Feeding program could be vary based on the performance/needs by the rabbit.
If the rabbit is too fat but below mature age, then should reduce the protein content in feed. Example: feed more hay, less pellet. Feed more other types hay beside alfalfa hay.
If the rabbit is in weak condition, skinny conditions althought the rabbit is adult. We can introduce higher protein pellet and alfalfa hay, for it to recover back to normal. When the rabbit is in optimum condition, then shift back to lower protein pellet just to maintain the condition.
From my opinion, we should determine the feeding based on the conditions. We can feed all types of hay(except alfalfa) to all ages rabbit. If you found your young bunny is too fat, you can feed more timothy hay. Now i only feed timothy hay in my farm for all ages rabbit.
Some breeders in oversea, said "don't feed alfalfa", some said "only can feed small amount", some even said" feed alfalfa below 6 months." Seems that every breeder have their own view and method to feed their rabbit. So Rabbit owner should determine the method by yourself.
For those who more emphasize "high fiber low protein diet", you may feed more grass hay and reduce pellet (althought you have high protein pellet).
Too many info in net, so judge by your own. Some are practical, but some are not practical in tropical country. |
