Team of the Year
Winner: Brawn
If you're not familiar with the team's story by now then you haven't been watching Formula One in 2009.Ross Brawntook on a team abandoning the sport to win both the constructors' anddrivers' titles. It got a jump start on most of the field by finding aloophole in the rules and perfecting the double diffuser design for theopening rounds. By the time some of the others caught up, Brawn had amassive points lead. It only won two races in the second half of theseason, but crucially managed its drivers perfectly to secure bothtitles.
Second: Red Bull
Whenthe car was at its best, usually on high-speed tracks, it wasunbeatable. Four of its six victories were one-twos, and the carregistered more fastest laps than any other. Its Achilles heel wasengine reliability. Sebastian Vettelcame dangerously close to using more than the permitted eight enginesover the season, and was forced to restrict his Friday running time toavoid a grid penalty towards the end of the year.
Third: Force India
Eversince Jordan's glory days in 1999, this team, also racing under thenames Midland and Spyker, has appeared to be going backwards. At thestart of the year it had clearly closed the gap but was still at thetail-end of the grid. The in-season testing ban meant development wasless expensive than previous years and that gave it the opportunity toplay catch-up. At the Belgian Grand Prix, Giancarlo Fisichella took pole position and then the team's first podium under Vijay Mallya's ownership.
Crash of the Year
Winner: Lewis Hamilton at Monza
On the final lap of the race Hamilton was chasing Jenson Buttonin an attempt to secure second place and extra championship points. Hischances looked slim at best, but Hamilton wasn't perturbed. Then camethe first Lesmo corner and he pushed too hard, tipping the car into aspin that ended against the barrier. It finished Hamilton's race on thespot - no podium, no points, no prizes.
Second: Jaime Alguersuari at Suzuka
He had one of the most spectacular accidents of the season at Suzukawhen, with nine laps remaining, he made a mistake on the entrance to130R, smashed through a polystyrene advertisement and slammed into thebarrier. The impact was so great that it took several laps under thesafety car for the marshals to clear up the mess and rebuild the tyrewall.
Third: Adrian Sutil v Jarno Trulli at Interlagos
The pair came together on the opening lap after Trulli attempted to pass Sutilcoming out of turn five. The impact sent the Toyota and Force India offthe road in opposite directions and out of the race. But the fireworksdidn't end there - the pair got out of their cars and reconvened on therun-off of turn six for a quick scuffle. Trulli didn't let the incidentdrop, and turned up at the next grand prix with a dossier ofinformation aimed at proving the accident was Sutil's fault. Stewardslater declared the accident was a "racing incident" with neither partyto blame; ironically Trulli was fined US$6,000 for disobeying a racemarshal. |

'Schumi wants to add another title to his name'
If you thought Michael Schumacher's impending return to Formula One was just a publicity gimmick, then you will be in for a shock next year.
The German is said to be ready to add 'to his unparalleled haul of seven drivers' titles' when he enters the 2010 World Championship.
The 40-year-old is reportedly just days away from signing a deal with Mercedes GP that will see him return to the sport more than three years after his retirement.
The Times claims that 'there are now no obstacles to Michael Schumacher's comeback next season with Mercedes Grand Prix and that his neck injury is not expected to be a problem.'
When he eventually signs on the dotted line, Schumacher will team up with Nico Rosberg at Mercedes. The younger German, though, has made it clear in recent weeks that he is not prepared to play second fiddle, saying "at Mercedes, there is no hierarchy. It has always been commonplace, that there are two equal drivers."
It appears there will be a genuine battle for top spot at team as Schumacher is also not ready to take a back seat.
'The impression gained is that the German wants to pick up where he left off with Ferrari when he retired in 2006,' the paper added. 'Those suggesting that he may see his role more as a mentor to Nico Rosberg, the 24-year-old who would be his team-mate, than a team-leading championship contender, are wide of the mark.
'He is said to be looking to add not only to his record 91 grand-prix wins, but also to his unparalleled haul of seven drivers' titles and he has already spent many hours discussing his new car with the Mercedes team.'
