La Liga - Helguera blasts Real over treatment Eurosport - Fri, 07 Mar 12:19:00 2008
Valencia defender Ivan Helguera has hit out at the way he was treated by the Real Madrid hierarchy during his last season at the club.
Helguera spent eight years at the reigning Spanish champions, between 1999 and 2007, before moving to Los Che in the summer. In thattime he won three Liga titles and two Champions Leagues.
However,Helguera believes that he was forced out during his final season at theSantiago Bernabeu by new president Ramon Calderon and sporting directorPredrag Mijatovic.
The 32-year-old former Spain internationalsaid: "They took away my squad number and made my life impossible bytelling me that I would play again. They said that I would never wearthe Real Madrid shirt again. They wanted me to leave as quickly aspossible.
"It was not fair after I had spent eight years at the club and helped the team win everything.
"I was struggling against things that were not to do with football."
Calderonbecame the full-time replacement for previous president FlorentinoPerez after winning club elections in July 2006, and it soon becameclear that, despite making 23 appearances in the league-winning season,he saw no place for Helguera at the club
"I just did not wantto continue fighting against people that are not part of Real Madrid,"the former Roma and Espanyol continued.
"For me, they arepeople that are at Real Madrid, but they are not what it stands for, they are not people that go to the games or people that feel deeply, like me, about Madrid.
"These are people that look at other things and I did not want to stay and continue going against them, I just wanted to play." |

09/03/2008 20:51 Valencia Draw After Depor Fight Back Valencia 2 - 2 Deportivo La Coru馻
Aftertaking a commanding two goal lead, Valencia were twice punished byDeportivo shortly before the interval, resulting in a share of thespoils...
Inthe aftermath of more than one decisive moment in the Spanish Ligarace, Valencia-Depor gained a reputation for being a spicy occasionwith no small amount of surprise to it.
Tonight's match at theMestalla proved little different, as Los Che first took and thensquandered a two-goal lead against a Deportivo outfit dead set onproving its doubters wrong.
Indeed, after a minute's silence forETA victim Isa韆s Carrasco, Depor started brightly, with Colocciniheading wide early on and Lafita concluding an admittedly well-workedmove with a rathed ballooned finish.
The referee, DelgadoFerreira, ensured that he'd be in the headlines the next day afterdeclining to award Valencia a penalty for what seemed to be a handballby Filipe ten minutes in, but in any case, Los Che were now rampant andduly carved out a lead.
Arizmendi teed up Villa through the middle, with El Guaje's resultant play somewhat fortunately reaching Mata, who squeezed the ball goalwards past Aouate from close range.
Minutes later, Villa made it 2-0 after heading home from another Arizmendi cross, with Aouate and Lopo left scratching their heads.
Valenciahad really hit stride by this point, particularly in the midfield, butthat served only to make it more surprising when Depor pulled one back.
36 minutes in, Sergio playeda cross-cum-shot across goal, but one that needed no interference tohit the back of the net, with Hildebrand foxed by its trajectory andunable to prevent the comeback from starting.
Then, just before half time, Xisco teed up Willhelmsson, who in turn played a fantastic through ball to Angel Lafita. The on-loan Zaragoza man smashed a thunderbolt past Hildebrand, and it was game on.
Thesecond half began with Depor once again starting strongly, but actionquickly moved up to the other end, where Villa felt himself fouled onthe edge of the area. Ferreira waved away his protests - and those ofan increasingly animated Ronald Koeman, too.
Depor had the best of the midfield play by this time, resulting in a series of long range efforts, albeit with limited success.
Koemanknew that the game was slipping away from his sides, so off cameMiguel, Sunny and finally SIlva for Joaquin, Vicente and Edu, whichtipped the balance somewhat in the hosts' favour, albeit not enough tofind a goal.
And thus a rather sedate second period drew to aclose, with Valencia ending the evening level on points with Getafe on36th, securing 9th place, while Deportivo moved one further spot awayfrom relegation by finishing up 16th on 31. |

Koeman: Depor Draw Typical Of Us :@
Valencia coach Ronald Koeman spoke out with frustration after his side's 2-2 draw at home to Deportivo...
The Galicians lookeddead and buried after Los Che carved out an early, two-goal lead, onlyfor Valencia to succumb to a pair of Depor goals just before theinterval.
"This match was a reflection of how we are," he told Marca after the game.
"Wewere in full ccontrol of the match, but our opponents, who didn'treally press much, were able to score against us with ease.
"They managed those two goals in eight minutes, and then we controlled the game; however, we were unable to create anything."
Whenquizzed on his side's floundering season, wherein the Copa del Rey istheir only chance of silverware, he added, "We still have a chance tomake the UEFA Cup."

Valencia move for Espanyol pair Kameni, Zabaleta
tribalfootball.com - March 11, 2008
Valencia are chasing Espanyol goalkeeper Carlos Kameni.
Los Che chief Miguel Angel Ruiz has been in talks with Espanyol about the Cameroon international for two months. But Valencia must make a concrete move in the next 24 hours, says AS, with Tottenham in advanced negotiations for the keeper.
Along with Kameni, Valencia are also following his Espanyol teammate Pablo Zabaleta, the midfielder. |

Shake up at the top at troubled Valencia
Written by: AFP
The president and main shareholder of troubled Spanish club Valencia, Juan Solar, has resigned, Spanish media reported Wednesday.
MADRID (AFP) - The president and main shareholder of troubled Spanish club Valencia, Juan Solar, said Wednesday he had resigned due to health reasons.
He told a news conference that an undisclosed illness prevented him from dedicating to the job "the time that Valencia and its project requires."
Valencia vice-president Agustin Morera replaced Solar as the president of the 2002 and 2004 Spanish champions.
The club has not won any titles since Solar became president in October 2004 despite the millions of euros he spent on new players and coaches.
He ackowledged that mistakes had been made but said "they were never intentional and were only made by thinking what would be good for Valencia at the moment."
Solar said he would, as the club's main shareholder, continue to work to ensure that projects which have already begun, such as work on a new stadium, would become reality.
Valencia were knocked out of the Champions League in the first round and are struggling in ninth in the Spanish league, 26 points behind leaders Real Madrid.
Only teams which end in the top six places in the Spanish league will qualify for European championships.
Coach Quique Sanchez Flores was sacked due to a poor start in the Champions League.
His replacement Ronald Koeman then angered many fans with his decision to sideline Spanish internationals Santi Canizares, Miguel Angel Angulo and David Albelda.
Earlier this month Abelda, a former Valencia captain, lost his legal action to try and overturn Valencia's decision to terminate his contract. |

Valencia president Soler steps down for health reasons
MADRID, March 12 (Reuters) - Valencia president Juan Soler has stepped down for health reasons after four seasons in charge of the Primera Liga club.
"My decision is irrevocable and the reason for it is my health," Soler told a news conference on Wednesday. "I can no longer dedicate the time that Valencia requires."
Although he has decided to step down as president, Soler made it clear that he would remain the club's majority shareholder.
Soler's decision comes at a time when the club is engulfed in crisis both on and off the field.
At the end of October Soler made the decision to sack coach Quique Sanchez Flores and appoint Ronald Koeman with the club in fourth position in the league, just four points behind leaders Real Madrid.
Since Koeman took charge, Valencia have won just three of their 16 league matches and have dropped to 10th place in the table and are 26 points behind leaders Real.
The club has also become embroiled in a series of controversies which have tarnished its reputation and made it a source of ridicule in the Spanish media.
Soler backed the Dutchman in his decision to sideline experienced players David Albelda, Santiago Canizares and Miguel Angel Angulo from the first team.
He recently had to appear in court to justify his decision after Albelda accused the club of preventing him from exercising his profession.
"Like any human I've made mistakes, but they weren't intentional," said Soler. "They were designed to improve the club."
Soler said that vice-president Agustin Morera would take his place as head of the club. (Reporting by Simon Baskett; editing by Miles Evans) |
