Bridget Jones Diary (Audiobook)

Amazon.com Reviews
In the course of the year recorded in Bridget Jones's Diary, Bridget confides her hopes, her dreams, and her monstrously fluctuating poundage, not to mention her consumption of 5277 cigarettes and "Fat units 3457 (approx.) (hideous in every way)." In 365 days, she gains 74 pounds. On the other hand, she loses 72! There is also the unspoken New Year's resolution--the quest for the right man. Alas, here Bridget goes severely off course when she has an affair with her charming cad of a boss. But who would be without their e-mail flirtation focused on a short black skirt? The boss even contends that it is so short as to be nonexistent....

another one

Dean Koontz - The Good Guy [AUDIOBOOK] [UNABRIDGED]
Big Tim Carrier maintains the lowest possible profile, but that tactic crumbles after he is mistaken for a hit man, and when the hit man arrives, poses as the client and tries to cancel. But no one aborts this guy's missions. Tim rushes to shield the prospective victim, writer Linda Paquette, and it soon becomes obvious that the killer has access to every auto-, phone-, and credit-tracing device known to law enforcement (is he a cop?). Moreover, he somehow can pressure law enforcement to be unhelpful, as Tim and Linda discover when Tim's police friend Pete Santo is warned off so firmly that he joins Tim and Linda on the run. For most of its length, this is white-knuckle suspense as gripping as any Koontz has ever written, and the principals all have intriguing backstories that are eventually, with the frustrating exception of the killer's, fully disclosed.

Freebie       e-book: Shaman's Crossing by Robin Hobb                     09:35 PM by Alexander Turcic in E-Books       | Elsewhere on       the Net
I       am pretty jazzed to report that Robin Hobb, one of my favorite fantasy       authors, has released her novel Shaman's       Crossing as a free e-book! In fact, her publisher Eos (imprint of       HarperCollins) is giving       away a new free e-book every two months for 2008. About the book:

Book One of the Soldier Son trilogy, SHAMAN'S CROSSING tells the         story of Nevare Burvelle, destined from birth to be a soldier.
The second son of a newly anointed nobleman, he must endure the         rigors of military training at the elite King's Cavella Academy--and         survive the hatred, cruelty, and derision of his aristocratic         classmates--before joining the King of Gernia's brutal campaign of         territorial expansion. The life chosen for him will be fraught with         hardship, for he must ultimately face a forest-dwelling folk who will         not submit easily to a king's tyranny. And they possess an ancient magic         their would-be conquerors have long discounted...a powerful sorcery that         threatens to claim Nevare Burvelle's soul and devastate his world once         the Dark Evening brings the carnival to Old Thares.
You can download it in various tastes, including Adobe PDF, Microsoft       LIT, and Mobipocket. Download Link       (read the small print; use the coupon code EOS1).

author pirates his own books, and increases sales dramatically

Alchemist Author Pirates His Own Books
Written by Smaran on January 24, 2008

Paulo Coelho, the best-selling author of "The Alchemist", is using
BitTorrent and other filesharing networks as a way to promote his
books. His publishers weren't too keen on giving away free copies of
his books, so he's taken matters into his own hands.

Coelho's view is that letting people swap digital copies of his
books for free increases sales. In a keynote speech (embedded below)
at the Digital, Life, Design conference in Munich he talked about
how uploading the Russian translation of "The Alchemist" made his
sales in Russia go from around 1,000 per year to 100,000, then a
million and more. He said:

In 2001, I sold 10,000 hard copies. And everyone was puzzled. We
came from zero, from 1000, to 10,000. And then the next year we were
over 100,000. [.]

I thought that this is fantastic. You give to the reader the
possibility of reading your books and choosing whether to buy it or
not. [.]

So, I went to BitTorrent and I got all my pirate editions. And I
created a site called The Pirate Coelho.

He's convinced - and rightly so - that letting people download free
copies of his books helps sales. For him the problem is getting
around copyright laws that require him to get the permission of his
translators if he wants to share copies of his books in other
languages.

So is Coelho just seeding torrents of his books? That's just the
beginning. He took it one step further and, as quoted above, set up
a Wordpress blog, Pirate Coelho, where he posts links to free copies
of his books on filesharing networks, FTP sites, and so on. He says
it had a direct impact on sales:

Believe it or not, the sales of the book increased a lot thanks
to the Pirate Coelho site.

In his speech he talks about how the Internet is changing language
and books, and how online "piracy" and BitTorrent have helped him
not only be more widely read, but also sell more books! It's a must
watch.
