Tennis: Triumphant return by Haas
WASHINGTON: Tommy Haas was triumphant in his first match since a torn stomach muscle forced him to withdraw from Wimbledon, beating Alejandro Falla 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday at the ATP Washington Classic.
The German second seed pulled out of Wimbledon before a fourth-round match against Swiss World No 1 Roger Federer but was rarely in jeopardy in his comeback, advancing to face American Michael Russell in the third round.
"It felt fine," Haas said. "I felt the stomach a little bit but not to the point where I couldn抰 serve. The serve was the big factor at Wimbledon that destroyed my stomach muscle."
Haas, who lost his only prior meeting with Falla in March at Miami, broke the Colombian in the eighth game of the first set and three times in the second set for the victory.
"It was a test," Haas said. "Overall I抦 pretty pleased. I was a step slow but that will come back."
Ninth-ranked Haas, 27-8 on the year, won his 398th career ATP match to open a quest for his 12th career title and second this year, having beaten Washington top seed Andy Roddick in February抯 Memphis final.
Otherwise, it was a day of upsets at the US$600,000 US Open tune-up event, with Sweden抯 Thomas Johansson ousting defending champion and fourth seed Arnaud Clement of France 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Clement, playing after a right-side muscle tear that had kept him off the court 10 days, overpowered the 2002 Australian Open winner to take the first set in 30 minutes but Johansson抯 fightback was too much.
"After 6-1, I thought maybe I could win this match," Clement said. "Then he played a little better and I was a little tight. He was just better than me the last two sets."
US novice John Isner, in only his second ATP event, fired 30 aces to beat German eighth seed Benjamin Becker 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). One day after ousting Britain抯 Tim Henman, the 22-year-old ATP hard-court debutante sparkled again.
"It was awesome. This is unbelievable. It really is a dream come true," said Isner, 22, who will next face US qualifier Wayne Odesnik, who ousted Argentina抯 Juan Martin Del Potro 3-6 7-6 (12-10), 6-3.
German Michael Berrer ousted US sixth seed Mardy Fish 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, in the other upset. Fish, slowed by left knee tendinitis, said he needs a month抯 rest but must prepare for the US Open.
"I抎 be lying to you if I said it was a good idea to play this tournament," Fish said. "It probably would have been a better idea to stay home." |

Tennis: Sania leads way into Cincinnati q-finals
Yuan Meng of China beat Australian Casey Dellacqua 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the second
round on Wednesday.
CINCINNATI: Third seed Sania Mirza of India led the way into the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati International hard court tournament on Wednesday with a straight sets win over Varvara Lepchenko.
Sania downed her opponent from Uzbekistan 6-2, 6-2 to reach the last eight for the third straight year.
Sania has been working her way back into shape after missing two and a half months earlier this season due to knee surgery.
Wednesday抯 victory marked the first time she has put together back-to-back victories since February. She now awaits the winner of the second-round match between ninth seed Jill Craybas of the United States and Belarussion Olga Govortsova.
Top-seeded Russian Anna Chakvetadze also reached the quarter-finals, defeating Romanian qualifier Anda Perianu 6-4, 6-3.
Anda had recorded her first WTA Tour match win on Tuesday when she beat Melinda Czink of Hungary in the first round. But she couldn抰 stop World No 8 Anna, who has won titles in Hobart and s扝ertogenbosch already this season.
The only other seeded player in action, No 7 Akiko Morigami of Japan also had an easy second-round match.
A finalist here in 2005, Akiko dispatched German teenager Angelique Kerber 6-2, 6-2.
In other second-round action, American Lilia Osterloh topped Georgian qualifier Anna Tatishvili 7-5, 6-1, while in the first round China抯 Yuan Meng defeated Australian Casey Dellacqua 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 |
