Trio ruled out of Villa trip
Sir Alex has ruled the three players substituted through injury during the Carling Cup exit out of Saturday's Barclays Premier League encounter at Aston Villa.
Dimitar Berbatov was withdrawn at half-time in the defeat to Crystal Palace with an ankle problem while Fabio and Rafael were also replaced due to injuries and miss the teatime trip to the Midlands.
"Berbatov's injury isn't serious," explained the manager. "He got injured the week before and it's just a recurrence of it. Hopefully he'll be okay in the next week.
"We've been getting a few injuries but it happens. Every club gets them. At the moment, we're going through a spell where we're getting a few a week, but we have a strong squad and we just have to get on with it."
Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are likely to battle it out for the right-back slot but there's been no change to the situation regarding more long-term absentees Michael Owen, Tom Cleverley and Anderson. Owen and Cleverley are still targeting Christmas for a return while Anderson is out until February.
"The atmosphere is good there, the fans are close to the touchline and we've done well at Villa," added the boss. "Every time we've gone there, we've had to play well to win and we need to do that tomorrow." |

agree ngan ko! tak mengharap season ni man united angkat apa-apa trofi.. midfield lemau, foward tak mcm awal season dahagakan jaringan gol.. please bring 1-2 pemain for january transfer.. can't wait tom cleverly back!!! |

sebenarnya pendapat aku tok alex maybe x aspek tom cleverly dgn ando injed terlalu lama..
so utk mengharapkan gandingan flecther dengan carrick ditambah lak giggs & gibson x de ape makna sangat pon midfield MU tahun nie tanpa scholes..
maybe tok alex nak try si jones utk main sebagai DM tapi dengan peranan jones yg terlalu dibebankan plus rafael & fabio pon kadangkala fancur dalam fitness lum campur lagi rio yang dah nampak karat..
tok alex kena wat sesuatu sama ada beli player or berhadapan dengan realiti MU belum cukup bagus lagi.. |

Aston Villa vs Man United Player Ratings
Manchester United did enough to earn a 1-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday in the Barclays Premier League.
Aston Villa
Given (Off 38') - 6
The Aston Villa goalkeepers pulled his hamstring and had to be taken off - you don't often see that sort of injury happening to a goalkeeper. A bad end to a terrible week for the former Newcastle man who has had to deal with the death of his pal Gary Speed.
Hutton - 6
Strong in the tackle but the entire Aston Villa backline were poor throughout. Needed to be braver and defend higher up the pitch to stop United from seeing so much of the ball.
Collins - 6
On another day he might have celebrated a late equalizer for Villa but his header was well saved by Lindegaard.
Dunne - 6
He was culpable for United's first goal. He left Jones unmarked and the United man made Villa pay.
Warnock - 6
Did a poor job of closing down the United players outside of their penalty box. Villa were camped in their own box and invited too much United pressure.
Jenas (Off 63') - 6
A very quiet full debut for the new Villa boy. His match ended when he injured himself chasing a loose ball.
Herd (Off 58') - 6.5
Herd had a stable game for Villa but could do little to inspire an equalizing goal for the home side.
Bannan - 6.5
Definitely one for the future. Bannan caused United some problems although for the most part it was a fairly comfortable day for Sir Alex Ferguson's men.
Albrighton - 7
Gave Evra a real run for his money - Villa do have some quality in midfield but it is just a shame that they aren't being set-up to play in a more attractive style.
Bent - 6
He had a hopeful penalty shout turned down in the 88th minute after he went down under a collision with a Vidic.
Agbonlahor -6.5
His pace kept United's defenders on their toes but he failed to hit the target when presented with a few good half chances during the 1-0 loss to United.
Subs
Guzan (On 38') - 6.5
United failed to test Guzan enough and the goalkeeper kept a clean sheet against the current Premier League champions without ever having to be brilliant.
Petrov (On 58') - 6.5
Came on and added a bit more attacking intent to Villa's play but he looks a shadow of the player he once was. He's still capable of scoring the odd sensational goal though.
Heskey (On 63') - 6
A poor cameo from the former Liverpool striker. At times he looked clumsy and unsure of himself.
Man Utd
Lindegaard - 6.5
He commanded his area very well and showed Sir Alex Ferguson that he can challenge for David de Gea's place.
Smalling - 6.5
Rarely looked troubled and that was because his positional play was generally very good against Villa. He got forward when he could but also tracked back in responsible fashion.
Ferdinand (Off 64') - 6.5
Having a defender like Ferdinand in the team, who is so comfortable on the ball, gives United an added dimension to their play. Especially against a team like Villa, who sat back too much, Ferdinand was able to link up the United defence with the midfield seamlessly.
Vidic - 7
When Villa asked some questions of the United defence towards the end of the game, Vidic responded in typically impressive style. He kept Villa striker Bent in his pocket and defended his area with some commanding headers.
Evra - 6
Looked better going forward then defending because of Villa midfielder Albrighton, who kept Evra honest at the back with some good runs.
Jones - 8
A centre-back being played in midfield and he did not let his manager or his team-mates down with a clinical finish to give United the win. It was an attacking midfielder's goal really - he timed the run perfectly and belted the ball past one of the Premier League's top goalkeepers. Not a bad effort for your first United goal.
Carrick - 7.5
Carrick's detractors have been silenced for another week with this performance. His passing was sharp and he kick started countless United attacks. His understanding with Rooney was particularly pleasing to watch.
Nani - 7.5
He provided a great cross to set up Jones for the only goal of the game. Nani has now assisted 18 Premier League goals since the start of the 2010/11 season; four more than any other player (Opta).
Rooney - 7.5
Worked tirelessly for his team and should have capped off his performance with a goal late in the game. It was a great one-two with Carrick but Rooney fired his half-volley over the bar from near the penalty spot.
Young (Off 78') - 6.5
Not the homecoming he was probably hoping for. The former Villa man was slightly subdued although the match in general wasn't a great advert for the Premier League.
Hernandez (Off 12') - 6
The Mexican striker did his ankle and worryingly for United fans he was taken off on a stretcher shortly after that. Hopefully, his injury isn't too serious. Not sure why so many players in the game were struggling with the pitch.
Subs
Valencia (On 10') - 6.5
Came on for the injured Hernandez.
Giggs (On 64') - 6.5
Came on for Ferdinand and stablised the United midfield. You can't buy his experience.
Welbeck (On 78') - 6.5
Lively cameo from Welbeck. |

Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez is facing a month out of action with ankle ligament damage suffered during Saturday's 1-0 win at Aston Villa.
Hernandez could miss six games before the new year after suffering the setback when his foot appeared to get caught in the Villa Park surface early in the first half.
A first United goal from Phil Jones after 20 minutes enabled the Red Devils to consolidate second place in the Barclays Premier League and manager Sir Alex Ferguson said of Hernandez's injury: "We think it's torn ankle ligaments unfortunately." |
