Russia beat U.S. 3-2 to reach Fed Cup final
BOSTON, July 15 (Reuters) - Russia's Nadia Petrova and ElenaVesnina beat Venus Williams and Lisa Raymond in doubles to give Russia a 3-2 win over the United States in their Fed Cup semi-final on Sunday in Stowe, Vermont.
Petrova, returning to the court after saving Russia from elimination in Sunday's second singles, and Vesnina registered a7-5 7-6 victory, claiming the second-set tiebreaker 7-1, to lift Russia into the Fed Cup final against Italy.
Italy also needed a victory in the doubles on Sunday to defeat visiting France in their semi-final.
Earlier, Williams had given the U.S. team a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five competition by defeating Anna Chakvetadze 6-1 6-4in the day's opening singles match for her second win of the tie.
U.S. Captain Zina Garrison decided to call on Williams to join top-ranked doubles players Raymond for the doubles after Petrova routed 41st-ranked Meilen Tu 6-1 6-2 in the second singles to knot the tie at 2-2. Williams, who last week won her fourth Wimbledon singles crown, replaced Vania King in the doubles.
Tu, a late addition to the squad in place of injured Serena Williams made her Fed Cup debut when she replaced King in Sunday's second singles.
King had been beaten on Saturday by Chakvetadze in the opening singles match of the tie.

Tennis / FED Cup: Rasmussen claims stage win and yellow jersey
TIGNES: Denmark抯 Michael Rasmussen, of the Rabobank team, won the eighth stage of the Tour de France yesterday, a 165km run from Le Grand-Bornand to Tignes and also took charge of the yellow jersey.
German race debutant Linus Gerdemann lost the race lead but stayed in second place overall, 43sec behind the Dane.
However, that was by the far the least dramatic of the day抯 events.
On the second of three days in the Alps the race sprang into life on the day抯 climb to the first summit finish, on which yellow jersey favourites Alexandre Vinokourov and Andreas Kloden lost more time to their rivals.
The Astana team pair, riding with injuries picked up on Thursday抯 fifth stage, could do nothing when French champion Christophe Moreau launched the first of a series of attacks late on the 18km climb to the summit.
Earlier in the stage Michael Rogers, of Gerdemann抯 T-Mobile team, was in the virtual race lead when he crashed out of the race.
Rogers had been in contention for a first stage win, although that would have been a hard ask given the nearby presence of two-time King of the Mountains Rasmussen, among the seven stage leaders who had over three minutes of a lead on Gerdemann and the main peloton.
The skinny Dane took command on the 19.9km climb to the summit of the Cormet de Roselend after his Rabobank team had helped up the pace.
Then, with 18km to go to the summit finish in Tignes, Rasmussen attacked the only rider who had managed to stay on his wheel - Anonio Colom of the Astana team.
Further on, as Rasmussen raced on solo, an attack by Moreau signalled the first skirmish in the battle for the yellow jersey.
His move forced Australian Cadel Evans into action, but the only Astana rider able to follow was Andrey Kashechkin. |
