Federer bemoans HawkEye blues
MONTREAL: Roger Federer's miniscule faith in HawkEye electronic linecalling sunk even lower on Friday after being denied a match point ace by the on-court circuitry at the Montreal Masters.
The Swiss traditionalist still managed to close out a 6-3, 6-4 quarter-final win over Lleyton Hewitt with a second serve after his half-hearted challenge of the previous shot was ruled wrong.
Federer fell out with HawkEye at Wimbledon, famously claiming during the final against Rafael Nadal: 揑t's killing me today. |

Sharapova beats Dementieva to reach semis
LOS ANGELES: Top seed Maria Sharapova won her seventh straight match on US soil by defeating holder Elena Dementieva 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Los Angeles Classic on Friday.
Sharapova will meet fourth seed Nadia Petrova, who advanced with a 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Virginie Razzano of France

Second seed Jelena Jankovic outlasted Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 to earn herself a semi-final match-up with fellow Serbian and third seed Ana Ivanovic, who beat Maria Kirilenko of Russia 6-4, 6-4.
After looking like she was on her way to a simple victory when leading 4-1 in the second set and holding a break point, Sharapova was pushed to close out the match.
Dementieva rifled a forehand down the line on break point and eventually held to 4-2. She then immediately broke Sharapova at love to 4-3 on a backhand crosscourt winner.
But after Dementieva held to 4-4, Sharapova regained her stride, holding easily to 5-4 and in the final game, winning a marathon rally where Dementieva missed a drop shot winner, and then nearly smashed the umpire's chair with her racquet in frustration.

Djokovic stuns Nadal to set up final clash against Federer

MONTREAL: World number one Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, the rising star of the men's tour, will square off in the final of the Montreal Masters after both recorded hard-fought semi-final victories on Saturday.
Top seed Federer edged past unseeded Czech Radek Stepanek 7-6, 6-2 but the best was saved for last as third seed Djokovic stunned world number two Rafael Nadal 7-5, 6-3.
For the second match in succession, Wimbledon champion Federer hit 13 aces, snuffing out the few opportunities Stepanek was able to force.
Stepanek, who had won 12 of his last 14 matches, had Federer 0-40 in the seventh game but the Swiss fought back.
Stepanek then saved three set points in the tiebreak before Federer rifled a forehand return for a winner to take the set and then broke twice in the second set.

MONTREAL: Radek Stepanek lost his Montreal Masters semi-final to Roger Federer on Saturday and then revealed he was also a loser in love as his engagement to Martina Hingis hit the rocks.
The Czech, who was beaten 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 by Federer, had become engaged to the former women's world number one at the end of last year, but an ATP spokesman said that two were no longer an item.

Sharapova pulls out injured from semi-finals
