"Hero" faces no challengers at Japanese B.O.

Written by Mark Schilling

TOKYO -- "Hero," a courtroom-drama-cum-romance based on a hit Fuji TV series about a rebel prosecutor, finished its first weekend at the number one spot, earning Y1.08 billion ($9.5 million dollars) on 750,000 admissions.
Released on 475 screens by distrib Toho -- a record for a Japanese pic -- "Hero" scored a sky-high screen average of $19,790. Toho now predicts the pic will finish north of $88 million and may even surpass the current number one for the year: "Pirates of the Caribbean: World's End."

Fuji TV producer Chihiro Kameyama, the mastermind behind both "Hero" and the smash hit "Bayside Shakedown" pics about cops in the trendy Tokyo Bay area, is even more upbeat, saying that "Hero" may beat "Bayside Shakedown 2," which set a record for a live-action local pic in 2003 with $152.6 million. "I am in the fortunate position of being able to break my own record," Kameyama said in a statement. "If any title, "Hero" has a great chance to be the one to achieve that status, so I'm really excited."

"Hero" began as a Fuji TV series, starring local megastar Takuya Kimura as a rule-breaking delinquent-turned-prosecutor, that racked up stupendous 30-plus ratings for every episode when it was broadcast from January to March 2001. Instead of signing Kimura and company to another season, however, Fuji dropped the show for five years, finally reviving it for a two-hour special that aired in July of 2006 -- and also scored over 30. By this time, a "Hero" feature was in the works.

In addition to Kimura and most of the original TV series cast, the pic stars Korean heartthrob Lee-Byung Hun and was shot partly in Busan. Not surprisingly, the pic will screen at the upcoming Pusan film festival and is skedded to be released on 250 screens in Korea -- a record for a Japanese pic in the territory. Other theatrical releases throughout Asia are also planned.

The latest live-action movie from iconic director Oshii Mamoru (56) is another segment in his ongoing lifework, the Kerberos Saga. An omnibus movie in six parts, "Shin Onna Tachiguishi Retsuden" is quite a mouthful, appropriately enough as the women of the title are "Female Fast Food Grifters". These tachiguishi (literally "masters of eating on the go") have featured in much of Oshii's work all the way back to the TV anime version of "Urusei Yatsura" in 1984. Some of the works, which can be in anime, live-action or manga format, are limited release or direct-to-DVD. The latest movie will be screened at the 20th Tokyo International Film Festival in October, and features top actress Mizuno Miki (33) in her first shoot-em-up action role. But the movie will only have a limited run at one cinema from November 10. Alongside his old friend and fellow animator Miyazaki Hayao, Oshii is definitely the less commercial, though his 1995 classic "Ghost in the Shell" and its 2004 sequel "Innocence" won him wide international acclaim.

Rina Akiyama stars in 90-second drama series
Wed, September 5, 2007 (2:02pm EDT)

Kei Kurashima's gag manga "24 no Hitomi" is being adapted by TBS as a live-action series. The show will be the network's third "Ippunhan Gekijo" program - each episode lasts only 90 seconds.

Broadcast will begin on October 1, airing late night Mondays through Wednesdays (between 3:00 and 4:00am). The series is scheduled to run for about six months for a total of 80 episodes.

Rina Akiyama plays the starring role of Hitomi-sensei, a young teacher whose constant lies cause trouble around her. The character is a far cry from the admirable teacher in Sakae Tsuboi's 1952 postwar novel "Nijushi no Hitomi" ("Twenty-Four Eyes"), which inspired the title for Kurashima's manga.

The rest of the cast includes Ruito Aoyagi, Toshiya Sakai, Mizuki Sugasawa, Moe Miura, Ai Shinozaki, Yujiro Kazama, and Kazuya Suzuki.

Wife of globe's Marc Panther arrested for narcotics
Wed, September 5, 2007 (7:23pm EDT)

Kaoruko Sakai, the wife of Marc Panther of pop band globe, has been arrested for possession of narcotics.

On June 18 in Roppongi, a police officer stopped Sakai, who was driving with her friend. During questioning, the officer discovered a small bag with traces of a white powder, which was later identified as ketamine. A voluntary urine exam tested positive for both ketamine and cocaine, which led to Sakai being officially taken into custody on the 3rd of this month.

She admitted to using ketamine to relieve stomach pains, but stated that she was unaware of using cocaine.

Sakai has been married to Marc Panther since 2002. She is somewhat of a celebrity herself, having appeared on television and in magazines multiple times. She also operates a baby clothing brand named Irie Family and its related store, Crown Heart.

Miike Takashi's "Sukiyaki Western Django" was screened for the press and general public yesterday (Japan time), receiving totally opposite reactions. During the press screening, a number of people left the theater during the first half of the movie and afterwards there was only a sprinkling of applause. Later that evening the general public got their look at the movie, and showered the mix of spaghetti western and Japanese period drama with tumultuous applause. Some were no doubt delighted to see festival favorite Quentin Tarantino (44), who makes a cameo appearance. And though the rest of the cast is Japanese, including top comedian Ishibashi Takaaki (45, best known abroad for his role in 1994's "Major League II"), the dialog is entirely in English. Asked at a press conference why a Japanese director would possibly want to make a "macaroni western" (as they are known in Japan), Miike (47) said, "When I was growing up, spaghetti westerns were in their heyday. We played with toy guns and naturally wanted to make this kind of movie when we grew up." Star Itoh Hideaki (32) said, "Though I don't speak the language at all, this experience made me want to do another movie in English." When he added, "And I'd really like to make another spaghetti western in Japan, but this time in Italian," he was warmly applauded by local reporters. Django is Miike's fourth movie to be shown at Venice, but is his first competitive entry. The winner of the Golden Lion award will be announced on September 8.

Oricon survey: Ichiro named as Japan's pride
Thu, September 6, 2007 (3:05am EDT)

Oricon recently surveyed 2,000 people, asking them which celebrity Japan can be internationally proud of. Not too surprisingly, the #1 answer by a landslide was Seattle Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki. He received more than 700 votes, with the closest competition coming from actor Ken Watanabe (146 votes) and director Takeshi Kitano (145 votes). Fellow Major League player Hideki Matsui received only 39 votes to rank 5th among males, right behind Takuya Kimura.

Competition among the women was tighter. Actresses Sayuri Yoshinaga and Rinko Kikuchi tied for first, both one vote ahead of pop star Hikaru Utada. Ayumi Hamasaki tied for fourth with judo superstar Ryoko Tani, five votes behind Utada.

Rounding out the top ten in the male category were soccer player Shunsuke Nakamura, former soccer star Hidetoshi Nakata, director Hayao Miyazaki, Arashi member Kazunari Ninomiya, and the late Akira Kurosawa. Meanwhile, the women's list included 74-year-old talento Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, current Miss Universe Riyo Mori, figure skater Shizuka Arakawa, Yoko Ono, Sadako Ogata (president of the Japan International Cooperation Agency), and teen figure skater Mao Asada.

Miike Takashi's "Sukiyaki Western Django" received a five-minute standing ovation after its late-night official screening at the Venice International Film Festival. After earlier mixed reviews, the enthusiastic reception was a relief for Miike (47) and stars Itoh Hideaki (32) and Momoi Kaori (55), who said "The screening was very late, I was so happy people didn't decide to go home." The movie was shown in front of a full house of 1,000 people from midnight. It is a contender for the Golden Lion award, whose winner will be announced on Saturday.

[JAPAN] Matsuda Seiko to perform in Okinawa 24 years after being attacked by fan during concert

Matsuda Seiko (45) has not performed in Okinawa since she was attacked by a fan 24 years ago.

Back in March 28, 1983 during a performance when a crazed fan ran out and tried to attack Matsuda with a makeshift steel weapon.  Matsuda tried to protect herself with her hands but was struck a few times.  Matsuda was rushed to the hospital where no brain abnormalities were seen on x-ray.

The attacker said in court that he attacked Matsuda because he wanted to become famous.

Despite the painful incident that kept her away from performing in Okinawa for over two decades, Matsuda performed at the Laguna Garden Hotel on the 5th.
