Iraqi militants holding 10 foreigners captive
South Korea - As many as 10 foreigners were being held captive with a South Korean recently abducted by militants in Iraq, a news report said on Monday.
The group included a European journalist and 'third country' employees for the US based contractor Kellogg Brown and Root, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported, citing the employer of the South Korean victim.

Mr Kim Chun Ho, head of South Korea's Gana General Trading Co., told a Yonhap reporter in Baghdad by phone from Mosul that some of the abductees were seen by an Iraqi go-between who had visited the kidnappers to try negotiating the South Korean's release.
On Sunday, the Arab satellite TV network Al-Jazeera aired a videotape purportedly from Al Qaeda-linked militants showing the South Korean hostage begging for his life and pleading with his government to withdraw troops from Iraq. The militants have threatened to kill the captive if Seoul does not pull its soldiers.
South Korean media identified the hostage as Kim Sun Il, 33, an employee of South Korea's Gana General Trading Co., a supplier for the U.S. military.
Mr Kim Sun Il was abducted on June 17, and his employer tried to negotiate his freedom before notifying the South Korean government, South Korea's Foreign Ministry said earlier on Monday.

THIS is what happens when you give a budget-conscious genre writer-director like David Twohy too much money.
Story and good sense go ka-blooey in the face of an overwrought onslaught of computer-generated graphics. In other words, he has caught the George Lucas bug.
Twohy's Pitch Black (2000) was a crafty, tight-knit, small-budget, science-fiction flick which worked its magic with thrilling efficiency. Vin Diesel played a hulking murderer who turns out to be the salvation of a stranded group of space travellers.
Flexing his bulging biceps and hawking up a gravelly growl from his six-pack abs as Riddick, he did such a good job that Universal has built a US$120 million (S$206.3 million) showcase around the character.
Hence, this rather Riddick-ulous, and bloated, confection. Things get off to a ponderous start with solemn choral music and gigantic statues amid a devastated and obviously CGI-ed landscape.
And you know it will not get any better when a lengthy voiceover offers an exposition laced with mumbo jumbo mythic language about the Lord Marshall (Colm Feore) and the Underverse (whatever). Even the crisp, caramel tones of the venerable Dame Judi Dench cannot rescue that clunky bit of exposition.
Dench, dressed in flowing robes like she has wandered into this movie by accident from the Greek epic where she rightfully belongs, is Aeron, a mysterious Air elemental.
Her existence is due primarily to the patchy script's dire need for narrative coherence. So Dench wafts in occasionally to haul the creaky plot forward.
The Lord Marshall is the leader of some feared army called the Necromongers, who believe in an afterlife in a place called the Underverse. And they are out to conquer and convert worlds.
The only one who can stop the Lord Marshall is Riddick, on the run from bounty hunters since the events of Pitch Black.
There is not much sense in the plot but there is a whole lot of slow-motion running and action-hero Vogue-ing from Diesel. Unfortunately, he lacks the steam to power his own movie.
His appeal in Pitch Black was as part of a canny ensemble of solid character actors. As a leading man, his moody scowl can only carry him so far before he begins to look like nothing more than a grunting Neanderthal.
Even the CGI landscapes, stunning vistas so beautifully rendered that graphic artists and fantasy art fans will have a field day, have more personality than Diesel.
Like a pixelated screen, his charisma dissipates on closer examination. Let us hope that the threatened Riddick trilogy stops right here. |

PELAJAR MELAYU ANTARA 7 PENGEDAR DADAH DITAHAN DUA orang wanita Melayu, salah seorang daripada mereka pelajar, merupakan antara tujuh pengedar dadah yang berjaya diberkas Biro Narkotik Pusat (CNB) dalam beberapa operasi kelmarin.
Yang lain termasuk seorang pengarah syarikat peralatan kesihatan dan yang lain merupakan promoter pil langsing dan jururias tangan dan kuku.
Dalam kenyataannya, CNB berkata dua wanita Melayu itu diberkas bersama-sama seorang lagi wanita Cina berusia 22 tahun pada 8.30 malam di luar restoran McDonald's di Pusat Hiburan Jurong East.
Mereka didapati menjual 10 pil Ecstasy kepada seorang pegawai CNB yang sedang menyamar.
Wanita Melayu berusia 26 tahun itu adalah pelajar sekolah swasta manakala wanita Melayu kedua, 24 tahun, bekerja sebagai promoter pil langsing.
Jika didapati bersalah, mereka boleh dihukum penjara sekurang-kurangnya lima tahun.
Dalam operasi sekitar 2.30 petang pula, pegawai CNB juga berjaya memberkas seorang lelaki Cina berusia 41 tahun di pusat membeli-belah Midland Plaza kerana disyaki mengambil dadah.
Setelah diperiksa, CNB menjumpai satu paket dadah Ketamine, pil Ecstasy dan dua paket ganja bersamanya.
Dia merupakan pengarah syarikat peralatan kesihatan.
Sebanyak 21 pil Ecstasy juga berjaya dirampas dalam serbuan susulan di flatnya di Blok 448 Pasir Ris Drive 6.
Jika bersalah, dia boleh dihukum penjara sekurang-kurangnya lima tahun dan sebat lima kali
CNB juga berjaya memberkas tiga lagi pengedar - dua wanita dan seorang lelaki - dalam operasi di Holland Village sekitar 7.30 malam. |

JUST as a man was about to rape his young niece, his mobile phone rang and he stopped to answer the call.
The 12-year-old girl quickly pulled up her tracksuit trousers and told him she wanted to go home. He agreed and took her home in a taxi, but said he would take her out again the following Saturday.

The girl lives with her grandmother.
She was unnerved by the near rape at Marina Promenade on the night of Jan 11 last year. The next day, at school, she confided in a friend and asked if she could stay with her, because she was afraid of her uncle.
Five days later, her grandmother went to the school to look for her. When a school staff member asked the girl why she had run away from home, the child broke down and told her what had happened. A police report was made then.
On Jan 11 last year, when the 36-year-old uncle, a former cleaner, took her out, his excuse was that he was going to take her to see her stepfather, who owed money to her grandmother.
From her school, he took her to a coffee shop in Tanglin Halt Road, where he had drinks with his friends.
Though he took her home at about 8.30pm, he persuaded her grandmother, who is 63, to let the child go out with him again later.
At Marina Promenade, they sat on a bench, and he suddenly kissed her, started to undress her and asked for sex.
She tried to protect herself, but he forcefully pulled her trousers down. Just then, his mobile phone rang and the girl quickly got dressed.
Yesterday, he was packed off to prison for 5 1/2 years and ordered to be given four strokes of the cane after he admitted trying to rape her.
Lawyer Gurdaib Singh said his client, a divorcee with five children, deeply regretted what had happened.
The incident had also driven a wedge between the man's mother and the girl's grandmother, who are sisters. They have not seen or spoken to each other since.
But District Judge Jasvender Kaur told the accused that the matter was made worse because he had planned to rape the girl.
However, she said she had taken into account the fact that he had pleaded guilty and thus saved the girl the ordeal of having to relive the incident from the witness box.
The man had been released from jail in 2002 after serving time for a drug offence. |

Portugal beat England on penalties
LISBON (Portugal) - Portugal reached the semi-finals of Euro 2004 on Thursday, defeating England 6-5 on penalties with the match tied 2-2 after 30 minutes of extra time before a sellout crowd at the Stadium of Light.
Michael Owen finally regained his goal-scoring touch to give England a 1-0 lead after just three minutes but Portuguese substitute Helder Postiga, the replacement for Luis Figo in the 75th minute, headed an equaliser seven minutes from the end of 90 minutes to send the match into extra-time.

England thought it had scored the winner in the final minute of normal time when Owen headed against the crossbar from a Beckham free kick and Sol Campbell forced the rebound over the line.
However, Swiss referee Urs Meier disallowed the goal for a foul on Portuguese goalkeeper Alexandre Ricardo.
Rui Costa fired an 18-metre strike into the roof of the net in the 20th minute of extra time but Frank Lampard scored from close range five minutes later to make it 2-2.
In the penalty shootout, David Beckham blasted his spot kick into the crowd. Deco, Simao, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nuno Maniche and Helder Postiga all scored for the Portuguese but England goalkeeper David James saved from the third Portuguese taker Rui Costa.
Owen, Lampard, John Terry, Owen Hargeaves and Ashley Cole all netted for England.
Darius Vassell then had his shot saved by Ricardo.
