Nadal still the biggest threat, says Federer

NOVAK Djokovic may have given Roger Federer a few worrying moments in the US Open final, but the world No.1 still considers Rafael Nadal as his biggest threat.

The Swiss star became the first man since Bill Tilden in the 1920s to win four straight US Open titles in defeating the fast-rising 20-year-old Serb.

Asked afterwards if this was the start of a Federer-Djokovic rivalry to go with the already established Federer-Nadal rivalry, Federer said it was too early to make such a comparison.

揑f a rivalry comes along, great, but so far we haven't played many times in the finals of tournaments,

World number one Federer claims fourth consecutive US Open title

Swiss virtuoso Roger Federer captured his fourth successive US Open title with cold-blooded efficiency on Sunday, proving to young Serb Novak Djokovic that he is not yet ready for a changing of the guard.

Though far from his fluent best, world number one Federer won his 12th career Grand Slam title, wearing down the third-ranked Serb 7-6, 7-6, 6-4.

Sharapova, De Niro root for Djokovic

RUSSIAN tennis heart-throb Maria Sharapova and actor Robert De Niro added celebrity status and romantic gossip to the supporters' section for Serbia's Novak Djokovic (pic) in Sunday's US Open final.

But don't start making love-40 links just yet between the Russian beauty and 20-year-old Djokovic.

Favourites Russia gunning for third Fed Cup title

MOSCOW: Russia are strongly favoured to capture a third Fed Cup title in four years when they take on defending champions Italy in the Moscow final this weekend.

World number two and losing US Open finalist Svetlana Kuznetsova heads the home team, while Anna Chakvetadze, who reached her first Grand Slam semi-final at Flushing Meadows last week, should also play a major role for the hosts.

Even without world number four Maria Sharapova, who is nursing a shoulder injury, the Russians should be too strong for last year's surprise winners Italy, who do not have a player ranked in the world's top 20.

Russia captain Shamil Tarpishchev, however, has warned his players against overconfidence.

揑t looks easy, but it's not,

Reclusive Henin finally wins over the Belgian public

BRUSSELS: World number one Justine Henin has finally stepped out of the shadow of fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters and won over her home public thanks to a seventh Grand Slam title and overcoming a marriage break-up along the way.

The 25-year-old player earned splash cover on the front page of every Belgian newspaper on Monday after she beat Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova without dropping a set in Saturday's final.

Newspapers from both sides of the country's linguistic divide lauded Henin, declaring her 搕he best tennis player in the world

Favourites Russia aiming for third Fed Cup title

MOSCOW: Russia are strongly tipped to capture a third Fed Cup title in four years when they take on holders Italy in the Moscow final this weekend.

World number two and losing US Open finalist Svetlana Kuznetsova heads the home team, while Anna Chakvetadze, who reached her first Grand Slam semi-final at Flushing Meadows last week, should also play a major role for the hosts.

Even without world number four Maria Sharapova, who is nursing a shoulder injury, the Russians should be too strong for last year抯 surprise winners Italy, who do not have a player ranked in the world抯 top 20.

Russia captain Shamil Tarpishchev, however, has warned his players against overconfidence.

Italy won their first Fed Cup last year when they beat heavy favourites Belgium 3-2 in the final after Justine Henin was forced to withdraw from the deciding doubles through injury.

World number 25 Francesca Schiavone leads the visiting squad along with Mara Santangelo, Roberta Vinci and Flavia Pennetta, who replaced out of form Tathiana Garbin.

The Russians, aiming for their third Fed Cup crown following triumphs in 2004 and 2005, enjoy a 3-0 lead over Italy in head-to-head meetings, including a comfortable 4-1 victory in their last clash two years ago.

Schiavone and Santangelo were the only players from either side to feature in that tie in Brindisi and the talismanic Schiavone should carry her nation抯 hopes once again, this time on Moscow clay at the Luzhniki arena.

揑t抯 going to be very tough. They have some of the best players in the world, but I will give my best for Italy,

Gonzalez through to China Open quarters

BEIJING: Fernando Gonzalez continued to revive his game after a disastrous hardcourt summer, crushing fellow Chilean Paul Capdeville 6-1, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the China Open yesterday.

Gonzalez went 0-4 during the mid-year cement season but has started turning the corner this week in Asia with his first back-to-back victories since Wimbledon.

The meeting was the first between the two countrymen, with second seed Gonzalez moving on to face South Korean sixth seed Lee Hyung-taik, a winner over German Bjorn Phau 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

Fourth seed Ivan Ljubicic, a 2006 quarter-finalist, and holder Marcos Baghdatis both reached the last eight with wins over Serbs and will next face each other for the fourth time with Baghdatis 3-0 in the series.

Ljubicic defeated Viktor Troicki 6-1, 6-1 while Baghdatis accounted for Boris Pashanski 6-4, 6-4.

Spanish third seed Tommy Robredo, who has fallen from the top 10 for the first time since May, defeated Germany抯 Denis Gremelmayr 6-2, 6-4 to move into a second round match-up with South Africa抯 Rik de Voest.

稡ALI: Daniela Hantuchova overcame strong resistance from Dutch left-hander Elise Tamaela yesterday to reach the quarter-finals of the Bali Classic.

The second-seeded Slovak won 7-5, 6-3, saving seven break points against an opponent who played solidly throughout.

German Martina Muller, seeded six, was beaten 6-4, 6-0 by Japan抯 Ayumi Morita while Edina Gallovits of Romania defeated China抯 Yuan Meng 6-2, 6-4.

Seventh seed Aiko Nakamura of Japan needed two hours 54 minutes to overcome Thailand抯 Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-1, 6-7, 7-5 in a first-round match.

Top seed Jelena Jankovic, who faces Australia抯 Casey Dellacqua today, has wasted no time taking up her new role as a Unicef ambassador.

The Serb is auctioning a pearl necklace she has helped to string, with half the proceeds going to Unicef Indonesia and half to Unicef Serbia.

稭UMBAI: India抯 Sania Mirza could miss next week抯 home WTA event in Kolkata due to a wrist injury, she said yesterday.

Mirza, 20, has not played since the US Open earlier this month, where she reached the third round of the singles and the quarter-finals of the doubles.

France抯 Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli is the top seed for the Kolkata tournament.

Croatian teenager Cilic sends top seed packing in straight sets

BEIJING: World number four and top seed Nikolay Davydenko was bounced out of the second round of the China Open by Croatian teenager Marin Cilic yesterday, losing 6-3, 6-4 in the first upset of the tournament.

Less than a week after his US Open semi-final defeat to Roger Federer, the normally indefatigable Russian looked out of sorts in his first encounter with the latest in a line of tall, big-serving Croatians to hit the ATP circuit.

After a three-hour delay for rain, it was perhaps unsurprising that the first set was a shabby affair with Cilic抯 break of Davydenko抯 first service game enough to go one up as the Russian littered his game with loose shots.

揑 don抰 think it was because of the rain but I didn抰 play very well,
