A phone for business and mid-range users
IF you are looking for a phone with a nice balance of features, size and price, the Samsung X700 pretty much fits the bill.
It is targeted at business users - just check out the nondescript black colour scheme - but it should please most mid-range users out there too.
There is a wonderfully crisp LCD screen, MP3 playback, Bluetooth, FM radio, 1.3-megapixel camera and for multimedia fans, an expandable Transflash (miniSD) memory slot.
I like the rubbery exterior that does not retain oily smudges and gives a warm snug grip to the candybar design. The keys are ergonomic too.
Every major feature is well-implemented. MP3 playback through the stereo speakers is quite clear (albeit a little soft), the camera is classic Samsung quality (excellent) and the screen displays your family photos with high colour accuracy.
Actually, the biggest deal for me was the least visible one.
Samsung's PC software has long been a real pain to use.
Plagued by either poor English or functionality, the Korean company has finally realised that modern phones need to be complemented by a strong PC software package.
The X700 effortlessly synchronises with Microsoft Outlook, transferring contacts, calendar schedules and notes very promptly.
However, the odd thing is that it will not transfer your contacts' addresses, which is something most business users will frown at.
There is also a 1,000 phone contacts limit, which is enough for some but not for nosy journalists (ahem).
And there is one quirk in many Samsung phones: The large 'I' button smack in the centre of the directional keys.
From the home menu, pressing this will send you to the Internet.
But Internet on handphones is expensive and slow (especially since this is a non-3G phone), and it can get aggravating when you accidentally press the button.
To make things worse, the 'I' button also acts as the confirm key when you are navigating menus.
Somebody ought to knock the engineer responsible for this.
The Samsung X700 is going for $368 with a two-year plan.

Easy on the eye and pocket
IT seems slim is in.
The Motorola L6 is a head-turner. Its sleek, candy-bar form is coupled with a vivid, glass colour display.
Quite frankly, I like to be able to show off a gadget which looks good at first glance.
After all, people still do judge a phone by its cover.
Designed with an integrated digital camera, multimedia photo album creation tools and Bluetooth wireless technology, the Motorola L6 is a cool gadget.
Its integrated hands-free speaker-phone appeals to multi-taskers.
Yet, the L6 is perfectly affordable, so I get the best of both worlds.
Another major draw is the entertainment that the phone provides - MP3 and polyphonic ringtones, 24-channels and a 22kHz speaker.
I thought this phone would appeal mostly to women because of its ultra sleek exterior. But I saw a man on the train the other day with the same model - it fitted into the palm of his hand just so.
However, the L6 has a minor drawback. The keypad is difficult to use as it is so flat, particularly if you have long nails which have been manicured to perfection. |

Sony Ericsson W550i Walkman phone
The Sony Ericsson W550i Walkman phone is a magnificent entry into the mobile phone arena. Futuristic and compact (93 x 46.5 x 22.5mm), the phone sports, what is by now a familiar look on a Sony Ericsson, the handbag-like handle.
The music player is one half of the W550i's identity and there are absolutely no mis-steps here, at least not on the software side of things. I love my iPod, but barring the limited 256MB, this phone has me seriously considering ditching a music-only device. When you turn it on, you can elect to go to directly to the Walkman or the phone. But to listen to music in phone mode, just press the W button.
Listen to music by track, artist or playlist. Playlists are created on the phone, not on your desktop. I easily added and deleted songs on-the-fly. The player also has an equalizer that users can manually tweak.
How's the interface? In a word, marvel- lous. Click Up during playback and the playlist slides down. Navigating between menus is extremely simple too.
The two music speakers are fantastic, putting many laptops to shame. There is even an option to make the sound more encompassing called Stereo widening.
At full volume, music playback was louder than the speakers on my Apple Powerbook. And because of the phone's tiny stature, you may wonder where the music is coming from. Well, a sliding lock on the side, a throwover from the Walkman, is a neat addition.
Transferring songs from CDs or music files from my computer is easily done via Disc2Phone, the included application. It all works very simply. Connect the phone to your PC via USB and select the tracks you want. Also, you have an option to down- convert the bitrate of songs - the smaller the bitrate, the more songs you can fit in the phone - before you click on the Transfer button.
If you can't tell already, I absolutely love the Walkman portion. But herein lies the caveat: there is no dedicated earphone jack. If you don't use the speakers, you need to jack in the included remote in the USB data port to connect your headphones. For a Walkman phone, I think this is a mistake. Also, the lack of any sort of memory expan- sion is limiting. The 256MB is good enough for about 60 songs.
I love sliders, candybars and clamshells, but I just could not get used to this swivel- ling phone. Thankfully, you don't really need to open it unless you want to enter data. Making calls or answering them can be done via the five-way navigation and selection buttons.
The 1.8-inch screen is bright and vivid, and a great complement to the 1.3-mega- pixel camera, which is also capable of recording video. Picture quality was good, while phone quality was extremely good. And this being a Walkman phone, you can set MP3s as your ringtone. -- By Alvin Lai, A Freelance Writer
FINAL SAY
The W550i is about the best music-phone in the market right now. |
