Box office analysis
Exclusive By Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, May 03, 2007]
First weekend performance of latest release
Trade is agog with speculations/doubts/surprises about the box office outcome of TA RA RUM PUM. I am not. After all was it really reasonable to expect a mind boggling/stunning/phenomenal opening for the film? In fact I can distinctly recollect writing in this very column last week that 'don't expect a phenomenal start' for the film. It was also mentioned that the film would see a good opening but not the kind that qualifies as record breaking.
And by the way, good opening the film did take, though if one wishes to associate 'good' as a 80% plus opening for every Yash Raj film then that is living in a dream world. Let's admit it, the film wasn't a DHOOM 2 in the offering which would create hysteria of any sorts. It's mainly a matter of setting standards for the film to foresee how much would the film eventually gain. Obviously if you expect a moon from a film, your expectations are bound to see a crash to the ground.
As of now, TRRP has taken a good start in 60-70% range and looking at a very large number of prints in circulations (expected to be 500 odd), it is certainly not bad. The question now is whether the film is sustaining itself well too. Both the word of mouth and reviews have been decent to impressive and no one is walking out of the theater with a complain. Don't expect a trendsetter or a something which is out of this world and TRRP proves to be a decent dekko for a family outing!
Last week's movies
KYA LOVE STORY HAI was the sole notable film a week before but that didn't quite add on to the film's box office fortune. A poor show from Show 1, the film saw a big slide as the days progressed from Friday to Thursday. Week 1 showing 3 crores in collections means that the film is a certain flop with no signs of redemption in weeks to come. It's target territory, Mumbai, just didn't have much to cheer about after the week ended at mere 50 lakhs. Delhi was very bad at 25 lakhs while Ahmedabad was third best with 20 lakhs.
One shudders to think what would have been the fate of the film had Kareena not appeared in the number 'It's Rocking'. It was this very song that kept the film in news for around a month and if one removed it from the very beginning of KLSH, the film is as good as over. Though director Lovely Singh has certainly lost a lot of ground with the film, Tusshar Kapoor doesn't have much to worry since he has GOOD BOY BAD BOY and SHOOT OUT AT LOKHANDWALA coming in quick succession. Ditto for Ayesha who has a seemingly certain success with FOOL N FINAL arriving in town.
From the past
A lot was dependent on how Week 2 of BIG BROTHER would perform since that would have decided the overall box office fate of BIG BROTHER. There was a mighty fall of 70% of the film but an additional 1.5 crore bringing the overall total close to 6.5 crore just about managed to get the film to coverage status. Ultimately the film has seen a mixed response across the country and would at maximum qualify as a small success up North mainly on the strength of single screen audience.
This is the maximum that the film seems to have survived as there is practically a big release every week. Credit it to Sunny's loyal fans and some good publicity for it's target audience that the film managed to reach this far at least. Sunny would now certainly be hoping that his FOOL N FINAL coming on June 1 meets with a much better (and respectable) box office success.
When a film's collections start reading in thousands in a territory like Mumbai, it is a clear cut disaster sign even if it is an A, B or Z grade movie. Though LIFE MEIN KABHIE KABHIEE boasted of good credentials, its fate was no better as it crashed completely (~95%) to qualify as the biggest disaster of the year gone by. In fact one fails to remember if there was a bigger crash for a film with notable names this year.
Standing at mere 50 lakhs, the film is now out of theaters and should soon see a DVD release. One hopes that in Home Entertainment mode, the film gets its due since it's box office outcome by no means reflects its merits and for once, one can say that director Vikram Bhatt has been unlucky with his venture!
This brings me to a movie which has indeed turned lucky for everyone associated with it. As per reports, the cast and crew of BHEJA FRY were not paid a penny and this is what restricted its budget to 55 lakhs that mainly constituted of actual production cost. The idea was to have profit sharing as the means of remuneration once the film hits the screens.
Well, there are all the valid reasons for cast and crew to be happy with the agreement since the champagne bottles are already out with the film turning into a monster hit. After a 2 crore opening week, the film saw an increase in collections and registered another 2.25 crore, a phenomenon that has been witnessed only with VIVAH and THE NAMESAKE in the recent past.
At 4.25 crore and still raking in good word of mouth, the film has been a quick hit of 2007 and has all in it to be considered as superhit if yet another week brings in similar collections. While Mumbai stayed on at 80 lakhs figure, Delhi NCR saw an improvement from 55 lakhs to 60 lakhs.
It's time for the original DVDs/VCDs of SHAKALAKA BOOM BOOM to be hitting the stands pronto since the film has all but vanished from the theaters. Seeing another mighty fall (80%), the film has got just 20 lakhs more in its 3rd week and now stands at 7.5 crore with 8 crore looking like a distant dream. Just like LMKK, even SLBB is an unfortunate success since audience just didn't venture into theaters and the rest was taken care by press/media which was unanimous in ignoring it completely.
Apart from BHEJA FRY, the only film to have gained a decent audience response in the week gone by is NAMASTEY LONDON. The film has continued to be good over its last 5 weeks and after a 50% fall, it collected another 1.5 crore +. At 35 crores, the film is a hit and Akshay Kumar can assure himself a continued success since his next BHOOL BHULLAIYA (expected to arrive in August end) looks likes a blockbuster material too!
Meanwhile THE NAMESAKE too saw an industry standard fall of 50% while getting richer by 25 lakhs more. At a little less than 4.5 crore, it is a true crossover success for Mira Nair since the film is holding on extraordinary well in overseas too. Meanwhile India collections ensure that the film is a Semi-Hit and gets highlighted as yet another offbeat film seeing a good success along with BLACK FRIDAY and BHEJA FRY. Meanwhile VIVAH continues to be rock-steady (yes, the word is being over used for VIVAH but then that actually has been the state of the film ever since it released 25 weeks back) and continues to gather 15 lakhs every week as has been the case in last 4-5 weeks.
In the future
Sole Hindi release of the film is long-stuck-in-cans YATRA which is mainly art-house cinema. Directed by Gautam Ghose, the film stars Nana Patekar and Rekha in the lead but doesn't come with any box office pull. With zero promotion to support and an offbeat theme, the film is just a filler for the week as no other Hindi film is daring to release on the same Friday as SPIDEMRAN 3. |

Guess what Upen does at 2'o clock in the night?
IndiaGlitz [Friday, May 04, 2007]
Dharmesh Darshan has signed Upen Patel for his next ambitious project. He has been speaking highly about Upen Patel's screen presence and the immense energy level of the new comer.
Upen always attributes his energy level to his fitness regime. Being a fitness freak Upen even works out at 2 am in the night at the gym at Taj Lands End.
Says Upen, "I have always been a fitness freak. So even if it's late I make it a point to follow a fitness regime. I want to live everyday like there's no tomorrow though I wish had more hours in a day."
Upen Patel's energy is reminiscent of SRK, who puts in quite a lot in a day. Upen is optimistic about his career and wants to give his best. Though some critics have not been too kind to Upen, he has taken it more constructively, and that has even made him more determined to try harder. |

Celina Jaitely threatened
IndiaGlitz [Friday, May 04, 2007]
Celebrities and their fans share a very symbiotic relationship but at times some fans can go to extremes with their obsessions.
Lately Celina Jaitely felt the brunt of a crazy fan. She was bombarded with calls from different numbers. Sometimes he identified himself as a Yoga teacher while at other times he called as her driver.Though Celina ignored the calls and tried to avoid it, the man hounded her. Apparently the caller even abused her for not taking his calls.
In fact the sources add that when last week Celina had gone to Rakesh Shrestha studio for a photo-shoot, the anonymous caller apparently threatened her and told her that he was aware of her every move.
According to her friends, Celina was completely spooked because he knew every personal detail about her which turned the situation really scary. This is when she filed a complaint with the Versova Police Station against the stalker who was harassing her.
The sources add, "Celina seemed very happy with the cooperative attitude of the cops, since due to her single status she was traumatized. It was good to see the cops being very helpful."
When contacted Celina didn't want to comment on the issue. She just said, "I would rather not talk about it. I have spoken to the officer-in-charge."
Her business manager Zahid confirms the incident, "Yes it's true that Celina Jaitely has filed a complaint. The police have been very co-operative and she has full faith in the system." |

SOAL brings to screen Sanjay Dutt v/s Vivek Oberoi
IndiaGlitz [Friday, May 04, 2007]
While the super talented Sanjay Dutt will play the main protagonist A A Khan, the intense and gifted actor Vivek Oberoi will play the antagonist named Maya Dolas in 'Shoot out at Lokhandwala'. The real life drama between the cops and the dreaded don will also have the live footage of the gun battle encounter that rocked the nation many years back.
According to insiders who have seen the rushes, both the actors have brought in a great deal of authenticity and integrity to their respective roles. Even Vivek Oberoi, reminiscent of his 'COMPANY' days, has done extensive research on his character.
He visited number of relevant places and met he people close to him to understand the psychological traits of the dreaded don. He even grew his beard, dressed up like Dolas and went to the minutest details of putting a tattooed cross on his hands to get the character sketch right.
With the release slated for May 25th, it will be a welcome relief from the bubblegum romance being dished out, to the realistic cinema of the battle between the protagonist and the antagonist!! |

Vivek doesn't want to embarrass Ash
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, May 05, 2007]
Bollywood is abuzz on how Vivek is back again in the gangster role while enacting Maya Dolas in SHOOT OUT AT LOKHANDWALA. Insiders who have seen the rushes rave about the realistic portrayal and the integrity & authenticity he has brought to his character.
It has also been lately reported lately that Vivek refused to dance to the song 'Ganpat' from the film that had the name 'Aishwarya' in the lyrics. According to sources he was very dignified and tactfully told the director to give the lyrics which went like 'Bipasha, Mallika, Priyanka ya ho Aishwarya Rai' to some other actor.
Eventually the gangsta influenced song, sung by the irrepressible Mika, had Tusshar mouthing the lines.
According to the reports, though Vivek could have done the lines to get even with Ash, he was dignified enough to let go off the opportunity to embarrass her.
Seems like Vivek Oberoi has left his past behind, and like his 'Company' days is concentrating to bring integrity to his craft in 'Shoot Out at Lokhandwala'.
The film has been in news ever since its first teaser hit the small screen. Expected to arrive on May 25th, the film is a multi starrer that brings together a galaxy of star performers on a single stage. The film also sees Amrita Singh making yet another comeback on the silver screen after 'Kalyug'. In 'Shoot Out at Lokhandwala', she plays Vivek's mother who is fondly called 'Aai'.
Interestingly Amrita's ex-husband Saif Ali Khan had a film to his name just lask week, TA RA RUM PUM, where he himself played a father of two children. Incidentally, his on-screen children were not as old as Vivek and were less than 10 years of age. |

Shilpa's thigh on a plate
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, May 05, 2007]
So lovely and awesome did the latest cover of 'Cine Blitz' magazine shape up that its editorial team made two huge chocolate cakes with Shiney Ahuja and Shilpa Shetty's cover images engraved on them. These were sent as thank you gestures to the actors.
When Shiney received his cake, he promptly called his publicist Dale Bhagwagar and asked him to take a bite. A birdie tells us, the publicist, who takes care of the PR for both Shilpa and Shiney, was quite confused which part of the cake to cut and eat.
Just then Shiney's unit boy came up and helped him out with a plate, cut a piece of the cake and put in it. It turned out to be Shilpa's thigh! It's been 48 hours since then, but we hear, Dale is still reeling in laughter.
Meanwhile the magazine cover itself is making a lot of news. If it is anything to go by, heartthrobs Shilpa Shetty and Shiney Ahuja sure seem to share great chemistry.
While Shiney has done his first bare-chested look, Shilpa has worn an ultra-revealing backless dress for the first time. Their vibe is also apparent from the interviews in the mag. With such comfort levels, one can surely expect fireworks from their performance in Anurag Basu's 'Metro'.
Their spokesperson said, "Shilpa has matured into a versatile actress over the years. But it's only now that people are sitting up and noticing her. As for Shiney, he's been a powerhouse performer right from 'Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi' to 'Gangster' to 'Woh Lamhe'. The combination of these two talents could be quite an interesting watch."
'Metro' is due for release on May 11 with worldwide premieres to add to the glamour. |

"I am a loser in METRO" - Shiney Ahuja
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, May 05, 2007]
After immensely appreciated performances in each of his films released since his debut, Shiney Ahuja is gearing up for his METRO which arrives coming Friday.
In the film he is paired opposite current hot-n-happening Shilpa Shetty who is making headlines for both good and not-so-good reasons.
On asked about his role in a film that yet again boasts of an ensemble cast with multiple stories running in parallel (while being connected to each other), Shiney confirmed the speculations about his role. He mentioned that he plays a loser in the film who is quite soft at heart.
He also added that he was fine with such a portrayal and actually loved being a loser in the film since no one is a superhero in reality. |
