Mizuki Alisa to star as detective in drama series “Answer”
Posted on February 29, 2012 by tokyograph

Actress and singer Mizuki Alisa (35) has landed another starring role in a drama series. This spring, she will play a police detective for the first time in “Answer ~ Keishichou Kenshou Sousakan” on Wednesday nights on TV Asahi.

This will be Mizuki’s 24th starring role in a television drama series. Since 1992, she has starred in at least one drama series every year. “Answer” has been scheduled for TV Asahi’s Wednesday 9:00pm time slot, which has a strong reputation for popular detective dramas, including “Aibou,” “Keishichou Sousa Ikka 9 Gakari,” and “Rinjo.”

Mizuki will play the part of Shinkai Akira, an officer at police headquarters whose career has fallen off the promotion track due to a certain case. As a result, she gets assigned to the Evidence Division. Although the division originally played the critical role of re-verifying evidence in order to prevent the possibility of false charges, its duties now simply consist of stamping reports from the investigation divisions. While the other members in the Evidence Division have lost their enthusiasm for their work, Akira takes it upon herself to revitalize the team.

Supporting cast members have not yet been announced. The series will premiere sometime in April.

Goriki Ayame to play heroine in “Mirai Nikki” drama series
Posted on February 29, 2012 by tokyograph

In February, Fuji TV announced a live-action drama adaptation of the manga “Mirai Nikki” (“Future Diary”), starring actor Okada Masaki (22). It has now been revealed that the heroine of the story will be played by up-and-coming actress Goriki Ayame (19).

Goriki has been appearing in a drama series every season since the start of 2011, including two starring roles in the shows “IS ~Otoko Demo Onna Demo Nai Sei~” (last summer) and “Teen Court ~10-dai Saiban~” (currently airing).

As previously explained, the “Mirai Nikki -ANOTHER:WORLD-” drama series is based on Esuno Sakae’s shonen manga of the same name, though several changes have been made. The story revolves around 12 people who obtain a “Future Diary,” which contains things written about the future. They are forced into playing a game of survival, in which they must use the diaries to kill each other and be the last one remaining.

Yuno, the heroine of the manga, has been reimagined as a new character with the same name. However, the character is still one of the owners of a Future Diary, and she has a stalker-like crush on Okada’s character Hoshino Arata.

“Mirai Nikki” premieres in April in Fuji TV’s Saturday 11:10pm-11:55pm time slot.

Cast revealed for the third episode of “Blackboard” miniseries
Posted on March 7, 2012 by tokyograph

In January, it was announced that TBS is planning a 3-episode drama miniseries titled “Blackboard ~Jidai to Tatakatta Kyoushitachi~,” telling stories of teachers in different time periods as they deal with the problems of their era. The main casts for the first two episodes were already revealed: Sakurai Sho (Arashi) and Oshima Yuko (AKB48) for the first, and Sato Koichi and Shida Mirai for the second. Now, the third episode’s cast has been finalized.

Like Sakurai and Sato, Matsushita Nao will play a junior high school teacher for the third episode. All of the episodes are set at the same school in Tokyo, from just after World War II (Sakurai’s episode) to the period following Japan’s postwar economic boom (Sato’s episode) to just after the Tohoku earthquake (Matsushita’s episode).

Matsushita’s character is a passionate teacher trying to teach ideas of courage and hope to a classroom full of distrustful students. Kamiki Ryunosuke and Matsui Jurina (SKE48) will play two of the students, while Kato Shigeaki (NEWS) plays an assistant teacher. Baisho Mitsuko will play the school’s principal.

“Blackboard” is scheduled to air on three consecutive nights, from April 5 to April 7.

Sawajiri Erika to return to television with drama special “Akujo ni Tsuite”
Posted on March 8, 2012 by tokyograph

Sawajiri Erika (25) will star in a drama special on TBS titled “Akujo ni Tsuite,” it has been announced. This will be Sawajiri’s first time acting in a television drama (not counting mobile TV) since a special episode of “1 Litre no Namida” in 2007.

“Akujo ni Tsuite” is an adaptation of a 1978 novel by the late writer Ariyoshi Sawako. The novel was a masterpiece of its time, and it was also notable for having a television drama airing as it was being serialized in a magazine.

Sawajiri plays Kimiko, the main character of the story who has died. Although the title implies that it is a story of a “wicked woman,” the original novel was divided into 27 chapters, one for each “testimony” by someone who knew Kimiko at some point in her life, providing a range of perspectives on what kind of person Kimiko was.

Sawajiri’s supporting cast has not yet been revealed, but expectations are high given the novel’s reputation and history.

“Akujo ni Tsuite” is scheduled to air on April 30.

Young actor Hongo Kanata (21) is the latest cast member to be revealed for the upcoming drama series “Mirai Nikki -ANOTHER:WORLD-.” He will join starring actor Okada Masaki and actress Goriki Ayame as a key character in the story.

Mukai Osamu to play a doctor in upcoming drama

Actor Mukai Osamu will be taking the lead role in TBS‘ upcoming ‘Nichiyou Gekijou‘ (‘Sunday Theater‘) drama, ‘Summer Rescue ~Tenkuu no Shinryojo~‘.

This will be Mukai’s first lead role in a drama series for TBS, and it’s also his first time playing a doctor. He joyfully said, “I can challenge myself to something new once again,” and continued by expressing, “The first drama I starred in was on TBS, so I have special feelings for it. Through ‘Nichiyou Gekijou’, which has history and tradition, I want to make this a drama that will make people feel something.”

The drama will be set in a small mountain clinic 2,000 meters above sea level. Mukai plays the role of ‘Hayami Keigo’, a handsome, young cardiac surgeon who has a bright future of working at a university hospital. However, his superior commands him to examine patients at a small clinic in the mountains during the summer. In a harsh environment cut off from modern medicine, Hayami returns to the origin of medicine, and undergoes a change.

Mukai, who has been receiving medical guidance, commented, “I’ve only received elementary guidance, so I still lack study. But I want to absorb a lot on set.” He also shared that he actually met a doctor from the mountain clinic, “It’s different from a well-equipped hospital. Regarding the drama, Shimura said, “In the strict environment of few medical devices and medicine, what does the doctor do to save the patients, what can the doctor do. The theme is the human’s origin as doctors.“ He continued, “This summer, I will deliver a human drama that is simple, but will make you feel warmth.”

TBS will air ‘Summer Rescue ~Tenkuu no Shinryojo~’ every Sunday night at 9:00 starting in July.

11 short stories by Higashino Keigo to be adapted into a drama

On May 14th, Fuji TV announced that they will be adapting 11 of Higashino Keigo’s best short stories into one omnibus drama called ‘Mokuyo Gekijo – Higashino Keigo Mysteries‘.

The drama will be comprised of 11 episodes, featuring 11 different stories and starring 11 different actors. Of course the name Higashino stands for amazing mystery novels, but it’s his varied use of different atmospheres from serious to comedic to eerie that make each story stand out from his previous works. This kind of variety becomes even more evident when composed into short stories and that’s exactly what Fuji TV wants to offer their viewers this coming summer season. Airing a weekly drama in an omnibus style is a first in the history of Japanese dramas.
Actor Nakai Kiichi will serve as a story guide and will introduce each of the stories for the viewers with a certain breeze of humor.

The first story ‘Sayonara Coach‘ is from a collection called ‘Hannin no Inai Satsujin no Yoru‘ and stars actor Karasawa Toshiaki. He plays an archery coach whose favorite pupil committed suicide after his dream to participate in the Olympics didn’t come true.

Karasawa commented, “First of all Higashino knows how to create gripping mysteries, but it’s also his depiction of the darkness that dwells within each of us and the weakness and slyness of people that makes his works so fascinating. I can’t wait to portray the depth of human psychology together with the rest of the cast.”

Aside from ‘Hannin no Inai Satsujin no Yoru’, Fuji TV will be adapting short stories from Higashino’s collections called ‘Ayashii Hitobito‘ and ‘Ano Koro no Dareka‘.

The second short story, ‘Endless Night‘, stars Matsushita Nao as a woman whose husband is killed. In the third story called ‘Reiko to Reiko‘, a lawyer played by Mizuki Alisa gets dragged into a mysterious murder case related to a puzzling young girl. In ‘Amai Hazu Nanoni‘, Sorimachi Takashi ends up in an ultimate conflict as a man who loses his daughter in a mysterious incident. Nagasawa Masami will have to solve the mysterious puzzle left behind by her murdered boyfriend in a comedic mystery story called ‘Charade ga Ippai‘.

The cast of the remaining six short stories has yet to be confirmed and will be announced at a later date.

‘Mokuyo Gekijo – Higashino Keigo Mysteries’ will air every Thursday at 10:00 pm next season.

On May 16th, it was announced by TV Tokyo that the iconic low-budget adventure drama ‘Yuusha Yoshihiko to Maou no Shiro‘ is going to return with a second season in October.

The original series of ‘Yuusha Yoshihiko to Maou no Shiro’, starring actor Yamada Takayuki, aired last summer and was able to charm many viewers with its homage to the popular ‘Dragon Quest’ franchise and the love for detail despite the extremely low budget. However, it also was the low-budget that gave it the a unique and “handmade” feel that made it such a lovely series. It even became the best-selling Japanese TV drama of 2011 on Amazon Japan, which shows how much people loved this series.

The producers made clear that the second season won’t change this formula at all, which means there won’t be a higher budget nor are they planning to increase its scale.

Of course Yamada will reprise his role as Yoshihiko. He commented, “Just like last time, I’d like to give it my 70% and hope that it will be just as fun and stupid.”

The director of the first season, Fukuda Yuichi, will work on the second season as well. All of Yoshihiko’s comrades played by Kinami Haruka, Muro Tsuyoshi, Sato Jiro, and Takuma Shin, who helped him defeat the devil king at the end of the first season, will also appear in the new season.

The official title for the second season has yet to be announced.

Ashida Mana and Toyokawa Etsushi to star in new Fuji TV drama

Toyokawa Etsushi and Ashida Mana will be starring in the upcoming Fuji TV drama, ‘Beautiful Rain‘, starting in July.

In the drama, Toyokawa plays the role of Keisuke, a single father who is diagnosed with juvenile Alzheimer’s disease. Meanwhile, Ashida will take on the role of a 2nd grade student named Miu who supports her father during his times of trial.

This will be Ashida’s first time starring in a Fuji TV drama series since her big break in ‘Marumo no Okite‘. She commented on Toyokawa saying, “He’s an actor I love so I’m already very excited. I want him to teach me many things like a real father.”

‘Beautiful Rain’ will be the 8th drama in Fuji TV’s ‘Dramatic Sunday’ timeslot, which started back in October of 2010. After his wife passes away, Keisuke resigns from his job at a major construction company and becomes a craftsman at a metalworking factory to support his only daughter Miu. One day, Keisuke is suddenly diagnosed with juvenile Alzheimer’s disease, changing their lifestyle drastically. Keisuke and Miu face the harsh reality together to overcome it.

The script will be written by Habara Daisuke, who is known for his works in ‘Pacchigi!‘ and ‘Hula Girl‘. The drama will also star Miura Shohei, Denden, Kanie Keizou, and Yasuda Ken.

The last time Toyokawa starred in a Fuji TV drama was 13 years ago in 1999 on ‘Kiken na Kankei‘. Regarding ‘Beautiful Rain’, he stated, “It has the themes of the bond between parent and child, the bond between family, and the bond between regions. In the form of a TV drama, I aim to make this a piece of work that will make the viewers feel those things.”

Ashida expressed, “I’m very happy that I get to star in a drama series again.” She continued, “It’s a role I’ve never played before so it’s difficult. But I will do my best.”

Fuji TV’s Shikanai Tsugi explained his reason for choosing Toyokawa saying, “Toyokawa-san has kind eyes toward children, and I wanted to see him playing with children.” He also commented on Ashida with, “By having her portray the delicate heart of a daughter who thinks of her father, not as child actor but as an actress, I thought I would be able to see her new charms.”

‘Beautiful Rain’ will air every Sunday from 9:00 pm starting in July.
