Shahrukh says "no" to politics

In the advent of elections almost all political parties seek the support of celebrities as Bollywood stars hold their fort in many places. Following Hema Malini's tryst with the BJP, Dharamendra too has made plans of joining it. The two major political parties have approached the biggest star of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan. The Congress and the BJP have offered him to campaign for them but he has refused politely to oblige them. It was a modest gesture as he thinks he is more suited for films than politics.

Lara's action scenes

Lara Dutta created sensation with sensational "item" number in 'Khakee'. She was flooded with such offers but she refused, as she wants to mark as a leading actress. According to her, she accepted the 'Khakee' offer as Mamta Kulkarni and Urmila Matondkar did wonders in item numbers for Santoshi's film. Lara was in a deadly mood while shooting for Vikram Bhatt's 'Elaan'. She did dangerous action sequences on her own. The interesting thing about it was that there were no duplicates involved in it. Indeed a great revolution!

NAMRATA IS AHEAD OF AISH IN DHULIA'S 'CHARAS'

Tigmanshu Dhulia has proved his mettle as an intelligent writer and director especially in 'Haasil'. Now he is busy in his movie 'Charas - A Joint Effort'. This is based on a subject, which has remained neglected by society. The story depicts the life of a village, which cultivates Charas, but foreigners control the village business. We witnessed the shooting of this movie in Mumbai where there is a small set surrounded by wine and women on all sides. Enters Namrata Shirodkar among a crowd of young dancers on the floor. Suddenly, appears the south Indian singer Mahalaxmi rendering 'Dhuan -dhuan husn???.' Namrata dances beautifully, rendering the song quietly as Mahalaxmi is the playback singer.

Namrata's dance is worth watching. She is not far behind Aish. Dhulia okays the shot but clarifies that this is a backdrop shot only - nothing to do with the story of 'Charas'. According to the storyline, the village has some seven/eight thousand foreigners who are there without any passport or visa. They visit this village to enjoy and smoke charas. Meanwhile a Scotland Yard officer Jimmy Shergill comes in search of a young man. Also come in Irfan Khan, Udas, Harishta Bhatt and Namrata. She is a reporter of a television channel. The dhuan -dhuan song shot earlier introduces Namrata, Uday Chopra and Jimmy. The film has reached the completion stage. Tigmanshu has directed it, Raju Singh has given music and Javed Akhtar lyrics.

Mahima turns an item girl

After strings of flops Mahima Chaudhry is succumbing to the pressures of Bollywood. The Pardes girl never looked up besides her sound start as she was reduced to a second fiddle in films like 'Deewane' and 'Dhadkan'. Miss Chaudhry is all set for dancing acts in 'Hum Do Hamara Ek' that stars Govinda and Raveena Tandon. Item girls like Isha Koppikar, Yana Gupta, Sameera Reddy and lately Lara Dutta underwent a lot of body exposure. Can Mahima adapt herself to its requisites?

Isha Koppikar, the "khallas" girl, had a struggling phase of seven years when she suffered in her career. She made a grim start and later caught the media attention through item numbers. Isha is dejected when she finds that star sons and daughters are given more opportunities than others even though they fare miserable. She felt strongly for those who survive in the film industry on their merits. Isha revolts at these double standards.

Akshay Khanna plans Production House

Akshay Khanna, the promising young son of Vinod Khanna, is having a low time in his acting career. After giving hits like 'Dil Chahta Hai', 'Deewange' and 'Hungama' he is running short of projects. Film offers are irrelevant to him as they lack scope for success, and with a flop like 'L.o.C' he foresees no hope. Akshay plans to open a production house in near future. He prefers good projects that are commercially viabile. He takes one project at a time though he has some useful projects in hand.

Amitabh- Dharamendra teams up

Bollywood's biggest on screen pair Amitabh Bachchan and Dharamendra has teamed up once again after a gap of twenty-three years. The duo gave hits like 'Sholay' and 'Ram Balram' that rocked the box office in 70's and 80's. Amitabh and Dharamendra have teamed up in Soni Juneja's 'Hum Kaun Hai?' Ravi Shanker Sharma directs this film, which is made under the banner of "4U2C Films". After 'Ajooba' Dimple Kapadia is once again paired with Amitabh as she plays her wife in the film. Amitabh plays the lead character of Major Frank John Williams as Dimple plays the character of Frank's wife Sandra. Dharamendra plays the role of Viru. He plays Amitabh's buddy though his role turns important in the climax of the film. Moushmi Chatterjee, Baby Hansika Motwani, Prem Chopra and Vikram Gokhale also play important roles. Director Ravi Shanker Sharma assisted Yash Chopra in 'Vijay' and Sunil Dutt in 'Dard Ka Rishta'. Soni Juneja is the son of producer Tito Juneja who made films like 'Ram Balram' and 'Mr. Natwarlal'.

Amrita Rao: Promises ahead

Has Amrita Rao proved a blessing for the film industry that is running short of promising talents? In 'Ishq Vishq' she did a marvelous job by showing a lot of potential. She was placed opposite another promising star Shahid Kapoor. After the success of the film she was flooded with offers, but she decided to accept only four to five films. Amrita's latest offering is Shahrukh Khan's home production 'Main Hoon Na'. She is paired opposite Zayed Khan. Ace choreographer Farah Khan has directed this movie that would be released next month. She is the only female lead in Gaurang Doshi's 'Deewar-Let's bring back our heroes'. The film has the truckloads of acting talents comprising Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Khanna and Sanjay Dutt. Amrita doesn't get nervous in the presence of such towering talents. The film has the backdrop of Indo-Pak cross border relationship that has Amitabh as an exiled prisoner. But Shahrukh's 'Main Hoon Na' is a family entertainer based on the love hates relationship between two brothers. She has passion for music and singing, and promises to sing if she is offered a good song. Amrita's first priority will be acting though singing may be an additional qualification.

Preity Zinta says media reports affected friendship with Saif

Preity Zinta says that her friendship with co-actor Saif Ali Khan was affected by media reports of their romance but the two remained good friends, a newspaper reported on Friday. The rumors began flying on the set of their new Salaam Namaste.

"I'd be lying if I said we were not affected by what was being said about us, especially since Saif was going through some personal turmoil himself, but he never let it show," Zinta was quoted as saying.

"We share a great chemistry on screen, and are great friends. The buck stops there." Saif has been dealing with turmoil since he separated from Amrita Singh after a marriage of 14 years.

Zinta said her friendship with Saif had not affected her relations with Rosa.

"Why should it? Rosa is a lovely girl. We went out a couple of times when we were in Australia and it was great fun," she said. Zinta said her own relationship with Ness Wadia, deputy managing director of textile company Bombay Dyeing, was "going places" but didn't elaborate.

"We are going places all right, with my traveling all over the world at the moment," she said. "Ness is a very special person in my life, he makes me laugh and smile. I am in a very beautiful phase of my life."

Ash, Bhansali hugh each other

The brief but yet important cold war between Aishwarya Rai and Sanjay Leela Bhansali ended recently. There was a patch- up as they shake hands recently at Filmcity. Ash was addressing a press conference on her forthcoming release 'Kyon Ho Gaya Na'. It was a surprise gesture as they hugged each other. Bhansali is presently shooting for 'Black' that has Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee in the lead role. The film industry can now hope again to see this deadly combination that gave super hits like 'Devdas' and 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'.

"Chalte Chalte" worked as oxygen for Shahrukh's home production Dreamz Unlimited. Rani Mukherjee, who played Shahrukh's love interest in the film feels that Shahrukh should be felicitated for his brilliance. SRK's performances in films like "Kal Ho Na Ho" and "Chalte Chalte" got him accolades and nominations in almost all prestigious film awards

Aamir's charm

The Pre-Independence revolution saga 'The Rising' has been the talk of the town for many months. It gained momentum and it was shot extensively on the locations of Pune. Battle scenes were to be shot and the director Ketan Mehta fell short of junior artistes. One junior assistant director called slum dwellers to work with Aamir Khan. The response was so sporadic that in no time the location was flooded with Aamir's fans.

Beautiful Raveena Tandon has been wedded but some of her works still remain to be visualized. Raveena's long awaited 'Yeh Lamhe Judai Ke' opposite Shahrukh Khan is ready for release by monthend. Ritesh G .Nayyar produces and B.N.Tiwari directs this suspense drama. The surprise package will be newcomers -- Amit Kumar and Divya Desai. Ash's craze flaming up in London

Aishwarya Rai's international stature of a beautiful celebrity is flaming up in London. Gurinder Chaddha's "Bride and Prejudice" promos and trailers showing Aishwarya and Martin Henderson are catching every one's eyes. British audiences are awaiting its release as this will be premiered at the National Arts Cinema in London. The star cast is likely to attend the premiere.

Urmila: I'm going to have a blast

The compliments after the first show of Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara were unbelievable, so much so that a mock-jealous Anupam Kher was heard grumbling, "Hey this is my film too, you know! But I'm not bothered. I'm the producer. And no one can take credit away from me for that. "
Javed Akhtar was visibly moved. "I can't believe you can put in so much sincerity after so many years."

Alyque Padamsee couldn't believe Urmila's face could look so vulnerable after more than a decade in the business.

"Yes, that was sweet," laughs Urmila. "He came and spoke to me during intermission because he felt there'd too much a crowd at the show's end匟e was right匱he compliments haven't stopped coming. One of the best comments came from Mrs Tushar Gandhi. She said we should call the film, Hum Sab Ne Gandhi Ko Mara Hai. That's truly appropriate. The film makes us collectively guilty about the death of the Gandhian ideal

PREETI PLANS BIG INNINGS

Good luck still eludes good-looking pretty young girl Preeti. The cutest looking damsel of today's generation has a row of flops to her credit. No wonder her career took a big leap as she debut in multi faceted 'Mohabbatein'. Preeti got accolades despite the fact that it was embellished with likes of Amitabh and Shahrukh. After 'Mohabbatein' it was a rather silent affair as her rest of the films fell like playing cards. The flops include 'Wah Tera Kya Kahna', 'Annarth' and 'Baaz- A Bird in Danger'.

Preeti Jhangiani plans to play big innings in Bollywood as couples of interesting projects are up her sleeve. She styles her work in Mahesh Kennege's 'Strot', Alok Srivastav's 'Jaane Kya Hoga' and Govinda's 'Sukh'. In 'Strot' she plays a bright and intelligent girl Shreya. She is a scientist and have big future plans. She enjoys plays this character as it has shades of her life. Besides being intelligent she is soft, sweet and simple. Newcomer Rohtash Gaud plays romantic lead opposite to her in this film. Aftab Shivdasani is a cool dude as he pair up with Preeti in 'Jaane Kya Hoga'. The film is fun filled comedy that gives Preeti comical touch. She plays a south Indian girl who falls in love with Aftab. Aftab works in her father's office as then the love chemistry between the two develops. The film has a backdrop of science fiction as a well-crafted love story is woven in it.

After working with Govinda in 'Wah Tera Kya Kehna' she again pairs up with him in his home production 'Sukh'. Besides Govinda the film has Arti Chabria and Chunky Pandey in the lead role. She has a word of praise for Govinda as he has given her enough footage in the film. Govinda's cousin Kirti Kumar directs this family entertainer. Besides these films she is doing Saurabh Shukla's 'Chehra' and Madhur Bhanderkar's 'Aan'. Preeti is confident enough of her success, as her journey to super stardom has already begun.

AJAY-AISH TOGETHER ONCE AGAIN

Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai have once again teamed up in the Rituparno Ghosh's debut Hindi movie 'Raincoat'. Earlier, they were together in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', which had proved a hit at the box office. Sri Venkatesh Films that released Rituparno's last movie 'Chokerbali' will produce this movie. This is the first time that Rituparno Ghosh is directing any Hindi movie. Similarly, Ajay Devgan is working with a Tollywood director for the first time. Both are happy with each other and feel confident that the movie will succeed.

Ajay is fully aware of Rituparno Ghosh's ability, as the latter's 'Chokerbali' starring Aishwarya Rai had journeyed to Locarno film festival last year. So Ajay is banking on Ritu's reputation for the success of this movie. The director is confident too. He claims that he makes films only for himself. The subject matter must appeal to his sensibilities, he adds. When asked about the details of his new movie, Rituparno hinted though briefly that it's on the lines of 'Hum Dil De Chuke Saman'. More than this he would not disclose, he added.

No affair with Harman Baweja: Priyanka

Priyanka Chopra is amused over media reports that she has "split" with producer Harry Baweja's son, Harman.

"Where was the affair for us to have split?" Her laughter rings loud and clear from Singapore where she's shooting with Hrithik Roshan for Krissh.

"Rakesh (Roshan) is really making us both work hard. We start early in the morning and go on till late in the night. There's no time to think about affairs..."

She can't believe that sections of the media are still writing about her alleged romance with Baweja junior.

"First they link us, then they split us. Arrey, I've always said Harman is a dear friend and he continues to be just that."

Priyanka arrived in Singapore from the US where her father is currently undergoing treatment. "He'll be there with mom for another month. Hopefully, after that he'll be completely cured," the concerned daughter sighs.

Sunil turns freedom fighter

Suneil Shetty has been the most prominent action hero of our film industry as this time he tries something different. He will look breed apart in 'Akhand'. Satish Rajwade directs this patriotic film. Akshay Kumar and Abhishek Bachchan will be playing important roles in the film. It is a period film and has a backdrop of pre-independence. Costumes have been given special importance as one of the leading costume designers, Bhanu Athaiya, has been assigned the job. Oscar winner 'Gandhi' had Bhanu Athaiya has its costume designer.
