Vivek's stunning performance in 'Shootout in New York'
IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, May 29, 2007]
Just after the rocking premiere show of producer Sanjay Gupta's "Shootout At Lokhandwala" our very own Vivek Oberoi, the reel life Maya Dolas, had to rush to the airport to catch a flight, & flew down to New York for a performance at the Bollywood Award function.
He had no time to savor the success and applause for his critically acclaimed performance as Maya Dolas. The performance in New York was aptly titled 'Shootout in New York'
For the first time he performed on stage in the Big Apple with the medley of his all films including the forthcoming "Fool And Final" which is yet to release and got a overwhelmed response from the audience.
The auditorium was packed up and everybody was overjoyed to see their favorite star on stage. The songs were choreographed by the choreographer duo Pappu-Mallu and the whole dance sequence was for 15minutes. For this award ceremony designer Punit Singh designed his outfit in which Vivek was looking stunning.
Shootout At Lokhandwala got the great response from everywhere. At the premier show people were gone crazy to see Vivek and cheered for him when they saw him entering the hall. Shootout got 85% opening, the highest opening all over India for this year and already created a magic through the people of India.
It shows that how much popularity Vivek has in his fans and this film proves again his capacity as a matured actor. After Omkara this is his third movie where he played a gangster and proved his mettle in a realistic gangster role. |

Mrinalini is Emraan's 'Maahiya'
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, May 30, 2007]
While the To Phir Aao number from Awarapan is creating waves already, quite clearly the Annie-rendered Maahiya has emerged as the hot favourite among Bollywood buffs.
The wait for the video of Maahiya is on with bated breath but we can exclusively reveal that it has reportedly been picturised not on Shriya Saran, but on the sizzling 27-year old model Mrinalini Sharma, who plays Emraan's contemporary love interest in Awarapan.
While Awarapan marks Mrinalini's feature film debut, many will remember that she played the sexy nightclub girl opposite Ajay Devgan in the song Aao Ji Babu in Prakash Jha's Apaharan.
Reported earlier, so impressed is Mahesh Bhatt with Mrinalini that he is said to have snapped her up for a three-film deal for the Bhatt camp.
Shaad Randhawa fooled on the sets of AWARAPAN Dara Singh's handsome nephew, Shaad Randhawa has emerged a Mohit Suri favourite. After casting him in his previous film, Woh Lamhe, Mohit has repeated Shaad in a strong supporting role in his forthcoming Awarapan, which hits cinemas on June 29.
Not many know however that Shaad was at the receiving end of everyone's pranks on the sets of Awarapan. It seems Shaad was asked to learn some kung fu moves while shooting for the Tera Mera Rishta remix video in Bangkok. After rigorously practicing for a whole day, he realised that he was made a fool of by choreographer Remo, Mohit and Emraan Hashmi, because kung fu wasn't required for the video!
This is only the tip of the iceberg. Poor Shaad was fooled a second time when he was made to climb high on a rope and practice swinging on it! He was told by action master Abbas Ali Moghul in a pre-climax action scene that he would have to come crashing through a huge window on the set. After he struggled for an hour he was told that it was a prank much to his dismay! When asked, director Mohit Suri laughs, "Shaad is a sincere actor and takes his work rather seriously. This trait leaves him vulnerable to such pranks. I don't think he'll fall prey to our mischief again!" |

This matter was thus concluded approximately 11 months ago, and we (Yash Raj Films) are surprised that Daler Mehendi is bringing this matter up now. |

Surprise - Sameera missing in the promotional video of FNF
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, May 31, 2007]
Even though there are only two leading ladies in tomorrow's release FOOL N FINAL, the promotional video for the film doesn't feature her. Surprising because an entire cast of the film has participated in this well crafted never-seen-before-kind of music video.
Comprising of not just the principal star cast of Sunny Deol, Shahid Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi and Ayesha Takia, the video of 'Masti Remix' features even the likes of Arbaaz Khan, Gulshan Grover, Chunky Panday, Paresh Rawal, Johfney Lever and guess what, even Suresh Menon and Vijay Raaz.
This is the reason why it is doubly surprising to see Sameera missing from the action since she would have only added on the glamour quotient of the video.
Other notable omission from the music video is that of Jackie Shroff, though that hasn't raised many eyebrows since traditionally Jackie has hardly been seen in any music video before as well. |

"I would have preferred PIRATES over THE TRAIN" - Raksha Mistry
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, May 31, 2007]
Known for not mincing any words and speaking her heart and mind out, Raksha Mistry, co-director of THE TRAIN has a shocking, yet hilarious statement to make.
She says that if THE TRAIN would have released on the same day as PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN - AT WORLD'S END, she would have preferred to stand in queue for the latter.
Laughs Raksha, "Seriously, don't think that I am kidding! Such has been the craze of PIRATES series for me that I can't miss it for anything in the world, even if it means putting my own film at the second position!"
But why? "It's simple. Johny Depp is a darling and it is impossible to swap him for anything else. At the end of the day, I am more curious to see what he has to offer in the latest edition of PIRATES than watching THE TRAIN, which I must have anyways watched a zillion times by now", she chuckles!
While PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN - AT WORLD'S END releases tomorrow, THE TRAIN comes a week later at the theaters. |

"I have never denied my film being ATHADU remake" - Sangeeth Sivan
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, May 31, 2007]
"I am amused by the reports which say that I am not allowing the news to leak out that my film is a remake of ATHADU", says Sangeeth Sivan who has almost wrapped up the shoot of his yet untitled film which stars Nana Patekar and Bobby Deol in the lead.
"We have bought the rights of the film and it is in fact an honor to be associated with a great film like ATHADU. I have never ever denied this fact", says Sangeeth who would be returning to the action genre after around a decade since he made his Bollywood debut with Sunny Deol starrer ZOR.
For starters, ATHADU is the name of a Telegu blockbuster which made Mahesh Babu a household name. "Do you know the kind of craze Mahesh Babu became after the film released?" he questions.
"Expect fireworks all around as Nana and Bobby share the frames. Believe me, the kind of chemistry that the two of them have demonstrated on the screen is mind blowing. I am sure lovers of commercial masala entertainers would love the film", he concludes excitedly. |

Box office analysis
Exclusive By Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, May 31, 2007]
First weekend performance of latest release
What Sanjay Gupta couldn't achieve with his last directorial outing ZINDA, he did it for his director Apoorva Lakhia in SHOOT OUT AT LOKHANDWALA! Tremendous publicity combined with using all media forums to create a massive hype resulted in SOAL taking the best opening of the year at the box office. Yes, best! Curiosity to watch the film increased exponentially as the Friday approached closer and by the time the gates opened for the first show of the film, there was a stampede situation outside both the multiplexes and the single screens!
To add to all the fun, the film has been appreciated by the masses in entirety while class audience is also showing keen interest in the film, hence ensuring that the film gets past the safety mark in one week flat. As of now the film is en route to be a massive success! Apoorva has turned third time lucky, and how! By the end of first week, the film should collect the double of what his first two films, MUMBAI SE AAYA MERA DOST and EK AJNABEE earned in their first week.
Happiest of all is bound to be Vivek Oberoi who has earned both accolades both from the junta and the critics. He has suited the part of the main villain in the film and has done justice to the heavily publicized Dutt v/s Oberoi clash!
It won't be wrong to say that SOAL wave impacted CHEENI KUM to a good degree! In normal circumstances without a major competition like SOAL, CHEENI KUM would have taken a good start at the box office. But it wasn't the case to be as the film saw a below average opening, though it remained stable over the weekend. It is highly expected that once the SOAL euphoria settles down, the film would be able to find its audience (mainly gentry) and help it cross the safety mark in around 2-3 weeks. Still, it is not a rosy road ahead since big competition lies in the form of FOOL N FINAL, PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN - AT WORLD'S END and SHREK 3. But more about that later!
CHEENI KUM could have been a superb film if only if was shorter by at least 30 minutes and not dragged unnecessarily in the second half. This is the reason why word of mouth too ranges from being good to just-about-ok, hence threatening to create a dent in the film's business. Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu have come up with superb acts though Paresh Rawal [surprisingly] has been out of color!
Last week's movies
Director Anurag Singh must be one disheartened man. He made a good first film RAQEEB but call it poor promotion, general lack of awareness and audience looking forward to the big Friday bringing to them SOAL and CHEENI KUM that the film got a cold shoulder. RAQEEB failed to taken even a decent opening and just didn't show any sign of a jump even though those select few who watched the film gave it a Thumbs Up.
In the end, the film dragged on to just a 1 crore mark with miserable collections from across the country. Both Delhi and Mumbai hardly managed to cross the 10 lakhs mark which tells the tale! A disappointing box office performance for a decent film, hence proving once again that a) 'intelligent' promotion is extremely vital to a film's fortunes and b) one can never predict what an audience is looking for.
Released at just about 150 theaters, EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL held on well for an entire week to cross the 1.5 crore mark. The film was quite good in Mumbai where it earned in excess of 60 lakhs though Delhi was just about ok with only 12 lakhs coming in. Delhi NCR though brought in revenues in the same range.
Surprisingly the film wasn't continues in the number of shows it was running in the first week with the print count coming considerably down, at least at the cities. Still, this small film has earned enough for itself to be called at least coverage at the box office. Abhay Deol gets a second success to his name after HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD. while director Sanjay Khanduri makes a good start to his career with his debut film doing decent at the box office.
From the past
After TRRP, METRO has turned out to be second film in quick succession that has shrug past all the claims of being called as a non-starter/flop/box office disaster and instead proved to be a HIT at the box office. The film has turned out to be a very good success at the box office as it has created history by showing a negligible drop (~20%) even as it moved from 1st to 2nd week. Success of this Anurag Basu film is special since it retained itself at such collections while running at around 200 screens.
After a 6 crore first week, the film has earned 5 crore more to cross the 11 crore mark and hence qualifying as a hit. The film has held up well with Mumbai bringing in another 1.5 crore while Delhi sticking around the 60 lakhs mark. Delhi NCR too has held up amazingly well with 45 lakhs more coming in hence bringing cheers for the entire ensemble cast of the film. The way METRO is running at the theaters, it won't be far away from being a massive success if it holds on to similar collections for a week or two.
GOOD BOY BAD BOY did fall in its second week but to it's good luck, the drop wasn't that disastrous that it would be termed as a crash. Agreed that the film hardly had 5 crores to boast at the end of week 1 but another 2 crore odd coming in second week meant that the film would end up as at least a coverage with near 7 crore collections. It is not expected that the film would earn anything substantial from this point on but still call it the pull of Emraan Hashmi that he has managed at least a face saving box office outing for his film.
Falling by way less than industry standard of 50% every week since its release 4 weeks back, TA RA RUM PUM has now qualified itself as a clean hit in spite of detractors still trying to tag it otherwise. For a film to be called as a flop at the end of show 1, it is no mean achievement to net near to 35 crore in 4 weeks time.
Showing its power of having long legs, the film fell by just 30% last week and got home another 3.5 crore to keep the money flowing in. With Mumbai hardly showing a fall (1 crore to 80 lakhs) and Delhi too holding up well at 40 lakhs, the film has now made profits for all.
Meanwhile BHEJA FRY continues to surprise even it's makers as it refuses to budge in spite of all the competition around it. The film fell by just 20% last week and got home another 40 lakhs to take its total past 7.5 crores! Commendable. A superhit, BHEJA FRY by Sagar Bellary is yet another clean hit for independent film makers after KHOSLA KA KHOSLA.
In the future
FOOL N FINAL is the sole notable Hindi release this weekend though there is huge competition in the form of PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN - AT WORLD'S END and to an extent SHREK 3. Still, an immense publicity drive by Firoz Nadiadwala combined with exciting promos mean that the film should take a good start [50-70%] at the box office. |

Mukesh Bhatt fathers AWARAPAN unit!
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, May 31, 2007]
While shooting Awarapan in a location called 'Ancient City' in Bangkok, the entire unit of the film became a victim of a contagious viral infection.
It was courtesy of director Mohit Suri, who turned sick first and passed on the virus to the rest of the unit! Despite that, shooting never came to a standstill but their condition was becoming worse by the day. The unit was lucky to have a father in producer Mukesh Bhatt who flew down from Mumbai immediately on hearing the news.
Remarks Suri, "Yes, it's true that we all caught an infection. I don't know what would have happened had it not been for Mukesh ji who came down to Bangkok with a huge bunch of medicines for the entire unit." |

OSCAR academy invites Metro screenplay for its permanent library
IndiaGlitz [Friday, June 01, 2007]
It's the world most old and comprehensive library on films, the Library of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Science, the Margaret Herrick Library. And it has new occupant, the screenplay of the recently released UTV film Life in a Metro directed Anurag Basu who also written the screenplay of the film, has been invited by the Motion Picture Academy's prestigious library to be part of the it's sprawling script collection.
Metro will be one amongst masterpieces like Finding Nemo, Million Dollar Baby and The Passion of the Christ that have got this honour.
This is another leg up for Indian films that have not stopped making headlines across the globe for it's content, style of films, but this is the first time a small no star cast Indian commercial film would be part of the acclaimed collection. Indian cinema this year is giving the green signal to new, fresh talent & concepts, like it has never done before. Lines between mainstream and so-called alternative don't exist anymore.
This is definitely the new wave of Indian films. Ram Mirchandani, Senior VP-Creative and Projects, UTV Motion Pictures says that "This is the changing phase of Indian cinema, whether its iffy, Cannes, Toronto film festival Indian films are a vital part of it. Especially recently there has been a growth in niche low budget, good scripted films like Khosla Ka Ghosla, Bheja Fry and Metro that have created it's own space in the sun".
Evermore special for Life in a...Metro as it is not really a typical Bollywood big budget-featuring blockbuster stars that have traditionally been acclaimed abroad. In fact it's a film completely shot in regular day-to-day backdrop! The selection of Metro for the academy library has opened inspirational doors to all young professionals and reassures us that the script rules.
The library has collections of more than 32,000 books; 1,800 periodical titles; 60,000 screenplays; lobby cards, over 8 million photographs; over 300 manuscript and other special collections relating to prominent industry individuals, studios and organizations; sheet music, music scores and sound recordings; production and costume sketches; artifacts; and oral histories. |
