Box office analysis
Exclusive By Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, April 26, 2007]
First weekend performance of latest release
'Kya Pakaau Story Hai', 'Kya Bore Story Hai', 'Kya Flop Story Hai'.....headlines all over were unanimous in screaming aloud that KYA LOVE STORY HAI was easily one of the most forgettable films to have released this year. There have been bad movies and there will be bad movies, but when availability of good resources, a willing producer, a chartbuster track and some good locations also doesn't help a story move forward, the writing is clear on the wall that it is not just the execution but the basic foundation that is at flaw.
Same was the case with Lovely Singh's KLSH since there was a shocking lack of depth in the film's script. All of this meant that the film didn't have anything to gain once the Friday shows were over. The film was never expected to take anything more than an ordinary start and rest was dependant on word of mouth. In case of KLSH the word of mouth was so bad after the first show commenced that it was only downhill from thereon. The film would add on to the long list of box office disappointments in 2007.
The other three releases of the week - MY BOLLYWOOD BRIDE, PAPPU PAAS HO GAYA and PANGAA NA LO - arrived on a handful of prints and are on verge of disappearing in a week抯 time. With zero buzz, miniscule publicity and lack of star cast to add to the woes, the films are plain non-starters.
Last week's movies
Considering the fact that BIG BROTHER only had single screens as its chief source for making money, a 5 crore opening does seem to be handful. Having said that, it is still not the kind of total that is flattering to say the least. Agreed that a delayed product comes with its own limitations and Sunny Deol is at an all time low of his career, but still this film at maximum can qualify as face saving. Nevertheless, Guddu Dhanoa would be relieved that his film has finally arrived and accepted at least at centers in North India.
Though Mumbai was never expected to reap in good harvest for the film and folded first week at mere 55 lakhs, Delhi was an out and out disappointment with the total reading a mere 17 lakhs. Unbelievable, since this is an area where the worst of Sunny films have traditionally done decent. With a response like this, it was left to smaller cities and interiors to collectively contribute in bringing 4 crores.
LIFE MEIN KABHIE KABHIEE, in spite of being one of the better films of Vikram Bhatt, ironically stands as one of his biggest box office disasters today. The film got a selective release [just 100 cinemas] and its total only managed to come within breathing distance of a lowly 50 lakhs. Even his RED had fared better when compared to LMKK but Vikram Bhatt's cup of woes only seems to filling on further with every passing year.
While Aftab's string of flops continues in spite of good performances, Dino Morea is on a shaky ground as well. Meanwhile Sameer Dattani would have to wait for another day to see any of his films run beyond two weeks at the theaters, let aside CORPORATE where he had exactly 3 scenes.
In the meantime an absolute outsider called BHEJA FRY had its fries and ate them too as the film debuted in Top-3 charts and crossed 2 crore mark. For a 55 lakhs film, this kind of total gives it a HIT status right away. Add to it the good DVD sales that are expected once the software arrives on stands and it would only mean continued celebrations for everyone involved.
Vinay Pathak was a known face for last 4-5 years. Now he is also a known name post BHEJA FRY at least in the cities. The film's collections read a mind blowing 80 lakhs in Mumbai, whereas Delhi plus NCR got another 55 lakhs. Now it has to be seen how far does the film travel from here since the word of mouth is positive and audience has started becoming further aware of the film in its second week. If the fall sustains itself at 50% industry standard, it would be yet another feather in the cap for the film.
From the past
With the second week proving to be mighty disastrous for SHAKALAKA BOOM BOOM, the dreams of even being considered as coverage are shattered. The film took an extremely heavy fall by 80% + which clearly spells a FLOP box office status for the film.
With just 1 crore more coming in and the total reading 7.5 crores, this is yet another box office failure for Bobby Deol. Meanwhile Upen Patel sees a commercial disappointment for the first time in his short career as both 36 CHINA TOWN and NAMASTE LONDON have been successful. Ditto for Kangana who had a dream start to her career with GANGSTER and WOH LAMHE. Celina has second consecutive box office failure after RED.
PROVOKED didn't quite have a flattering opening weekend and writing was clear on the wall as soon as the first week commenced. There were never any hopes of a revival in the second week and in spite of minimal competition, the film managed to collect only 50 lakhs more to bring its total to 1.75 crores. Expected to fold up once the total crosses 2 crore mark, PROVOKED is second consecutive English language film failure for Aishwarya Rai after MISTRESS OF SPICES.
NAMASTEY LONDON continues to gain from positive word of mouth and has been making hay due to all films releasing after it [with an exception of BHEJA FRY] turning out to be box office disappointments. The film dropped by only 30% and brought home another 3.5 crore. Sitting pretty at 34 crores and still counting, the film may eventually loose its breath before it comes near 40 crores mark. That still should be an achievement since after a 16 crore opening week, even 35 crore seemed like a stretch.
In Mumbai, the collections saw a reasonable slide from 85 lakhs to 50 lakhs but in Delhi the film has held on quite amazingly since after a 50 lakhs 3rd week, the film saw approximately 40 lakhs coming in the 4th week.
For the first time since its release, THE NAMESAKE saw a substantial drop as it fell by over 40%. Still bringing in another 50 lakhs and crossing the 4 crore mark, the film is a semi-HIT. Success of a film like THE NAMESAKE should open up the eyes of commercial film makers in Bollywood who have been making Irrfan Khan enact particular kind of roles. Sheer depth that he has managed to bring to his character in the film brings Irrfan Khan into spotlight once again.
On sheer strength of single screen audience, VIVAH has achieved the feat of crossing 32 crores in a matter of 23 weeks. Taking a slow and steady approach, the film is still running at 50 cinemas and is now all geared up to enter its silver jubilee week.
In the future
Yash Chopra. Aditya Chopra. Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherjee. Vishal-Shekhar. Javed Akhtar. Siddharth Anand. 15+ shows at prominent multiplexes. Feel good family entertainer. Solo notable release of the week. Good buzz. All of this ensures that the film would take a good opening at the box office. Still, do not expect a phenomenal opening which would break the record created by DHOOM 2 or come close to the ones created by KANK, KRRISH or DON. At maximum, it would open on the lines of a FANAA or a LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI but that should be good enough to make it sail through. |

Akshaye Khanna's GANDHI-MY FATHER in August
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, April 27, 2007]
Anil Kapoor's home production GANDHI - MY FATHER is now gearing up for release and is expected to arrive in August
Starring Akshaye Khanna as a prime protagonist, GANDHI - MY FATHER has been ready for quite some time now but Anil Kapoor had been waiting for the right release timing for his film. Said to be a brilliant piece of cinema by insiders who have managed to take a sneak peek into the film, GANDHI - MY FATHER is a sensitive film that is expected to be appreciated by connoisseurs of good cinema.
Incidentally in recent past, there have been at least two notable films which were released with Gandhi having a strong presence in the film's plot. While 2005 saw Anupam Kher's MAINE GANDHI KO NAHI MAARA releasing, 2006 had a landmark film that went by the name of LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI.
While the subject of GANDHI - MY FATHER is diametrically opposite to either of the two films, a lot is expected from it due to reports of some brilliant performances and very good direction that has gone into making this film. |

Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, April 27, 2007]
After DHOOM 2, Yash Raj Films are looking at a huge worldwide release yet again with TA RA RUM PUM.
Confirming the developments, director Siddharth Anand said, "Yes, we are indeed coming big today. Approximately 800 prints are being floated worldwide looking at the film being so hot in the distribution circles. Since we are confident about our product and truly believe that the film would click quite well with the audience, we had no second thoughts about flooding the market with such a large number of prints."
While there is a great demand for the film in overseas as well, it is expected that out of 800, 500 odd prints would be circulated for the India market. Expect your neighborhood multiplex to bring in TRRP at 12/15/18 shows a day! |

Mithoon and Sayeed Quadri team up again for AGAR
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, April 27, 2007]
Hit composer-lyricist 'jodi' of Mithoon and Sayeed Quadri, who have just delivered a chartbuster soundtrack of THE TRAIN, have been teamed up again for AGAR.
After THE TRAIN, this is only the second time in his short career so far where Mithoon has been roped in as a composer for an entire film. In spite of all the adulation coming his way, Mithoon is cool as ever and says without getting overtly excited, "I hear that THE TRAIN is getting a good response and doing well at the charts. This is all by the grace of God and I hope that I continue to deliver good work."
Good work is certainly expected from him with his next venture AGAR. How are things progressing on that front? "I have recently started doing work for AGAR which is yet another production of Narendra and Shyam Bajaj [producers of THE TRAIN, AKSAR]. It is a commitment with them and I am happy to be teaming up with Quadri bhai again. He is not just a brilliant lyricist who knows how to get just the right expressions for a situation; he is also a great human being." |

When Rajat asked 'Bheja Fry' heroine not to cheat
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, April 28, 2007]
After seeing her perform the resounding slap to Rajat Kapoor in Sanjay Bellary's rip-roaring comedy 'Bheja Fry', people seem to be wary of actress Bhairavi Goswami's solid hand.
But we got to know, it was actually not her fault.
While enacting the scene, Rajat, known for his professionalism and perfectionism, insisted Bhairavi should not cheat the camera and go ahead with the tight slap required for the scene.
What he didn't realize was that it would take many rehearsals and four "painful takes" before the director would say 'OK'. Tch Tch! |

Sorry, no more 'Big Brother' - Shilpa Shetty
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, April 28, 2007]
After winning the world's leading reality show 'Celebrity Big Brother' in UK, the media has been abuzz with reports of Shilpa Shetty being a part of the 'Big Brother' house in Australia. But the actress' spokesperson and publicist Dale Bhagwagar states otherwise.
"She won't be a part of another reality show," he says and adds, "Shilpa participated in the UK 'Big Brother' as she wanted to do something new in her career and take one step ahead in life. It threw challenges untold and she emerged a stronger and more confident person. Since then, she has moved on in life," he said.
On being asked about the rumors that Shilpa could be a part of a show as a guest to promote her forthcoming film, Metro, her publicist declined it right away.
Currently, the actress is looking forward to her upcoming film 'Metro' with heartthrob Shiney Ahuja and powerhouse performer Kay Kay Menon. The film is going to get a grand international release in a fortnight.
Around the same time, Shilpa will also launch a perfume in her name, mainly targeted at the UK market. |

Kiss issue blown due to gossip-hungry television media
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, April 28, 2007]
Reacting to the apology rendered by actor Richard Gere to the media following the outcry over pecks he planted on Shilpa Shetty's cheeks, the actress's spokesperson Dale Bhagwagar commented, "It is sad that Gere had to apologize for no fault of his".
"All he had done was enacted a scene from his film 'Shall We Dance' to entertain the truckers at the AIDS awareness event. It was a natural cute and loving impromptu gesture by Gere which was blown out of proportion due to improper projection by the gossip-hungry television media," Bhagwagar said.
He maintained that it was an irrelevant controversy and said that Shilpa was neither hurt nor humiliated by Gere's gesture. "It is really surprising that three pecks on Shilpa Shetty's cheeks can cause such an uproar especially in the land of Kamasutra ," he added. |

THE TRAIN now brings sequels to promos
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, April 28, 2007]
THE TRAIN may have moved its release to June but the promotion has enough ammunition in it to keep it engaged for weeks to follow.
The first step in its direction is to now come out with short talkie promos since the songs are anyways doing quite well for themselves ever since they were aired first around 3 weeks back. So what's so special it this, one may ask?
Well, the fact is that director duo of Hasnain Hyderabadwaala have cut a series of promos that would actually act as sequels in a particular order. So while the first talkie promo is currently on air and seemingly ends on a slightly abrupt note with Emraan Hashmi getting a mysterious call, the second one to follow soon would be taking on from where the first one left.
Similarily the third promo which would arrive after a while would be taking the story forward from the first and second promo and keep the audience guessing.
Says Raksha Mistry, "We wanted the promotion to look different considering the fact that entertainment channels this season are flooded with promos of number of films arriving one after another. If we would have arrived in a typical manner, the impact wouldn't have been as massive as we are expecting over next few weeks. It always helps to keep audience looking forward to what next in store rather than opening your cards in the very first go. Just continue seeing what more we have to offer and you would surely be able to understand the connection!' |

EXCLUSIVE - SOAL, a shocking, hypnotic look at a real-life disaster
IndiaGlitz [Monday, April 30, 2007]
From director Apoorva Lakhia comes 'Shoot Out At Lokhandwala', a shocking, hypnotic look at a real-life disaster.
On a calm summer day in 1991, in the bustling Lokhandwala Complex, five criminals including Maya [Viveik Oberoi] and Dilip [Tusshar Kapoor] were counting 70 lakhs in flat no. 32 B, when 286 policemen, headed by ACP Khan [Sanjay Dutt], took strategic positions around their building.
A gunfire ensued and the entire nation witnessed the most talked about daylight encounter lasting 6 hours that transformed suburban Mumbai into a virtual war zone.
'Shoot Out At Lokhandwala' is the story of a seasoned cop, Khan, who chased Khalistani extremists, handpicked cops like Inspector Kaviraj Patil [Suneil Shetty] and Constable Javed Shaikh [Arbaaz Khan], and dared to engage trigger-happy gangsters in a residential locality of Mumbai.
Khan's fight went beyond the encounter as he faced inquisition from his own department and legal charges of human rights violations. 'Shoot Out At Lokhandwala' is the story of an upcoming underworld gangster, Maya, and his highly skilled partner, Dilip. The two made extortion the buzzword in the early 90s and dared to disobey the big bhai of the underworld, drawing the attention of Khan and his newly formed ATS squad.
Both Khan and Maya were men obsessed, so devoted to their professions that their personal lives were a disaster.
'Shoot Out At Lokhandwala' explores the personal obsessions and sacrifices of the two protagonists with absorbing insight, with some of the most riveting action sequences to be ever filmed.
The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Suneil Shetty, Viveik Oberoi, Tusshar Kapoor, Arbaaz Khan, Shabbir Ahluwalia, Aftab Ahmad Khan, Neha Dhupia, Dia Mirza, Rohit Roy, Aarti Chhabria and Rakhi Sawant in key roles and is releasing worldwide on 25th May. |

Sanjay Suri re-launches site; interacts with fans
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, April 30, 2007]
There is good news for all Sanjay Suri fans. Sanjay has re-launched his website and is looking forward to becoming much more accessible with his fans as well as professionals who may wish to get in touch with him.
"There was this site of mine which was created around 3 years back but it always had some areas of improvements", says Sanjay, "I along with my web designer worked on this entire professional feel that we wanted to give to the site."
"The idea was not just to add some pictures and give it a snazzy look and feel", he adds, "In addition the purpose was to have an interactive site where audience could come in, post their comments on what they loved or hated about me or my film, get in touch with me, access information about my past and forthcoming films along with other usual details."
What more is in the offering here? "Navigation was given key importance. So many times it happens that one gets lost in what to see and in the process misses out in accessing some information for his use. This is why it was of utmost importance to make the site so user friendly that a person accessing the website knows in a jiffy what was there in the offering", he explains.
How about current affairs surrounding him? "That is one area that will be regularly monitored; actually on an almost daily basis", he divulges, "So while information about me coming in electronic and print media would be accumulated, in case there are any rumors that are required to be set straight, I would be adding my own comments in the news section."
Apart from fans, any other target set of visitors that he had in mind? "Film makers who want to see my work from the past and get in touch with me for their projects", he says quickly, "In fact you would be surprised to know that makers of some of the recent films that I have locked in approached me though my website itself. It is a great medium and though in West it is being used in an extremely professional manner, in India it is catching up well too!" |

Detractors amuse Shiney!
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, April 30, 2007]
From quite sometime a particular newspaper has almost been stuck with gossip about Shiney Ahuja, as if a bee to honey. But the actor seems least perturbed. "Well, I try to concentrate on my work, but I don't think people seem to like that," he laughs and adds, "I don't subscribe to all papers but they want to continue writing and keep creating stories about me."
At times, Shiney finds such gossipy stories about himself quite amusing. "I get up in the morning and sometimes my publicist Dale (Bhagwagar) calls me up and informs a publication has written this about you. I ask him, 'how's the photograph' and he mostly says it's nice. Then I just chill."
Luckily for Shiney, negative write-ups on him haven't deterred any maker from approaching the actor. He's got three big releases ( Anurag Basu's 'Metro' opposite Shilpa Shetty, Sudhir Mishra's 'Khoya Khoya Chand' opposite Soha Ali Khan and Priyadarshan's 'Bhool Bhulaiya' opposite Vidya Balan) lined up for release in the coming months.
After these, he'll be seen in an untitled film on bike racing (hey, do we see tough competition for John Abraham?). Last but not the least; Shiney is paired opposite Priety Zinta in nine-time National Award winner Jahnu Barua's 'Har Pall'. Way to go! |
