PREMIER LEAGUE NEWS
Sir Alex boycotts TV interviews in kick-off protest
By Soccernet staff
March 16, 2009
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly refused to give television interviews to Sky Sports before or after Saturday's crushing 4-1 defeat to Liverpool in protest at the kick-off time.
Liverpool had an extra day to prepare for the crucial match at Old Trafford, which kicked off at 12.45pm on Saturday, having played Real Madrid on Tuesday evening. But United did not play Inter Milan in their Champions League tie until Wednesday evening, meaning Rafa Benitez's side were presented with extra recovery time.
The defeat was United's heaviest on home soil since Queens Park Rangers handed out a 4-1 thrashing on New Year's Day in 1992.
Sir Alex Ferguson is no stranger to boycotting television station, having not spoken to the BBC since 2004 following a documentary which investigated his son Jason's business dealings as a football agent.
The match was always likely to have a lunchtime kick-off due to the intense rivalry of the two teams involved, though it is thought Sir Alex wanted the game to be played on Sunday to give them an extra 24 hours recovery time.
In 2006-07, the match was played on a Sunday following a round of Champions League games. On that occasion United had played FC Copenhagen on the Tuesday with Liverpool playing Bordeaux on the Wednesday.
When Ferguson did speak, he remarkably claimed United were the better side.
"It is a hard one to take because I felt we were the better team," he said. "That is not reflected in the scoreline and quite rightly, when you win 4-1 you get all the plaudits. I can't deny that."

Man Utd's weaknesses found out? So sez Benitez. Read....
It was interesting to read about Benitez's post-mortem analysis and how he prepared Liv'pool tactically. Apparently, he says that he finds 2-3 of Man Utd players had weaknesses that he exploited to advantage. One was the defense and alluded to Vidic and another defender as well. Vidic tends to be slower, a bit immobile and, thus, at a disadvantage against fast footballer. Another was to cut down the incisive pinpoint passing down the channels which led to Carrick underperforming, And the tight marking and longer ball holding slowed down United's fast breaks and counter attacks.
I quote the rest of his pronouncement:
QUOTE
"Maybe this is a message for the rest of the Premier League that they can be beaten here," said Benitez.
"United have weaknesses. They have a lot of quality in attack. They are strong in defence because they have plenty of possession.
"But when they don't have the ball and you move the ball quickly and play behind the defenders you know you can beat them."
END QUOTE.
Another reviewer pointed to the 4-4-2 system used and its weakness in United's case, QUOTED:
"Since Berbatov arrived at Old Trafford Ferguson reverted back to 4-4-2 in instead of the fluid 4-3-3 his team had thrived on for the last two seasons. Even with the absence of the Bulgarian forward, Sir Alex has prevailed with this formation, which is good a majority of the time.
But when the midfield is starved of possession梐s happened on Saturday梩he team is devoid of ideas and very predictable. That is the main difference between this season and last梡redictability"
HOWEVER, he also said:
"Since the defence was breached so easily four times on Saturday, United should be making attack the best form of defence and attack with such intensity and creative that all teams who United come up against will not be able live with United. With attacking options at their disposal it is almost criminal to hinder the players in this way"
SO, given that, what would you fans recommend in United's game? Any change? Any player to come in the first team instead? And what is really missing, what with the number of 1-0s and close games, this season?
After all, there were lessons learned after this 1-4 disaster ! |
