Rio rues 'critical' moment
For Rio Ferdinand, the disappointing defeat to Liverpool had an obvious game-breaking moment.

With15 minutes left and United piling on the pressure at 2-1 down, Nemanja Vidic was shown a straight red for bringing down Steven Gerrard, and Fabio Aurelio curled home the killer third goal from the resultant free-kick.

"It was a nervy start from both teams but we took the lead and started to get a foot in the game," Ferdinand told MUTV. "Even when they were 2-1 up, we started to turn the screw in the second half and Carlos Tevez had a half-chance.

"But the sending-off and third goal came at a really critical time. I thought the referee's decision to send Vida off was debatable as I could have got over there to cover."

Another possible turning point came in the first half, when United were leading through Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty, as Vidic's mistake allowed Fernando Torres to pounce.

But Ferdinand refused to castigate his fellow centre-back, saying: "Vida has been one of our most consistent players this season and everyone is allowed to make a mistake, so we won抰 be getting on his back."

Ferdinand even managed to take a postive from what was a distinctly bad day at the office, adding: "Losing any game is disappointing, losing to your big rivals is even worse and the scoreline compounds that.

"But we have to turn this into a positive. This game will have torn out any sub-conscious complacency there may have been. We got a rude awakening today that if we don抰 go out and work hard as a collective unit then we won抰 get the results.

"We now have time to dust ourselves down and get our minds on the game against Fulham next week. It would have been nice if that game was right round the corner but we have to deal with what抯 in front of us."

Sir Alex was culpable and he must also share the blame.

His selection of Carrick over Fletcher for both games this week is the reason we were so poor especially after Carrick failed to impress against Inter the stage was set for Fletcher. For the umpteenth time sir Alex, Michael Carrick is not a big game player he may have the right temperament in training sessions or have the best technique in the world but he is without doubt a limited player. Let me explain I love United and i try to be as fair to all players, yes Michael Carrick has played quite a few games of late yes may be he was jaded ? But if you can get up for Liverpool at home ??? Carrick is a technically gifted player no doubt but he lacks mobility to recover when he errs. He is lanky but Unlike Viera or the up and coming Diaby. He cannot use those long legs to make a lunge and tackle to save his life let alone United. Also the art of dropping a shoulder i.e the Art of the dribble is non existent in his game. So to dribble his way out trouble will never happen.

To over come a pressing midfield like that of Liverpool whose playbook is similar to that of AC Milan ( do your home work Fergie). The pressing Midfielders Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard or better still Seddorf, Pirlo ,Kaka dont give lanky immobile players like Carrick or the ageing Scholes time on the ball hence the need for a player like Fletcher who despite his inferior technique is slightly more mobile and will at times dribble his way out of trouble like he did on countless occasions at the San Siro two weeks back. The massacre at the San Siro in 2007 has effectively been replayed today (again Fergie do your home work). What both this European coaches (Benitez and Ancelotti) have is a manual on how to beat this United by squeezing them in and not allowing any space to speed Merchants like Ronaldo and Rooney. Just waiting for a frustrated United to make a mistake and punish them.If you recall all our goals at the San Siro came from errors the same thing happened today. Hence the importance of Giggs and Berbatov players whose ability can overcome such hurdles with one twist or drop of the shoulders.

How to overcome the press ??? Over the next few weeks Opponents espin Europe will study this defeat starting with Fulham on Saturday who have a wily old continental honed manager in Roy Hodgson. Fergie had an Idea but failed to execute it well. Anderson started the game in order to avoid the press with his ability to dribble and run with the ballbut his positioning was wrong and also his form has also been wanting. He could have been more effective in right CM augmented by Fletcher on Left Central to make the odd tackle and keep Gerard busy but Anderson was rendered uselsee by Carrick's senseless passing tospace where nobody was always loosing possession needlessly. AlsoAnderson position on the right offers his over depended left foot more time to pick a pass instead of being boxed in as he is when on the left, he is no Ryan Giggs who could have been a more suitable candidate on the left but as we know his legs will not allow.

So without Hargreaves and Giggs exhausted from his earlier exertions United seem a very limited side especially in the middle hence the need for a big man upfront Hence 30 million pound Berbatov to hold up play and allow the speed merchants some time on the opponents Final third. That is all United manged to do well against Inter and there were rewards also with Giggs' positioning and his natural abilty countering most of the short comings we had on Wednesday against Cambiasso and Stankovic. Furthermore this pair are nowhere near as mobile as Mascherano and Gerrard. So against Liverpool without Giggs and Berbatov, Rooney and Ronaldo were quickly out of the game in no time and Tevez was reduced to long shots. So if we meet Liverpool again or any team wanting to press we must be patient and composed so Carrick is definitely not my first choice. Depending on physique if like Liverpool Giggs can start with Fletcher in the Middle if more Physical like Chelsea since the return of Essien  Carrick Fletcher or Giggs Carrick Fletcher in the middle.Giggs as conductor leaving Carrick to what he does best a sitting duck to do all the mopping up .

Also another no no is Giggs and Scholes starting the same game in Europe it never works. Carrick and Scholes also dont look like they canp lay well together anymore so central midfield is still a problem forFergie his scouts were asleep. Palacios could have done the job no need for Tosic and Adem in January if they were never going to play this season . It just goes to show how special players like Keane and Robson were. Next season Gibson, Possebon, Foster must get a run in the team.

There's far too much negative talk on this forum after the Liverpool result, which is perhaps understandable, but it is hardly the end o fthe world. Vidic is getting hung out to dry, Van der Sar is now the world's worst goal keeper, our manager is incapable of picking a winning team.....etc, etc, etc....... After 11 wins in a row, this kind of reaction after one defeat, albeit a crushing one, is not very fair on our players who have been out of this world all season.

Our season is still on track to become our most successful ever, and if you think about our remaining fixtures, it will take a minor miracle for anyone to stop us winning the title.
  • We only need another 24 points to guarantee the title. That means we have to lose another 3 games or draw another 4 from our remaining 10 in order to lose the title, providing the scum from Liverpool and London win all of theirs.
  • With those games against Fulham (a), Villa (h), Sunderland (a),Portsmouth (h), Tottenham (h), Boro (a), Man City (h), Arsenal (h), andHull (a), plus Wigan (a) it is hard to see where those losses/draws will come from.
  • This United team always responds well to defeats, and another run of 5-6 wins in a row will have us on the brink of the title.
With United its always a disaster when we lose a game, but please United fans, lets keep it in perspective and stay positive. :victory:

v Fulham *Pre-match Discussion*

CRAVEN COTTAGE

FULHAM v MANCHESTER UNITED

vs

Preview:
We ended what seemed to be a good week on a low tune, the F.A. Cup quarterfinals against Fulham and at the epi-centre was Inter and Liverpool. After dispatching the former and entered the last eight of the champions League then came what in this season is becoming a 'high noon hell' for us. It all looked so rosy when Ron converted his penalty kick and then we went for the second only to be thwarted by Reina wholaunched a 70 yard pass to Torres, Vida should have kicked it out but failed to do so and in the end it was 1-1. Long ball Liverpool were proving a handful when Reina launched the ball, without any stylish interplay we got hammered by route one stuff- and that is officially the nightmare of the week.

Title still in our hands
The title is still in our hands and a 4 point lead with a game in hand is a very big lead at this stage of the season. We will have to reflect on the Liverpool game and really say it was 3 points dropped because some of our interplay and movement was superb, while the defending of Liverpool's long ball which yielded them their goals was very poor and in truth Fergie will be livid. Vida has a one game ban but we might appeal and that was a harsh decision by the Wiley who gave Liverpool everything and allowed them to kick our ankles.

Flatten Fulham
ManUtd will somehow be a wounded tiger and Roy Hodgson will say: 'Oh! nonot them again!' after being comprehensively beaten by us in the previous two matches. We need to focus on the next game and come back with the three points from London, thank god it is not a high noon kickoff and then go into the international break with some confidence restored and in order to get the job done.

The Great Giggsy
It was a surprise that I didn't see Giggsy from the start at Liverpool as I've said several times on current form he is the most artistic midfielder in the prem. I think that it is vital that he starts the game against Fulham and then followed by the game against Aston Villa. The countdown to the tile has begun and it is time to focus on winning our next games to take full advantage of our position in the prem.m

*** football
I think we along with Arsenal have a philosophy to play this attractive fast and free flowing football. A team like Liverpool will use long balls to try and unhinge teams like Man Utd but our philosophy off ootball makes for great entertainment and it is great to watch. Fergie has got the balance between playing attractive football and winning but sometimes attractive football is always winning football. I think our interplay and movement against Liverpool was alright but that result will make us kick it up a notch and might be the result that we needed.

A week to reflect
I think if we had chosen a game to lose this week then it would have been Liverpool because losing the other two would have been fatal blows and knock us out of the F.A Cup or Champions League respectively. We will take the positives out of the Liverpool game as we passed circles around them at times and us the negative result a motivation and hopefully be prepared to deal with the long balls in the future. Teams might try that against us but we will defend better and the high noon kick offs for some bizarre reason wasn't kind to us this season.

Player to watch:
DIMITAR BERBATOV- Will be looking to score a few goal against Fulham tolay claim as the main striker in this magnificent Man Utd team.

Prediction: AWAY WIN

0 - 4

Man Utd to bounce back in style as the wounded tiger unleashes its beautiful footbal
