United sedia bangkit aksi di Fulham

Alex Ferguson

- Reuters

Champions League draw

Defending European champions Manchester United drew Portuguese title holders FC Porto during Friday's Champions League quarter-final draw at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

The match brings back memories of 2004, when then Porto boss Jose Mourinho charged up the Old Trafford touchline in delight after a 90th-minute Costinha goal took the Portuguese side through at the expense of the English team.燵/font]:@ :@

Liverpool drew Chelsea yet again and means Rafa Benitez's 2005 champions will face last season's beaten finalists for the fourth time in the knock-out stages in five seasons. The duo have also previously met in the group stages of the competition.燵/font]

Arsenal will play their first leg away to Villarreal in a repeat of the semi-final of 2006, although the Gunners played the first match at home on that occasion and went through 1-0 on aggregate after success at Highbury.燵/font]

Barcelona drew Bayern Munich.燵/font]

The quarter-finals will take place on April 7-8, with the return legs the following week.燵/font]

The draw for the semi-finals was also made in Switzerland. The winners of Liverpool's match against Chelsea will face the winners of Barcelona's match against Bayern for a place in the final.燵/font]

United will take on Arsenal for a place in the Rome showdown - assuming both Premier League teams win their quarter-final ties.燵/font]

The first leg of the semis is due to take place on April 28-29, with the return matches going ahead the following week.

QUARTER-FINALS: Ties to be played April 7/8 & 14/15

Welcome back, skipper

United fans could witness the return of Gary Neville when the Reds take on Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon.

The club captain hasn't featured in any of United's last 10 games but is now back to full fitness.

"Gary's had a groin injury," Sir Alex told media at his pre-match press conference on Friday. "He could be in the squad for Fulham. He's done a full week's training, coupled with a 10-day remedial programme he completed before that.

"He's done very well and hopefully that's him back now."

Of course, Neville isn't the only right-back who's been out of action recently. Wes Brown has made just two substitute appearances since the end of October, while Brazilian teenager Rafael da Silva injured his foot against Blackburn Rovers last month.

"Rafael is now on the 10-day remedial course Gary was on and we hope he can join in with full training towards the end of next week. Unfortunately Wes still isn't near that stage."

Otherwise, United are almost at full strength for the visit to Craven Cottage, with Jonny Evans expected to take Nemanja Vidic's spot in the heart of defence. Vidic will serve the first of a two-match ban after receiving a red card in last weekend's 4-1 defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

It's a result Sir Alex hopes his side can bounce back from, at a ground on which United haven't lost since 1964.

"You have to recover form a defeat," the manager said. "Fulham presents a challenge to us but the training's been very good all week

Vidic rules out United exit
Nemanja Vidic's agent has told Italy's leading clubs to forget any plans they have to buy the Manchester United defender this summer. Vidic has been arguably the best defender in the Premier League this season and is thought to be in the running for the PFA Player of the Year award. And the Serbian's performances have attracted the attention of Serie A scouts with AC Milan and Juventus both reportedly considering a move. However, Silvano Martina says they would be wasting their time, adding: "He plays for Manchester United and is not on the market. There's no way an Italian club could sign him. They don't have the means, and he is happy at Manchester. "He is European and world champion, as a consequence, moving away could only be a step backward. He is an unquestionable starter for the Red Devils."

Gazza: I should have joined United

Paul Gascoigne believes his decision to turn down Manchester United in 1988 may have been one of the biggest mistakes of his career.

n an interview with Sky Sports, Gascoigne pointed to his choice to move to Tottenham, rather than United, when he left Newcastle as a crucial decision, and says his career may have been very different.

"Maybe if I had stayed at Man United I might have still been there," Gascoigne said.

"I don't know, you just look at these players and the squad of young kids that play, young Rooney that's there, the Neville brothers and Becks, the way he just brought them on and there are so many.

"I got invited to the academy and it is a magnificent place and you can see the way he treats his players, he treats them with respect but he also makes men out of boys."

The feeling is apparently mutual, with Ferguson stating this week that the biggest regret of his career was not signing Gascoigne.

Gascoigne claims he tried to right the apparent wrong some years later, but received short shrift from Ferguson.

He said: "It took me six years to get back talking to Sir Alex, I called him from Lazio and asked him would he sign me.

"He was with Eric Cantona and he said he would see what Cantona was going to do but I think everyone knows if you do something to Sir Alex Ferguson the way I did you don't get a second chance."

Gascoigne went on to say that, despite his fragile condition, he would still like to persue a managerial career.

"In time I would love to manage Newcastle but you have got to take your badges, you have got to be strong. I am feeling really strong now."
