Preparations have begun for the start of the Carling Cup campaign at Portsmouth but without Sunday's two injury victims.

While training resumed at Cobham, the medical team were examining Deco who was unable to start the draw against Manchester United and Ricardo Carvalho who was withdrawn after 11 minutes.

[B]Deco has been diagnosed with a tear in an upper thigh muscle and will be out for approximately two weeks.[/B]

[B]A scan has shown that Carvalho strained a medial collateral ligament in his knee. It is expected to be three-to-four weeks until the central defender is back in action.[/B]

Training at Cobham was split between the need to recover from yesterday's game and the build-up to Wednesday night at Fratton Park. Those who had played a major part in the Man United match underwent a brief warm-down while for the rest of the squad there was a full 90-minute session culminating in extended shooting practice.

LONDON: Luiz Felipe Scolari percaya semangat dipamer Chelsea untuk meragut satu mata dalam pertarungan dengan Manchester United adalah cukup baik dalam usaha kelab barunya itu merampas mahkota kejuaraan Liga Perdana Inggeris (EPL) daripada barisan Sir Alex Ferguson.

Perlawanan itu berakhir dengan Scolari kini terpaksa memikirkan berapa lama dia akan kehilangan bek tengahnya Ricardo Carvalho, yang terhincut-hincut keluar padang pada minit ke-10, dan perancang Deco, yang tidak beraksi selepas tercedera ketika memanaskan badan.

Namun, satu perkembangan terbaru adalah pemain tengah Brazil, Mineiro dijangka menyertai Chelsea ketika ketiadaan Michael Essien yang terpaksa berehat lama serta keadaan Deco yang mengundang rasa gelisah.



"Kehilangan Deco begitu sukar buat kami," kata Scolari. "Gerakan kami dari tengah ke bahagian serangan tidak menjadi selama 15 hingga 20 minit dan mereka menekan kami sepanjang tempoh itu dan berjaya menjaringkan gol."

Difahamkan, Mineiro kini bebas berpindah ke Stamford Bridge kerana kontraknya bersama kelab Jerman, Hertha Berlin sudah tamat.

Walaupun dia mengakui United mencipta banyak peluang menjaringkan gol dalam perlawanan yang berkesudahan seri 1-1, Scolari percaya barisannya mempunyai peluang lebih baik dengan Joe Cole melepaskan dua peluang terbuka dan Nicolas Anelka gagal menyempurnakan hantaran lintang Jose Bosingwa di sebelah kanan.

"Saya sungguh gembira dengan pemain saya kerana mereka memberikan segala-galanya," kata Scolari. "Mereka mencuba, kadang kala tidak begitu bagus, tetapi mereka tetap berusaha.

"Jika kami mempunyai lebih banyak kualiti dalam sepakan terakhir, kami pasti memenangi perlawanan ini. Tetapi mereka menunjukkan kepada saya mereka memiliki semangat menakjubkan.

"Kami berkata sebelum perlawanan bahawa (Michael) Ballack mungkin hanya beraksi 45 minit tetapi dia bermain 70 minit dengan semangat tinggi, cuba memenangi perlawanan,

"John Obi Mikel juga menakjubkan. Dia berada di sebelah kanan, di sebelah kiri, cuba memenangi bola sepanjang masa. Ini semangat yang saya ingin dan jika inilah semangat yang dimiliki Chelsea, maka saya sungguh gembira."

Tandukan Kalou yang menjadi jaringan penyamaan melebarkan rentetan tanpa kalah Chelsea di tempat sendiri kepada 85 perlawanan, tetapi Scolari menegaskan statistik itu tidak memberi apa-apa makna. - AFP

Chelsea Football Club can confirm the signing of Mineiro who wasreleased by Hertha Berlin as a free agent at the end of last season.
The deal, the details of which will remain confidential, will see him remain at the club until the end of the season.

Mineiro becomes the third Brazilian in the squad,linking up with manager Luiz Felipe Scolari and his backroom staffalongside Juliano Belletti and Alex.
A defensive midfielder, he has 24 caps for Brazil, and was a memberof the 2006 World Cup squad, as well as appearing against England atWembley in 2007.

Mineiro was released by Hertha at the end of last season, and has since been unattached.
Upon announcing the imminent arrival, Scolari explained the decision to sign the 33-year-old.
'He is a player that I need because I lost Michael Essien for six months. I have one midfielder like him, Mikel.


'So this week he will not play but maybe after 15 days to two weeks,he is ready to play normal games. He needs to play some games in thereserve team, and for me it is very good because I have one more playerin this position. If not I have to put in Belletti or Ferreira, orBallack, and they are not for this position.

'I say to fans of Chelsea, if they remember Makelele, Mineiro is thesame. Good positionally, a very good marker. He is a man that works forthe other players and he is also a good man outside of the pitch.'

Mineiro spent 18 months in the German capital, scoring twice in 36 league appearances, including a debut strike against Hamburg.
Prior to that the player, whose full name is Carlos Luciano daSilva, had played his entire career in his homeland, representing SaoPaulo and Sao Caetano after beginning his career with Ponte Preta.

While at Sao Paulo, he scored the goal that defeated Liverpool in the 2005 Fifa Club World Championship.
We are delighted to welcome him to Stamford Bridge, and wish him well in his time here
