Box office analysis
Exclusive By Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, May 10, 2007]

First weekend performance of latest release

YATRA was the sole Hindi release of the week gone by and easily qualifies as the shortest ever 'yatra' for a Nana Patekar film in recent times. There was no one aware about the film in the first place, secondly the treatment was so heavy that even intelligentsia didn't have words to describe the film (pun intended) and thirdly the film saw a sparse release. A core art-house film, YATRA tanked even before the first show commenced and would go down as an utterly forgettable film for both Nana and Rekha.

As expected, there was no surprise to see House full signs all around the country for SPIDERMAN 3. As have been the indications so far, it has taken a fabulous start all over. Combined with the fact that it has been released with over 500 prints and has sustained after a bumper first weekend, SPIDERMAN 3 is all set to be a massive hit. Yet again, it is time for Bollywood to sit up and take notice since PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN is arriving on June 01 which means that Hollywood would have a continued presence in the Indian market for weeks at stretch.

Last week's movies

The first week collections of TA RA RUM PUM are out and the least they have done is eradicated the so-called 'flop' tag for the film. A start of close to 18 crores is not what 'flop' films are made of and even if the film now takes an industry standard fall of 50% with every passing week, it would still end up close to 35 crores.

TRRP has earned maximum moolah from Mumbai (4.25 crore +), while in Delhi too it has done well with 2.5 crore coming in its kitty. In Delhi NCR, the film boasts of another 1 crore while Pune at 1.5 crore + and Ahmedabad being close to 1 crore has ensured that the biggest markets for TRRP haven't disappointed.

Having said that, it also has to be monitored closely that how much has SPIDERMAN 3 proved to be a dent in its business, at least in the second week, since the euphoria for this Hollywood offering has been phenomenal. Surprisingly, there hasn't been much exercise done by Yash Raj Films to pep up the proceedings and create further hype about the film so that it can withstand competition from SPIDERMAN 3 and later METRO. A few steps in that direction would have ensured substantial escalation in box office returns.

From the past

KYA LOVE STORY HAI has proved to be a disaster at the box office with a fall greater than 90% in the second week. Yet another big disappointment to the names of Tusshar Kapoor and Ayesha Takia, KLSH got home just 25 lakhs which meant that the film is now ending its run with just a little above 3 crores. With nothing much expected from the DVD market too, the maximum it may earn from this point on is through its music sales and satellite re-runs.

In the industry for around a decade now, one would have expected Tusshar Kapoor to have woken up to good scripts and choose only those projects that actually are helpful to his career. This is why it surprises to see that he has ended up picking up such a clich閐 love story as his solo vehicle and ended up only walking a lot of steps behind.

On the other hand the case Ayesha Takia continues to baffle as on one hand she chooses a brilliant script like DOR while on the other hand she doesn't blink before accepting a KLSH! It's nice to be doing mainstream cinema with 'naach-gaana' routine but not at the cost of a KLSH!

After a second week drop of 70%, BIG BROTHER crashed by another 70% in its third week to gain 40 lakhs more. A total in the excess of 6.5 crore is certainly not flattering but considering the fact that the film comes at a time when Sunny is an all time low, there was hardly a multiplex release for BIG BROTHER and the film was sold at throwaway prices, this kind of total is good enough for  'coverage' status.

Priyanka Chopra has luckily come out unscathed since her presence was neither highlighted in the film nor was made as a talking point. Keeping a low profile throughout the promotion and release of the film, she has been left untouched by all from within and outside the industry who have termed BIG BROTHER as an out and out Sunny-Guddu film.

All of this brings to light a film that has actually ended up benefiting everyone in the film, with or without the promotion they got before the film's release. BHEJA FRY. A film that came out of nowhere with hardly 10 days promotion, it now stands as the biggest HIT of the year when it comes to sheer percentage of gains over investment. The film had yet another fantastic week with mere 30% fall in collections and 1.5 crore more coming in its third week means that this Sagar Bellary film has now touched 6 crores.

A consistent run in the first 3 weeks proves that the film has gained massive appreciation and an ever increasing word of mouth. When the biggest of films with biggest of banners are failing to gather such numbers today in spite of releasing at more than 300 cinemas, this small film that is currently running at mere 100 cinemas has created such a storm.

Steady in the list of Top 3 movies that have been in the running week after week, NAMASTEY LONDON had its first sub-1 crore week as it collected 80 lakhs in its 6th week. Taking an expected 50% fall, the film now has a total in excess of 36 crores and should close around 37 crores. The film now marks a hat-trick of box office successes for Akshay Kumar after PHIR HERA PHERI and BHAGAM BHAG

Collections of THE NAMESAKE have started declining now with just about 10 lakhs coming in its 6th week. Looking at making an exit from majority of theaters in a fortnight's time, the film stands at a respectable 4.5 crore. On the other hand VIVAH has gained respect plus created history by refusing to budge down from its enviable position even after completing its Silver Jubilee.

In the week gone by, it ended up gaining more than 20% in its collections over last week with 17 lakhs more coming in. At a consistent rate with which the film is getting richer by 15 lakhs or more week after week, it is now almost impossible to predict the total at which VIVAH would end. At more than 32 crore and still counting, the situation cannot get better than that!

In the future

Anurag Basu and Emraan Hashmi have together given successful films like MURDER and GANGSTER. Ironically they find themselves on the warring end at the box office as their METRO and GOOD BOY BAD BOY release together. METRO has been in news for more than 6 months now with maximum impetus coming during last 2 months. Surprisingly the news hasn't quite turned into immense hype or buzz as would have been expected from a film with a superhit soundtrack by Pritam. Don't expect a 100% opening though a beginning of over 50% is very much on the cards and acceptable too considering the film is about characters rather than heroes.

On the other hand GOOD BOY BAD BOY hasn't quite made a buzz for itself in spite of coming from premium production house like Mukta Arts and boasting of Emraan Hashmi as the star attraction. The film needs to be an out and out laugh riot to make much of an impression at the box office and will depend a lot on word of mouth.

Irrfan's METRO arrives as his NAMESAKE completes 50 days
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, May 11, 2007]

It's 'Sirf Khushi No Gham' for Irrfan Khan.

On one hand his THE NAMESAKE completes 50 days today, on the other his next film LIFE IN A..METRO hits the screens as well!

A Mira Nair film, THE NAMESAKE opened to immense critical acclaim but an ordinary audience response 7 weeks back in India. Still, the confidence that the producers and the exhibitioners showed in the project meant that the film saw an extended run at the theaters.

Results were for everyone to be seen as the film just didn't end up covering it's cost but also ended up collecting good profits for everyone who had invested in the film. As things stand today, the film has collected around 4.5 crore while it's DVD release is on the anvil.

Irrfan Khan can ensure bouquets to keep coming since the promos indicate LIFE IN A..METRO to be featuring him in yet another pivotal role. Also, the reports from insiders indicate yet another quality film in the offering by Anurag Basu which means good news for both Irrfan and his fans!

"Anurag didn't let me cut my hair" - Pritam
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, May 11, 2007]

Would Pritam finally be having a hair cut now?

That's a question that his fans and friends have been asking him ever since he adopted a rock star persona by keeping long hair and a beard. Pritam has been carrying this look for time immemorial now and on being asked the question, he replied - "This was a look I was carrying for quite a few months before the BAND METRO happened. Since it was a rock band, my look was suiting the image that we wanted to give to the band so I stuck to it."

He laughs, "Now even when I am done with creating the music and being a part of the music videos, Anurag (Basu), film's director, has given me strict instructions not to cut my hair and shave my beard till he gives a green signal. He wants the look to remain till the release of LIFE IN A..METRO and God knows for how long more!"

"For my own good, I need to play an interesting character" - Emraan Hashmi
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, May 11, 2007]

8 months after the release of DIL DIYA HAI that didn't quite meet with a good box office response, Emraan Hashmi would be seeing a release to his name today - GOOD BOY BAD BOY.

Directed by Ashwini Chaudhary, the film was kick started in January last year but it is only now that the film has reached the theaters. Why? "That's right, the film's shooting began during that time but there were some extra days required for the shoot since we needed a real college as a background", clarifies Emraan, "In the fact the film was ready for post production around October last year but since Subashji [Subhash Ghai] wanted the film to arrive during college vacation period, it was decided to bring the film in May this year."

Agreed, but there also have been murmurs about so-called fallout between the director of the film Ashwini Chaudhary and the showman. How much of that has been true? "Frankly speaking I have no idea if something like that happen or not", he says while steering away from any controversy, "I am not aware about anything happening behind the doors because as far as I am concerned, I have seen a chilled out atmosphere all through the shooting of the film. Now if something has taken place beyond that then I have least idea about it."

Since GOOD BOY BAD BOY is a comedy, how much does he see himself progressing vis-

"International doors have opened for Bollywood" - Celina
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, May 12, 2007]

After Aishwarya Rai, another actress of Bollywood is going international. Celina Jaitley, Miss India Universe, has recently signed an international film. It's a New Zealand - Australian co-production, "Love Has No Language".

This production house has already created a sensation making the trilogy "Lord Of The Rings". Not only this, the technical advisor of that trilogy - Mr. Ken Kahn - will be directing the film.

Celina will be portraying the character of a NRI girl who is born and brought up in New Zealand opposite Australian actor Ben Mitchell. She is not only excited about working in an international project but about the role she will be playing.

Here she has a chance to prove her mettle as an actress without doing only the dancing and singing sequences. The shooting will be starting in the middle of this month.

May it be a glamorous or non glamorous role Celina does it beautifully. In this project she will be playing a character that is glamorous but totally Indian. She has that Indian values but her view point of looking towards life is different from her parents.

According to Celina she is very happy because the international door has opened for Bollywood and every actor will be getting the chance to do an international project. We are also hopeful with this New Zealand- Australian venture "Love Has No Language" where people will get to notice Celina's acting talent.

Tanushree's Negative Side
IndiaGlitz [Monday, May 14, 2007]

Our very own miss India Tanushree Dutta is now changing her image from sex symbol to simple and sidhsadha role.

Right after winning the title of Miss India she has started her career in director Aditya Datt s film "Aashiq Banaya Aapne" as a leading lady of two heroes, Emraan Hasmi and Sonu Sood. But she had signed the film "Chocolate" much before Aashiq Banaya Aapne.

She has done a glamorous role in Aashiq banaya Aapne but now she is doing the different characters in three different films. In " Raqeeb" Tanushree  will be experimenting with her character, she is playing negative characters which have three different shades. It is a musical thriller where she will be trying to break her image as an ultra glam role.

Winning the Miss India Universe pageant now she knows how to manage the ultra glamorous image and her acting capability side by side. Right now she is not willing to do any role which doesn't have much scope to show her acting talent.  This time the movie goers and the critics will come to know the new Tanushree Dutta with her new image.

Bobby wants to keep Katrina 'mehfuz'
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, May 14, 2007]

Promotion of APNE is gathering steam and after an initial teaser featuring the three Deols together, music channels have now started featuring a track choreographed on Bobby Deol and Katrina Kaif.

A fast moving dance number composed and sung by Himesh Reshammiya, 'Mehfuz' is the number in question which has its setting on a stage created outdoors. The track has been set on the lines of some recent concerts by leading music channels which were held on open grounds with all the lights, pyrotechnics and the works in place.

Flashy in appeal, 'Mehfuz' boasts of ever-so-stunning Katrina Kaif shaking a leg or two with Bobby who carries on his rock star look from the days of SHAKALAKA BOOM BOOM.

The film also stars Shilpa Shetty in lead with Sunny Deol while Aryan Vaid plays a baddie. Directed by Anil Sharma, the film was finished in a time span of 8 months and is now aiming for a late June/early July release across the globe.

Devgan's SHOLAY and CASH to clash? No way!
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, May 14, 2007]

Would there be a Ajay Devgan v/s Ajay Devgan clash at the box office this July? If Ram Gopal Verma has his way, then there soon may be one.

This is because he is planning to bring his version of SHOLAY, aptly titled RAM GOPAL VERMA KE SHOLAY, on July 13th. So what's wrong in that? Well, the fact is that even Anubhav Sinha has booked his CASH on the same Friday and this decision was taken quite a few days back.

Originally slated to arrive in May, the release of CASH was earlier postponed to June 29th since Anurag wanted some additional work to be done during the film's post production.

Later with AWARAPAN and AAP KAA SURROOR - THE MOVIEE being confirmed for June 29th and APNE expected to join the show too, it became a little too crowded for comfort that led CASH to gracefully pencil in July 13 as the D-day.

Now with Ram Gopal Verma announcing his plans to bring his most ambitious venture ever to the big screen, it is bound to create some more ripples in the distribution circles since both RAM GOPAL VERMA KE SHOLAY and CASH are big enough projects to afford a box office clash.

Also, both of them star Ajay Devgan as a common factor which makes it further dicey for the actor to accept a clash of two of films happening on the same Friday.

Another interesting factor that makes this clash completely avoidable is the fact that ADLABS presents both these films.

All of this makes one strongly believe that one of the films would definitely pull out for a release on a later day and the most plausible candidate for that would be RAM GOPAL VERMA KE SHOLAY since it has announced its release date a little late in the day!

Both RAM GOPAL VERMA KE SHOLAY and CASH are multi starrers with a power packed starcast. While former has Amitabh Bachchan as the principal attraction with Mohanlal and Sushmita Sen as the other heavy weights, CASH is prominently young with Suneil Shetty, Ritiesh Deshmukh, Zayed Khan and Esha Deol adding on the fun.

"I feel like I am a character in a comedy" - Onir
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, May 15, 2007]

Onir is highly amused. After a 2 year journey ever since his debut film MY BROTHER NIKHIL released, he has been enjoying a roller coaster ride in this big and exciting world of Bollywood. Here he shares his journey so far and what really makes him surprised, frustrated and equally amused.

Below is the reproduction of a recently written blog by Onir which has received tremendous reception by his fans and surfers alike:

As I look back at how my first film "My Brother Nikhil" (released 25th march 2005) was received I feel kind of amused.

I remember my fear, anxiety and excitement the day the film got released. It had been a long journey to reach here. It was important for me to realize if the journey was worth making? Would my labor of love be accepted? Was this my mission in life? The response (critics and viewers who saw it) was overwhelming.... and I am still traveling the world with my film.

"What next?" was the obvious question. Another "My brother Nikhil"? ... That was the expectation, but I wanted to run away from that- break the mould.

Today when I look back and analyze.... Did I really try to run away? The answer is "No". It was not that I was flooded with films after MBN, the truth is a big NO. A few offers, mostly to do the kind of film I would never ever want to do. There was always this spoken / unspoken message whenever I met a producer/financier........ " lets make something "different" - "different" meaning not like MBN. Obviously I would not have liked to do another of the same Genre/style. but that is not what was being talked about. It was the subject that was being referred to. No big star(male) was really open to working with me, and I realize that the reason could be the fear of me coming to them with a similar subject.

So I put all the concepts that I had that which were in genre/ subject anywhere close to MBN in the cold storage, because though everyone loved MBN no one wanted to make their own MBN.

Then Came Bas EK Pal, which had a mixed reception from press, rejected by masses and suddenly I was flooded with producers calling me up to make films for them. Why? Is it that I have proved that I could make a film which was not primarily delving into Taboo areas? Had I moved up the ladder because I was dealing with "normal" issues? I don't know.

Today and I know for always MBN will remain to me the most special film, the most important event that changed my life. But I also know that the Love it received is like the affection of people who shed a tear or two at orphanages- donate some money.... but at the same time very few would be willing to adopt a child from there and make him/her his own. Nevertheless I treasure the affection in whichever form it came for my film.

But it makes me think of all those stories in the cold storage and wait for the day I can bring them out.... they are waiting for love....

After the release of my second film Bas Ek Pal (Sept 2006) I have been trying to start my next film. I have signed three films. Have a few more producers wanting to sign me up, but the wait to get to the shooting seems endless. I realize how much time I spend in doing things that I rather not do to get to utter the magic words...

Film making is increasingly becoming dependent not on the script you have but the star (not necessarily an actor) that you have. When you approach a producer/ a producer approaches you the script no longer seems vital. The question is which star can fit into the scheme of things.

I have had an upcoming actress comment "Onir this is too much of a performance oriented role for me, I will get stamped..."; another star(male) commented about his fear of working with me "Isn't he the sensitive type?". I feel like I am a character in a comedy...

I would perfectly accept if someone would have a genuine problem with the script and am open to discussion, but that anyway is never the issue.

Today the Hindi film industry is facing a crisis of sorts, we desperately need twenty fresh actors (male and female).

But who will make the move. People who can take the initiative and introduce new talents do not want to do so. the big banners, established directors and corporate houses are all running after the dates of the same set of actors.

I feel frustrated when constantly I am approached by new talent for being given a chance. Given a choice i would happily work with new comers.... but the big question is where will the finance come from.... and the even bigger question ... how will the film get distributed?

The success of "Bheja Fry", "Black Friday", "Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd" and "Metro" hopefully will open up the industry to look beyond the star system.... lets wait and watch!
