Liverpool to Make Offer for Arsenal Winger Theo Walcott as Gunners Contract Talks Stall
Anfield boss expresses interest in Emirates Stadium wide-man.
Liverpool are reportedly readying an opening offer for Arsenal winger Theo Walcott. The England international has just a year to run on his current contract and with talks said to have stalled between the winger and his North London club a number of prospective suitors are said to be considering registering bids for the 23 year old.
Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers is looking to improve his wide attacking options after both Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson struggled to impress in their debut seasons at the Merseyside club. The former Swansea City boss will look to make an offer for the Arsenal man as he sets about plans to improve a squad that only managed an eighth place finish last season.
Arsene Wenger has seen captain Robin Van Persie publicly state his intention to leave the Emirates Stadium and may see Walcott push for an exit as well. If Liverpool are to succeed in luring the England international to Merseyside they will have to match his wage demands, demands that the Gunners board seem reticent to agree to.
Though Liverpool boss Rodgers is thought to be operating on a smaller budget than that offered to previous incumbent Kenny Dalglish, who spent £120m on new players during his brief second spell as boss, the 39 year old has been promised significant sums to invest in players.
Rodgers failed in his attempts to lure Gylfi Sigurdsson, who opted instead to move to Tottenham, but still has a number of targets in mind and will hope that the promise of a possibility of a new era of success at Liverpool could help to persuade Theo Walcott to consider a move to a side who does not have Champions League football to offer the former Southampton man this coming season. |
