minute of that match, Alam Shah tackled Bennett, and used his knee to hit the defender's face followed by a kick to his body.
The Tampines striker was also aggressive towards match referee Abas Daud and FAS photographer Aundry Gan.
Alam Shah accepted the charges and his ban will take immediate effect while the fine is payable within 14 days. - CNA/ch |

WANITA DIPUKUL DALAM KES ROMPAK
SEORANG wanita bukan sahaja hilang beg tangannya, malah mukanya ditumbuk dalam satu rompakan pagi kelmarin di kaki lima dekat Blok 321C Anchorvale Drive.
Dalam kejadian itu, wanita dalam lingkungan usia pertengahan 20-an tahun itu sedang menggunakan telefon bimbitnya untuk berbual dengan rakannya apabila seorang lelaki menerpa dari belakang dan menumbuk nya sebelum merampas beg mangsa berharga $2,000.
Pencuri itu juga cuba meragut rantai wanita tersebut tetapi gagal kerana mangsa bergelut untuk melepaskan dirinya.
Beg wanita itu antara lain mengandungi dompet berharga $850 dan telefon bimbit bernilai $430.
Polis berkata, lelaki itu kali terakhir dilihat memakai kemeja-T biru tua.
Dalam satu lagi kes kecurian, sebuah pejabat di Boon Lay Way dipecah masuk.
Dalam kes itu, seorang pekerja wanita mengunci pintu pejabat tersebut sebelum meninggalkannya sekitar 1.30 pagi kelmarin.
Selepas beliau pulang sekitar 3.30 petang pada hari yang sama, beliau mendapati pejabatnya telah dimasuki pencuri.
Majikannya kemudian mendapati sebuah mesin kod garis berharga $1,000 dan wang tunai sebanyak $7,100 lesap. |

DUA WANITA JADI MANGSA KEJADIAN RAMPAS LARI
DUA wanita menjadi mangsa kes rampas lari dalam kejadian berasingan Jumaat lalu.
Dalam kes pertama, seorang wanita berusia 50-an tahun sedang berjalan ke arah sebuah perhentian bas dekat Blok 538 Jelapang Road sekitar 6 pagi apabila seorang lelaki mengekori beliau dari belakang dan merampas beg tangannya.
Menurut polis, mangsa kehilangan wang tunai $400 dan barangan peribadi yang disimpan di dalam beg tersebut.
Lelaki tersebut dikatakan berkulit sawo matang, dipercayai remaja, berambut pendek yang dicelup warna emas dan memakai baju berwarna putih dan seluar bermuda.
Pada hari yang sama, seorang lagi wanita, berusia lewat 60-an tahun, menjadi mangsa kes rampas lari.
Menurut polis, wanita itu berada di paras dua besmen Plaza Singapura apabila seorang lelaki merampas beg tangannya.
Beg itu mengandungi wang tunai $20, telefon bimbit bernilai $260 dan barangan peribadi.

MUFTI Syed Isa Semait mengisytiharkan Hari Raya Aidiladha 1428 Hijrah jatuh pada Khamis, 20 Disember.
Mufti berkata mengikut kiraan hisab falak, anak bulan tidak ada di ufuk Singapura setelah terbenam matahari petang kelmarin kerana terbenam lebih awal.
Oleh itu, semalam hari pencukup Zulkaedah, manakala awal Zulhijah jatuh pada hari ini.
'Ini bererti Hari Raya Haji 10 Zulhijah 1428 Hijrah jatuh pada hari Khamis, 20 Disember 2007,' kata Mufti. |

Woman loses $55 000 to phone scam

A WOMAN transferred $55,000 to two bank accounts to settle a money laundering case which she was alleged to have been involved in.
Police said the woman, who is in her late 30s, was at home in Choa Chu Kang Street 64 on Dec 4 when she received a call from a woman who claimed to be an officer from the Subordinate Court.
The caller accused her of being involved in a money laundering case and told her to appear in court unless she transferred money to two bank accounts.
The con woman said she would visit the victim at home on Dec 7 with documents to settle her case after the money had been paid up.
The victim made the transfers totalling $55,000 on Dec 6, but the trickster did not turn up the next day. |
