Consumer Fair Targets 46,000 Visitors
Bandar Seri Begawan - Setting a new record high in terms of size and quality, Consumer Fair Part 3 2009 (CF3) raised its curtains yesterday at the International Convention Centre, Berakas.
From January 8-11, with 250 booths occupied by quality vendors from India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Syria and Chinese Taipei and, of course, Brunei Darussalam, the fair not only offers a myriad of products and services under one roof, there are also opportunities for all visitors (young and old) to win attractive prizes.
The fair is also seen as a stage for local producers or business community to showcase products and services, as previous Consumers Fairs have been a crowd-puller.
The fair was officially launched by Pehin Dato Paduka Awg Hj Dani bin Hj Ibrahim, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs.
This year, the fair expects to attract more than 46,000 visitors who will enjoy significant discounts, special prices and free-to-enter support activities. This is in addition to the special CF3 lucky draw, through which funds will be raised for local charities.
Dato Hj Danial Hj Hanafiah, Executive Director of Sunlit Advertising, said this year's fair has set a new record.
CFI (January 2-6 2008), featured 201 booths and boasted more than 40,000 visitors, and was the biggest fair at the time in the country.
CF2 (May 1-4 2008), featured more than 220 booths, occupying both Multipurpose and Plenary Halls at the ICC, creating new records in terms of sheer floor space and the number of exhibitors.
Now, CF3, featuring 250 booths expects to host a record shattering 46,000 visitors. Also present at the launch was Jackson Ting, Sunlit Managing Director.
CF3's major partners are Radio Television Brunei (Broadcast Media Partner), Brunei Press (Print Media Partner), Panacorn (Audio-Visual Partner), Telbru (Communication Partner), Pelikan (Colouring Partner), Co-Leta Trading Company (Colouring Contest Partner) and Gomex Enterprise (CCTV Provider).
Jason Tee, Sunlit Marketing and Sales Manager said, "We are set to break the visitor attendance record again, not only because of the chance to win a Toyota Vios and other very attractive prizes, but because CF3 will feature an unprecedented 250 exhibition booths. Quality visitors, both local and overseas — India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Syria and Chinese Taipei, promoting their best consumer products, are participating. This will add a more international flavour to CF3, something that Brunei consumers will appreciate."
CF1, 2 and 3 are uniquely different from other expos. There are no product restrictions. CF3 improves on the already wide range by adding the following categories: Food and Beverage, World of Toys, Beauty and Fashion, Home Appliances, Hoe Decor, IT and Communication, Travel and Tourism, Banking, Finance and Insurance.
"In addition to the special lucky draw, CF3 also features other support activities which will help to draw in the crowds," Tee said. The interesting activities include Brunei CyberGames Competition, organised by the event's partner Ranoadidas.com, a colouring contest for kids, a Treasure Hunt as well as the Longest Drawing in Brunei, to ensure that the fair provides an exciting time, not only for the adults but the children as well.
In addition, Tee said that the hosting of CF23 is Sunlit's way of thanking its business associates and the public for their staunch support in 2008. Apart from being a useful and effective platform for local small & medium enterprises to showcase their products, CF3 is expected to provide for an important trickle-down effect to benefit other businesses and industries, resulting from the influx of overseas exhibitors and tourists, who are expected to visit the fair. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin |

Two survivors of gas explosion critical in RIPAS
| By Hj Ahmed Shaheeb and Malek HashimThe 16 survivors of a gas explosion that ripped through a seafood-processing factory in Serasa two days ago that killed three people, have been receiving medical care at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital ever since the tragedy struck. Two of the survivors are currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after having suffered more than 80 per cent burn wounds to their bodies. Others in less critical condition have been admitted to the surgical intensive care unit whilst those with minor wounds have been recovering in various other wards. Zaw Min Tin, a Myanmar national, suffered a perforated left eardrum as a result of the massive explosion. Rais Zulkarnain, from Indonesia, was treated for puncture wounds as a result of pieces of shrapnel that hit his back during the blast. Both have since been discharged after receiving medical attention. According to the nurse on duty, the wards are equipped with a disaster plan, which they adhere to during times of emergencies where they can call upon standby staff to assist with the handling of the patients. He added that the gas explosion was the worst incident in 2008. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation

Quicker border crossing with Brunei E-Gate
By Lyna Mohamad
The Smart IC scanner used in the auto gate system.
Ahmaddin Hj Abd Rahman delivering his presentation.
Statistics recorded by the Department of Immigration as of November 2008 showed that the Brunei International Airport saw a total of 364,486 arrivals and 351,224 departures to and from the Sultanate.
Of these figures, the month of August showed the most arrivals and departures numbering 36,964 and 37,141 passengers respectively, while the lowest departure rate was recorded in the month of January with a total of 26,263 passengers and arrivals in April, numbering 27,966 passengers.
Immigration and National Registration Acting Director Ahmaddin Hj Abd Rahman disclosed this at a brief presentation during the official launching of the Auto-Gate operation at the airport last Wednesday.
Touching on the E-Gate specification, the acting director pointed out that the MPR retractable barrier of the auto gate system is a user-friendly access control barrier designed for rapid pedestrian entrance and exit.
As soon a person walks into the directional beam, the barrier opens and the open-hold time is activated. The opposite direction is disabled and an alarm is activated when a person comes from the wrong direction, and, if for any reason the person does not walk through the lane before the 'hold open timer' has elapsed, the barrier will close and the opening input erases.
The barrier will close immediately after the person passes through both safety beams. The 'hold open timer' is erased and it will only close if all safety beams are clear, meaning that no person or object is activating the beams.
The main advantage of the Brunei eGate is that it will allow for faster border crossing with ePassports and FTC Card or Brunei Smart IC. Additionally, it provides higher security as no entry or exit will be possible without scanning.
During the brief presentation, the Acting Director touched on the 'E' projects of the department that includes the Smart Identity Card Project, Passport Production System; Biometric Passport and MRP Passport, Border Control Expansion Project; Stickers, E-gate, Systems Migrations Toward E-Government; Visa and Passes Stickers and E-Visa and the Enhancement of Smart IC System and Birth and Death and Adoption System.
Meanwhile, the department's Border Control System comprises of Infra-Red License Plate Camera, Dermalog XF-1 Color Scanner, Mouse Pad + Finger Login, E-Gate and 4-Finger Scanner. |

Scholars to share insight, expertise on post-modern and organic farming
A DELEGATION of scholars from Mingdao University of central Taiwan is scheduled to arrive in Brunei next week to assist the Sultanate in developing its agricultural industry, the Taiwan News reported yesterday.
According to the publication, the academics, who will be led by University President Wang Da-yung were invited to share their insight and expertise advice on the workings of post-modern and organic agriculture as well as to provide suggestions on how to develop the sector sustainably.
Expected to depart from Taiwan on January 13, the delegation will stay in the Sultanate over four days. Among the activities which have been scheduled during their stay include an audience with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, talks with local experts and government officials at an agricultural technology forum and site visits for the scholars to get a better understanding of Brunei's geography.
Improving the agricultural sector has been one of the Sultanate's main objectives in diversifying the economy away from the nation's heavy dependence on oil and gas exports. It is also in line with His Majesty's recent call to improve the nation's agricultural output and increase self-sufficiency.
A recent report indicated that Brunei's self-sufficiency rate for rice production currently stands at 3.12 per cent, with the bulk of rice consumed in the Sultanate imported from Thailand.
In March 2008, the assistant director at the Agriculture Department spoke of plans to raise the self-sufficiency rate to 10 per cent, although no targets were specified.
Meanwhile, during a working visit by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office to the department in December last year, a 20 per cent increase in rice production had been targeted for 2010 and an increase of 60 per cent by 2015.
In efforts to achieve these targets, there are plans to introduce new rice fields in the Brunei-Muara, Belait and Temburong Districts, as well as improvements to rice field infrastructures and the use of high-yielding variety seeds, which altogether may cost up to $50 million. (ODM1)

Think out of box, young 'tycoons' told
Future entrepreneurs: Some of the participants at HSBC's Young Entrepreneur Awards 2008 / 2009. Chang Ai Lee, senior relationship manager of HSBC, briefing participants. Picture: BT/Junaidi Bahrum

YOUNG business entrepreneurs have been encouraged to deviate from the plans given, to introduce fresh ideas.
They have also been encouraged to enhance their presentation skills to prepare them for the final round of the Young Entrepreneur Awards 2008 / 2009.
Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) yesterday, organised a business plan writing workshop at the Orchid Garden Hotel, for the teams that have been shortlisted for the second round of the HSBC Young Entrepreneur Awards 2008/2009. Twenty teams have been selected based on several criteria pertaining to their creativity, originality and commercial feasibility.
The young potential entrepreneurs have been advised on the main foundation of business summarised through four topics. The topics were delivered by officials from HSBC and KPMG, an international auditing firm.
Chang Ai Lee, the senior relationship manager of HSBC, reiterated in her topic, (What makes a good business plan?), that uniqueness plays a main role in the commercial feasibility of all business aspects. "Ideas such as normal cybercafes are not original and lacks the creativity, thus will not make it to the final stages of the competition which will be held in Hong Kong," she said. She also encouraged the young participants, who were made up of students, to learn the basis of accounting to ensure sustainability once they start implementing their ideas into business.
"Be realistic in your projections. Since Brunei Darussalam is driven by a relatively small market, your projections should be as accordingly to demand. Do not expect and project your income into millions in a short-term," she urged, adding that knowing the consumer's needs is also a key role in long-term sustainability which when put into their working paper could lead to good results later on.
Common shortfalls in business ideas are also one of the concerns, she said. "Dependency on factors which are beyond the grasp of most such as government policies, acquisition or endorsement from large shareholders, too many concepts which could lead to confusion and shortcomings in business implementation," she said.
Tareq Muhmood, the Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Brunei, congratulated the youngsters on their steps towards success. "I know that the young entrepreneurs of Brunei Darussalam are intuitive enough to compete globally," he said, adding that persistency and commitment from the participants could guide them towards bigger achievements.
"I fully believe in the Brunei talent," he said simply to indicate his full confidence towards the young participants who will be representing HSBC and Brunei in the Regional Young Entrepreneur Awards to be held in Hong Kong in June.
Qualified teams from the second round will proceed to a third, where they will be judged by the intuitiveness of their initial ideas designed to attract potential investors. The 10-page business proposals, which is required of them, will bring the team a "self-development" fund amounting to $3,000 and entitle them to compete with ideas from abroad in June. Should they be successful then, they could stand a chance to win HK$100,000 to implement their ideas into actual business.
The competition was launched in January 2008 and aims to inspire young entrepreneurs to provide intuitive business ideas for both domestic and regional growth and also to provide incentives as a kick-start for their businesses.
Brunei Darussalam, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Bangladesh and Vietnam will be competing for the grand prize. (JNB1).

Malaysia targets Brunei tourists
Arrivals up: Last year Malaysia had witnessed 5.1 per cent in the tourist arrivals. Picture: AP
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
Saturday, January 10, 2009
MALAYSIA's tourism minister has announced that the country would be expanding its Zoom! Malaysia promotional campaign to include Brunei as well as other countries from the Asean region, as part of its directive of maintaining its tourism figures this year despite the global economic challenges which lie ahead. Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said also announced that a total of 1,172,154 tourist arrivals to Malaysia were made by Bruneians throughout the course of last year, the New Straits Times reported yesterday.
The tourism campaign was introduced in Singapore on January 1 and will be followed-up by launching the campaign in Brunei and Indonesia, Datuk Seri Azalina was quoted as saying.
The tourism minister launched the six-month campaign in Singapore at the start of the new year with advertisements of tourist destinations in Malaysia posted in strategic locations of Singapore's extensive public transport system, according to the Tourism Malaysia website. Under the recent Tourism Malaysia market structure, Singapore and Brunei markets are under the purview of the Domestic Promotions Division, a statement from the website said.
The Zoom! Malaysia campaign is one of the government's efforts to promote and develop its domestic tourism. The campaign encourages Singaporeans and soon, other Asean nationals to plan their holidays and explore various places of interest in Malaysia. The campaign is expected to give an extensive exposure to the products, activities and tourism destinations in Malaysia.
Datuk Seri Azalina said that approximately RM50 million to RM60 million will be allocated for promotional purposes through mediums such as print and electronic media advertising campaigns in the Asean countries.
Last year, tourist arrivals in Malaysia amounted to 22,052,488 as compared to 20,972,822 in 2007, translating into a 5.1 per cent increase. Singapore remained the largest generator of tourists to Malaysia in 2008 with a total of 11,003,492 tourists visiting the country last year, the tourism minister said.
From January to November 2008, 9,973,479 tourist arrivals were reported by Tourism Malaysia while Bruneian tourists accounted for 919,072 arrivals. In November 2008 alone, 95,112 tourist arrivals were made by Bruneians. (ODM1)

Lifeguards a must along Brunei beaches
By Ben Ng
Lifeguards are needed along Brunei's beaches to effectively reduce the numbers drowning at sea.
"We should have lifeguards at beaches especially ones where people regularly frequent," a civil servant told the Weekend Bulletin yesterday.
He said that although lifeguards enable us to ensure the safety of the public along all of Brunei's coastline, they would also certainly be effective around areas where a lot of people go to swim.
"We can't put lifeguards at every beach. However, saving lives is always a priority, and should always be made a priority," said the 25-year-old officer.
"It would be quite effective providing they are properly trained and managed," he added.
A student consultant agreed that there should be lifeguards present, but he says that the idea would not work on its own as the public needs to be educated as well on areas where it's safe to swim.
"We should have designated areas where it's safe for people to swim, especially during school holidays. That is the time when the authorities have to be even more vigilant," he said.
The consultant said that Brunei should also look towards Australia and how they manage their search and rescue operations. "Maybe some lifeguard activities should be held as well, something to create more awareness."
"We have lifeguards at public swimming pools, so why can't we have the same at beaches?" questioned a teacher who frequently takes her three children to the beach.
"But of course, we as guardians, should also be responsible. Parents should be encouraged to keep watch over their children. But I still think lifeguards are essential at this juncture, especially after the recent drownings," she said.
"None of us want to see a repeat of the tragedies that occurred late last year, and I feel it would be effective to have at least two or three lifeguards along the stretch of beaches. Since we have security guards we should also have lifeguards."
Dangerous situations at the beach can be prevented, said Dr Becek, who recently saved the life of a young boy who was swimming at Tungku Beach.
However, the doctor was unable to save the life of the boy's 10-year-old brother, who went missing and was only found the next day by Search and Rescue personnel who stood watch overnight.
"(The boy's) sister came up to me crying, pointing towards her brother in the distance," said Dr Becek. "So I took off my shirt and ran towards the boy who was swimming near some rocks.
"The waves were enormous and strong too. There was a short moment where I was able to grab (the boy) and pull him to safety," he explained.
"The current was really strong and it took all my energy to swim back to shore. And when I turned around to look for the other boy he had disappeared."
He believes situations such as these can be prevented. "I think the lesson we can all learn from the experience is that the authorities should erect signs warning people not to swim there. Or maybe some rescue boats or rafts should be stationed there. And Brunei would have a better image if these kinds of signs were there, especially at beaches where a lot of people go to swim."
The relevant authorities declined to comment when approached by the Weekend Bulletin, except for the Fire and Rescue Department who expressed their full support for introducing lifeguards to Brunei's beaches.
In a written statement, the Department said that they are fully aware of the accidents that occur at the beach, saying that the country is currently experiencing unstable weather conditions. They also stressed that no one should keep their children unattended while at the beach, even if they know that their child can swim.
"If necessary, bring along life jackets as the waves can be irregular and the currents unpredictable," the Department said.
In 2006, the Department received four emergency calls from the public where they reported a total of four drownings. In 2007, the number doubled to eight deaths by drowning. The Department has received a total of seven emergency calls from January up to the 5th of December last year, of which five were drowning cases. |
