Arsenal Steal Late Point From Everton Tie
The following ingredients are essential if you want to create a recipe for either a title challenge; or a Champions League place: luck; a winning mentality; and creation and inventiveness in front of goal. These are the things that are serving teams like Aston Villa so well, and it is something that Arsenal are lacking.
They've gone through the motions in recent games. Some would claim it is a sign of a championship-winning side to be grinding out results, but the manner in which Arsenal have been playing suggests otherwise.
If manager Arsene Wenger wants to remedy the situation then a flair playmaking attack-minded midfielder such as Andrei Arshavin must be considered an essential acquisition.
It was clear that the Gunners were going to be in for a tough haul, as Everton welcomed back Marouane Fellaini; a key midfield battler. Goodison is also a tricky arena.
The game started in a particularly awful manner. There were few midfield battles and neither side seemed intent on keeping hold of the ball. It was a motif that was set to dog the whole game for some players, as Arsenal's Abu Diaby failed to complete the simplest of passes thoughout the game, and relinquished possession all too easily.
As both teams began to settle down, Everton took a hold of affairs and found much joy down the wide areas. Tony Hibbert's overlap was effective down the right, and he found countless corners as a result, and South African international Stephen Pienaar found joy down the left. The resultent corners though bore little fruit.
Fellaini was on good form in the first half, and it is testament to his ability to mop up play as Arsenal seldon penetrated the opposition half.
The fact that there were no shots on target, from either side, summed up the entertainment value of the opening 45 minutes.
Arsenal began the second half in slightly better spirits. Samir Nasri - who had been probing forward down the left flank during the latter stages of the first half - and his link up play forced Everton into action. Hibbert though was equal to his 49th minute effort.
Everton broke the deadlock on the hour mark. And, despite having no recognised strikers on the pitch, Australian international Tim Cahill again proved how much of a nuisance he can be. Leighton Baines - who surely must be pushing for an international call-up such is the strength of his recent form - crossed in from the left and Tim Cahill cut a stereotypical header into Manuel Almunia's net. It was his 100th career league goal.
Arsenal never looked like equalising. They were out of sorts, out of ideas, and there was very little creation to note of. However, Dutch forward Robin van Persie - who has saved the club's skin on more than one occasion this season - popped up to level the scoreline.
Maligned Frenchman Diaby played in a long ranging cross-field pass and van Persie lashed the ball home in splendid fashion. It was a youtubetastic strike, but Arsenal still slipped four points off of fourth place.
