Welbeck set for step up

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that teenage striker Danny Welbeck will be considered a first team squad member for the rest of the season.

The highly rated 17-year-old made an impressive cameo appearance against Al-Hilal earlier this week, catching the eye sufficiently to provide further reinforcements in the Reds' senior squad.

"We brought young Welbeck into the squad for the trip to Saudi and he did very well. He will stay with the first team squad now," revealed Sir Alex.

"He抯 no doubt a Manchester United player, the boy, but he抯 only young, he抯 only 17. He needs time, like they all do, and he needs a bit of strength.

"But he抯 got a lot of marvellous things about him. He抯 a local boy, which is nice too, it抯 nice to get a local boy in."

Sir Alex also revealed that Welbeck's ascension to the first team setup has been hastened by United's shock exit from the FA Youth Cup.

"We knew about him, but while the Youth Team were still in the FA Youth Cup, we left him alone, but now they抮e out of the Cup he joins us," he said.

"He抣l be a nice wee addition, I think he抣l get involved once or twice as the season goes on."

Spurs, notoriously fragile under pressure, have reportedly turned over a new leaf following their 5-1 mauling of bitter rivals Arsenal - their first win against the side in over eight years.
Confidence is understandably high at White Hart Lane, but they will be well aware that they will need to put in a tremendous amount of work to remain as consistently lethal to continue heading in the right direction following the landmark victory.
"We don't fear anyone," Poyet declared. "I am able to say we can beat anyone, anywhere."
The former Chelsea player did acknowledge the strength of their next opponents - at least as good as their last - and is hopeful his side will put in a similar level of planning and performance.
"You need a special day and a special plan to play against United and we hope what we are planning is going to work because it is not a normal game in terms of how you play," he said.
"You have to calm down, get back to basics and know it is going to be difficult but also know we are good enough to win the game."
Poyet is part of the Juande Ramos revolution at White Hart Lane; the Spaniard took over from mistreated manager Martin Jol, who was sacked after a poor start to the season.
Ramos has since started laying the groundwork for a revolution and, in fairness, it looks promising so far. Poyet was brought in for his knowledge of the English game, as well as helping the ex-Sevilla coach with the language barrier.
Poyet is happy with how things are going.
"I would say we try to put things in that we like and we want to work," said the Uruguayan.

"Of course fitness is there, the mental (aspect) is there. We talk about being simple, very, very simple, not to complicate things."

There is a rumoured ban on alcohol at the north London club, and Poyet - without explicitly stating whether there was an official ban in place or not - explained the philosophy behind the decision.
"It's not about when or how much," he explained. "We need to convince the players that if they are careful with alcohol they are going to perform better.

"If you are winning they start thinking 'maybe these guys are right'."
