Brendan Rodgers has warned Manchester City that they will have to dig deep if they want to prise Daniel Agger away from Liverpool.
The Premier League champions have been heavily linked with the Denmark defender but the Liverpool manager says the club will only sell to a large offer.
"Agger is one of the leading players in European football, so it is going to be a big valuation," said Rodgers. "Is he a player I want to lose? No. He understands how I want to work and can play a real pivotal part in how I want to play.
"But I am a realist. If someone comes in with a massive bid and it is in the best interests of the club, you have to look at it."
Rodgers added: "Every player has a price and top centre-halves are at a premium – Thiago Silva has left AC Milan for PSG for £40m."
Joe Allen: Liverpool increase bid for Swansea midfielder
Liverpool have made a £15m bid for Swansea's Joe Allen, triggering a release clause in the Wales international's contract.
The 22-year-old midfielder held talks with Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins on Wednesday and will meet with manager Brian Laudrup on Thursday.
Liverpool are now confident they can proceed quickly to complete the move.
Allen would be manager Brendan Rodgers' second signing since moving to Anfield, after the purchase of Fabio Borini.
The two clubs opened negotiations over a deal for Allen last month, but the Anfield club's opening bid was rejected.
Liverpool manager Rodgers offered around £12m plus fellow midfielder Jonjo Shelvey on loan, but that deal was turned down by Swansea chairman Jenkins.
Rodgers and Allen worked closely during the manager's time in south Wales.
Although the new Liverpool manager has a written agreement with Swansea not to return to his former club to try to sign any of their players for the next 12 months, the Welsh club can waive that clause if a deal is deemed to be in the best interests of the club.
Rodgers admitted Allen was a target in July, saying: "He is a very talented player, which everyone knows."
Allen returned to training at Swansea for the first time on Wednesday following his involvement in the Olympic football tournament with the Great Britain side.

Javier Mascherano Would Welcome Daniel Agger Barcelona Move
Former Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has admitted he would welcome the opportunity to link up with Daniel Agger at Barcelona, but stressed any decision on bidding for the defender lies with coach Tito Vilanova.
Agger has been linked with the Liverpool exit door in recent weeks, with Barcelona and Manchester City keen on securing his signature before the summer transfer window slams shut.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers also added to the speculation surrounding a departure for the centre-back by conceding that every player has their price, even if he also insisted he would like to keep hold of the 27-year-old.
For Mascherano, his former team-mate arriving at the Camp Nou would be ideal though.
"I’d love to play with Agger once again", said the Argentine enforcer.
"He is not only a talented footballer, but I also really like him as a person", he added.
"But it is not up to me, it is up to the coach Tito Vilanova."
Barcelona are known to be on the lookout for a new central defender and Agger would fit the bill.
Liverpool are believed to want around £20M for the Denmark international though.
LIVERPOOL are lining up a move for Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin as a replacement for Manchester City target Daniel Agger.
The experienced Uruguay international has been regularly scouted by the Merseysiders over the past 12 months and has emerged as the chief contender to supplement the defence if they cash in on Agger.
Manager Brendan Rodgers admitted on Wednesday that Liverpool would sell Agger at the right price and it is understood he will be allowed a significant portion of the proceeds to secure a replacement for the Dane
