Stoke vs Chelsea Player Ratings
Chelsea
Petr Cech - 7
Was not severely tested by the Stoke attack but showed safe hands when called upon.
John Terry - 7
It was always going to be a difficult task to get past Terry and company. And the Chelsea captain ensured his side were tight at the back against a blunt Stoke attack.
Alex - 7
The Brazilian defender was once again solid at the back for the Blues and was useful in attack with his aerial threat.
Ashley Cole - 7
The England left-back was occasionally troubled by Pennant's pace and trickery but did well to weather the threat.
José Bosingwa - 7
The marauding right-back was constantly pouring forward for the Blues but was unable to provide the killer ball to his team-mates.
John Mikel Obi - 7
The Nigerian pulled the strings effectively in midfield for the Blues.
Frank Lampard - 6
An uncharacteristically quiet game for the England midfielder, who failed to get a shot on target throughout the game.
Ramires - 7.5
An engine in Chelsea's attack, the Brazilian midfielder was a constant threat to the Stoke defence with his running and pace.
Florent Malouda (Off 66') - 6
The French winger failed to replicate his form from last season and struggled to penetrate the Stoke defence. Was replaced by Anelka at the hour-mark.
Fernando Torres (Off 89') - 7.5
Despite not getting on the scoresheet - again - the ￡50million signing from Liverpool did look sharper and fitter than he was last season.
Salomon Kalou (Off 76') - 6
Another player who was not at the top of his game. The Ivory Coast midfielder found little joy in attack for the Blues.
Substitutes:
Nicolas Anelka (On 66') - 6.5
Came on for the ineffective Malouda but did not find any joy in front of goal.
Didier Drogba (On 76') - 7.5
Was surprisingly left out of the starting line-up in favour of Torres but had an instant impact when he came on for Kalou.

Chelsea vs West Brom Player Ratings
Chelsea left it late to hand Andre Villas-Boas a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge over a plucky West Brom side on Saturday.
Chelsea
Henrique Hilário - 6.5
The day certainly did not get off to the best of starts for Hilario when Shane Long popped up shortly after kick-off to put WBA in front. However, Chelsea's second choice keeper did grow in confidence after the goal and made a few good saves to ensure that the Blues had every chance of getting back into the match which they did - winning 2-1 at the final whistle.
John Terry - 6.5
Overall the England captain dealt with the threat of Long and Tchoyi but his partnership with Alex was far from settled. Coach Villas-Boas may decide against using this central pairing again if it can be helped.
Alex (Off 66') - 5
Was at fault for the opening goal for WBA. Did not react quickly enough to stop Shane Long from picking his pocket and then was made to look ordinary as he struggled to recover from his mistake. Long simply shrugged off the challenge from Alex before burying his shot into the bottom corner of the Chelsea goal.
Ashley Cole - 6.5
Cole was Chelsea's best defender on the night. He did his defensive duties with minimal fuss and got forward plenty of times to support Chelsea's attack.
Jose Bosingwa - 6
An unspectacular performance from the right-back although he goes down far too easy for my liking. On the plus side, he delivered a few telling crosses into the WBA box a number of times.
John Obi Mikel - 5.5
Chelsea manager Villas-Boas tasked Obi Mikel with the fairly simple job of sitting deep to help Chelsea's defence link up effectively with their attack. He failed to do this and somehow managed to make simple short passes in his own half seem difficult.
Frank Lampard - 6
Frank Lampard was not short of confidence going for goal against WBA, unfortunately he was well defended all game and the majority of his attempts were charged down pretty comfortably. His passing game was also off - Lampard is struggling to impose himself on games these days.
Ramires - 6
Worked for the team but with Chelsea chasing the game for large parts of the clash, he needed to show more creativty. Hard to believe he is Brazilian at times with his lack of flair but we have been spolit over the years by the Samba boys.
Nicolas Anelka - 7
The Frenchman has been doing this his entire career. Drifts in and out of games without really stamping his mark but you just can't write him off even at this stage of his career - it was his quick thinking in the box which gave a Chelsea a way back into the match. Anelka scored to make it 1-1.
Fernando Torres (Off 59') - 6.5
Torres was really fired up for this game. He was diving into challenges and closing down WBA defenders at every turn. Perhaps the manager told him he would only get 60 minutes to impress. No goal again for Torres but he's confidence is coming back.
Salomon Kalou (Off 35') - 4.5
So poor that he was withdrawn from the game befor half-time. You can't really get as bad as that. On the positive it must be comforting for Chelsea fans to see that their new manager is not afraid to make big decisions. Taking a highly paid footballer off before half-time is not an easy thing to do!

Branislav Ivanovic (On 66') - 6
Came on for the erratic Alex.
Florent Malouda (On 35') - 7.5
The Frenchman came on and eventually changed the game. He provided a bit more energy and width to the Chelsea attack and it paid off as he got the winner that Chelsea were so desperately searching for. Malouda at the back post to finish off WBA.
Didier Drogba (On 59') - 7
A powerful display from the real Drogba as the new Drogba watched on from the sidelines. |
