Go Warrior: Japan - Aikido
(Write up from Astro/Discovery website)
Go Warrior: Japan - Aikido
Date: 22-Jul-2004,
Time: 22:30
Tokyo is the city of sensory overload, but hidden beyond the neon bustle of Shinjuku lies the World Aikido HQ - the zen sanctuary of the land's most esoteric martial art. Roland arrives to take up a week-long apprenticeship as an Uchideshi. His mission is to figure out how Aikido works and whether it does work as a fighting art.
Though borne out of the Budo "Warrior" philosophy, Aikido is known as the world's foremost pacifistic martial art. Its practitioners take a zen approach to life and self-defense, and Roland must adapt his upfront fighting style to do the same. But what a challenge: just how does one learn to defend and be gentle at the same time?
Over the years, Aikido evolved from a samurai form of combat to a non-violent form of martial art. Founder Ueshiba was a soldier but how and why did he go from being a fighting machine to a spiritual warrior? To get some answers, Roland visits the Aikido's spiritual home, the Aikikai hombu dojo - the place where all come to seek Aikido nirvana. Roland meets Ueshiba-Sensei, the grandson of the founder who believes deeply in finding oneself though Aikido.
The science of Aikido is an interesting, if controversial one. Aikido has developed its own set of physics based on the "ki" or life energy of the body. To understand Aikido, Roland will have to penetrate the defender's circle and decipher its unusual spherical movements. Roland will also have to spend some time to find his hara - the centre of the body and lodestone of his "ki" - some two fingers below his belly button - and figure out how to use it.
But perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Aikido is its technique. Aikido enables smaller built people like Asians thwart off bigger attackers - not unlike Judo or Jiu-jitsu - but with more grace and style. Only by being completely aware of one's self and surroundings, can one anticipate attacks. To do so successfully means that mind body and spirit are working in harmony. To validate this, Roland goes on the beat with an Aikido trained cop. Can Aikido really help train a person to anticipate attackers in a downtown Tokyo crush? Roland investigates while getting a tour of the city. For those who say Aikido is for sissies, he checks out the Yoshinkan Aikido school - where Aikido is officially taught to Tokyo's Riot Police. Their schools are known for dishing out hard knocks and represent one part of Aikido's evolution beyond the philosophical.
Roland also meets Aikido master Japanese American Thomas Makiyama - an iconoclast in the Aikido family because he's managed to explain Aikido in non mystical terms. He shares some post-modern insights into how Aikido actually works - beyond the deep Japanese terminology. Roland then makes a sojourn to Yamanashi - a town near Mount Fuji - to meet Takeno Sensei, one of Aikido's legends. |

Aikido of Discovery (Go Warrior Series by Roland Osbourne) repeats again at 29/7/04 10.30PM!
Did you both watch Aikido of NGC by Jossete Nadeau or not? Which one is better? IMO, Osbourne's Aikido in Discovery is better. Those Yoshinkan no dosas (action of Yoshinkan style in nihon go) are such amazing! Isn't Yoshinkan style hard?
Have a nice day! |

Something of Yoshinkan style has no difference with Aikikai style, Yoshinkan can be gentle and violent sometime. Ah Boon (from Seremban Dojo) told me about it (through Aikiweb), the problem is how do i control a waza to make my opponent feel safety or harmful while keiko. Ben is right, Aikikai style or Yoshinkan doesn't wonder. What did Yoshinkan Shioda Soke performed about is quite wonderful, Yoshinkan style in Go Warrior by Roland Osbourne is better than Aikikai in NGC by Jossete Nadeau.
O Sensei was pay his concerntration more of spiritual matters than technical, Yoshinkan has no toward to religious since 1990s. The only one Aikido has randori shi'ai is Tomiki style, it more known as Kyogi Aikido (sports or competitive).
About current Ueshiba Moriteru Doshu, i've nothing to say. I'm excatly don't do ritual practice, so Aikikai isn't a ritual practice. I still remember about those seconds of Tmn Maluri Dojo and Serdang Dojo formerly opposite South City, i was just doing Yoshinkan style as self defense and fitness.
I'm happy to hear Ramlan Sensei's good news, thanks for a lot!
Have a nice day! |

What do you guys think about having a seminar on all different type of Akido school around this DEC?
I talked to one of my kohai in msia, and We would like to host a free seminar at any dojo that is available. What I hope to do is that we can have a group discussion on mat.
Oh well, this is just a thought that may bring all the aikidoka who are interested together.
anyway, for everyone update, I am going to a seminar at San Diego and host by Payet sensei and Shioda sensei is the main guess for this seminar. I am so excited. |
