MADHURI: I WANT TO DO FILMS

The heartthrob of Hindi cinema for decades has not run away from Bollywood. She has assured her fans that she would soon resume her screen presence but could not say when in which movie. However, she didn't agree with film critics that she has to commence her second innings in movies. She wonders how come she has been considered away from movies. She is very much parts of Bollywood though she has been busy for sometime after her marriage with a US doctor Sriram Nene and the birth of her son. However, she claims to have been in constant touch with Bollywood either from within or outside the country. Madhuri explained this to the media soon after giving away awards to the winners of a competition titled 'Main Bhi Madhuri' organized by Emami, in Mumbai.

When persistently asked to identify her forthcoming assignments, Madhuri didn't disappoint them but didn't either disclose her plans. However, the media discovered that she has been listening to several scripts of well-known directors like Prakash Jha and Ram Gopal Verma. She has not yet said yes to any script though. But she is not far from the Bollywood scenario, it was confirmed.

She was shocked that about four hundred girls had participated in this competition imitated her style and mannerism beyond recognition. She felt very excited that even after a long time since her charming role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Devdas'. This shows that Madhuri has a lot of fans among the young generation too. Let's wait till she is relieved from her family commitments. Have a heart, please.

PREITY ZINTA, A ZING THING!

Preity Zinta is the latest zing thing ? Any Guesses? Why - because she has what every other star is dying for -- two major blockbusters in a year ('Koi Mil Gaya' and 'Kal Ho Na Ho'). She is not only on the top of the world, but of late she is every director's choice. She is not just the bubbly star but a levelheaded actress too, who is by far the luckiest and immensely talented one. She has set her target and is quiet clear in her mind about her future. She has good banners in her kitty with lots of love from the audience as well as from her beau Lars who adore her as we all do.

GRACEFUL GRACY

The multidimensional 'Lagaan' girl Gracy Singh is back in news. The graceful Gracy Singh, who captured the attention of the media and millions of people by her role of Gauri (in 'Lagaan') will be again seen in 'Muskaan', 'Shart' and 'Munnabhai M.B.B.S.' The actress with a girl next door look graduated from tele-serials to the silver screen. She began her acting career in serial "Amaanat" where she played the role of a Punjabi girl. Gracy found herself lucky as far as her career is concerned. Late Sanjiv Bhattacharya first spotted her and then offered her the role of dinky, bubbly Punjabi girl and later she was offered the role of Gauri in 'Lagaan'. Gracy hails from Delhi, as she recalls that her first brush with glamour came when she was studying in Hansraj College.

She left academics and opted for a career in acting. Gracy considers her brief one and half year in "Amaanat" as encouraging. This helped her groom as an actress. She did a variety of roles in films like 'Armaan' and 'Gangajaal', which were appreciated. Gracy Singh who played the village belle in 'Lagaan' was typecasted and was considered unfit for glamorous roles. She broke the myth by doing films like 'Shart' and 'Muskaan'. She looks vivacious in these films, which will be released soon. The spiritual side of Gracy is quite pleasing as she visits Gurudwara regularly and has interest in aromatherapy and Reiki. The artistic side is quite promising as she learns Bharatnatyam from Deepak Majumdar and is keen on learning guitar. The shy, soft-spoken actress has big plans for future'.

NEWSMAKER KAREENA

Kareena Kapoor, is certainly the biggest newsmaker of the tinsel town. No wonder she will be a show stellar in magnanimous 'L.o.C'. She has a lot to talk about with bold theme oriented 'Chameli' following it. Then there is a line- up of big budgets films, which can create sensation. Among them include Govind Nihalni's 'Dev', Mani Ratnam's 'Yuva', Dharmesh Darshan's 'Bewafa', Satish Kaushik's 'Milenge Milenge', Subhash Ghai's 'Atraj' and Sunil Darshan's untitled opposite Shahid Kapoor. This Kapoor girl will be the hottest cake on Bollywood platter.

WHO AFTER SHAH RUKH ?

A big question is facing the Hindi film industry, and that is who after Shah Rukh Khan? This is natural as Shah Rukh will turn 40 soon. Besides, the king of Bollywood is looking for a hit after 'Veer Zaara' following his movies like 'Swades' directed by no less than Ashutosh Gowarikar of 'Lagaan' and 'Paheli' directed by another famous director Amol Palekar didn't fare as well as expected.

Shah Rukh is known for his versatility, and that's why the industry is feeling the pinch as it hasn't got many to succeed him. There is already a shortage of versatile actors. In case we think of a Khan to succeed SRK, then the names of Fardeen, Saif and Zayed come to our mind. Let's discuss them one by one. Fardeen Khan proved his mettle in 'Dev' and Zayed Khan in SRK starrer 'Main Hoon Na'. But they seem to be far, far away from filling the vacuum created by SRK's absence, if and whenever it comes.

Yes, Saif Ali Khan has gotten a recognition in the industry for his performance in 'Dil Chahta Hai' and then as a versatile and brilliant actor in 'Parineeta'. Besides, he has received the National Award for The Best Actor this year. Saif's acting in 'Parineeta' has been compared with that of Shah Rukh Khan in 'Devdas'. And, Saif's recently released 'Salaam Namastay' has been stated to be faring well at box office. So, he stands in the race though Saif isn't as popular as SRK is.

If we look outside the Khans, we find Abhishek Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan and John Abraham. Yes, Shaahid Kapoor is also waiting in the wing Will any of them fill the vacuum? Undoubtedly, they are the emerging heroes. While Abhishek has shown his excellent performance beginning from 'Refugee' to 'Yuva' to 'Run' and recently in his 'Dhoom'. Besides, he has impressed the viewers by his talent in 'Bunty Aur Babli' and 'Sarkar' in the company of his father Big B. Apart from this, he has on hand 'Dhoom-2', 'Bluff Master' and 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna'.

Next comes Hrithik Roshan who got an amazing success in his father Rakesh's two movies -- 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai' and 'Koi Mil Gaya' His dance performance in 'Lakshya' was excellent though the movie didn't fare well at the ticket window. Now, he is busy in the sequel of 'Koi Mil Gaya' and Abhishek starrer 'Dhoom-2' and Ashutosh' historical 'Jodha Akbar'. The third candidate is model-turned-actor John Abraham. He isn't far behind. Beginning with a lot of admiration from his 'Viroodh', he rose to fame in 'Jism' . He is busy now in Rituparno Ghosh' 'Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam', Priyadarshan's 'Garam Masala' and 'Babul' of Ravi Chopra. And last of all but not the least is the boyfriend of a highly paid actress Kareena Kapoor. He is Shaahid Kapoor who stormed the industry by his performance in 'Ishq Vishq'. He is anxiously awaiting to be seen in Sooraj Barjatya's forthcoming movie.

Amrita Rao's love for beaches

Model-turned actress Amrita Rao is enamored of visiting beaches abroad to get peace of mind. She feels exhausted by her fast moving and busy life in the tinsel world. She has learnt this during her stint abroad for the shoot of an ad film. Even otherwise she likes Bangalore more than Mumbai, maybe because she is a Mangalorean. She says, ?Whenever free from shooting I always prefer to enjoy the company of my younger sister and cousins in Bangalore. Besides, I like to visit our country's holy places for pilgrimage. During our shooting with Aryan Babbar, I visited several such places in the south. Thus, we also learn about the our culture that is the oldest and the richest.

Slim Shilpa found no other way to gain popularity in the south. Besides Shilpa, even her sister Shamita Shetty is found dancing and singing 'Sharara Sharara'. BOBBY DEOL'S NO TO ACT OPPOSITE KAREENA

Bobby Deol is reported to have declined the offer of well-known filmmaker Mani Ratnam. It is said that jr Deol doesn't want to work with Kareena Kapoor any more. This is to recall that Bobby and Kareena had exchanged hot words during the shooting of 'Ajnabee'. Since Bobby Deol, Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukherjee have already been signed on, Mani Ratnam has yet another task of replacing Kareena Kapoor with another suitable female character for his forthcoming movie. Isn't a loss for Kareena?

MANISHA'S SECOND INNINGS

Manisha Koirala, the controversial Bollywood Queen, is back in news with her first home production 'Paisa Vasool'. She begins her second innings as a producer. The much hyped and by far the most controversial actress of our time has come up with a woman-oriented subject 'Paisa Vasool'. Manisha's journey as an actress began with showman Subhash Ghai's magnanimous film 'Saudagar' studded with legends like Dilip Kumar and Raj Kumar. The beautiful Nepali actress who was at the pinnacle of her career with films like 'Agnisakshi' and '1942--A Love Story', never showed promise of making to the top. The blasphemous controversy, which erupted from her 'Ek Chhoti Si Love Story', shook the filmdom. The film, which had some lewd objectionable scenes, became the center of attraction. Manisha accused director of the film K. Shashilal Nair for picturizing obscene scenes with a duplicate. The film was released with no major cuts and much to the disappointment of Manisha.

'Market' was another controversial film, which was based on a bold theme. Manisha said, "The film was based on the real life incident, where the mother marries her young daughter to an old man for money." This was loosely inspired from the "Ameena Case", where a young girl is forcibly married to an old man. However, the bold theme of the film could not attract the audience, she added, as it lacked pace and spontaneity. This resulted in a debacle. The failure and the controversial status of Manisha's career and the film wrote the obituary of her acting career.

Manisha was no longer considered a winning preposition; she was rather alienated. Many critics thought it was a wise move by her as she was all geared for the film production. But Manisha strongly defends herself, and explains, " I call it an act of career expansion". In her maiden home production 'Paisa Vasool', she plays a woman protagonist who is ambitious and lives her life to it's full extreme. She shares the spotlight with long legged gorgeous actress Sushmita Sen who plays equally important role in the film. It would be interesting to watch how Manisha fares as producer. Production has been challenging for Manisha as she describes her thirteen years' acting career stagnating.

"The production has opened new horizons for me as I found my experiences as adventurous. But I confess that my acting talent has suffered in my home production. I offered a better role to Sushmita , which has shades and certainly it would set Sushmita's career on a fast track. Sushmita is excited about the project and hopes for a big bang at the box-office". After Aishwarya Rai and Raveena Tandon, Manisha has taken an aerial route to rejuvenate her sagging filmi career. Neither Aishwarya tasted success in her home production 'Dil Ka Rishta' nor has Raveena caused any stir with 'Stumped'. It remains to be seen how Manisha's film fares at the box-office. Manisha's second innings is certainly the talk of the town as it would make or mar her career. Let's hope for the best though.

'Fareb' girl out of 'Julie'

Suman Ranganathan once known as 'Fareb' girl for her bold scenes and body exposure has recently declined an offer of Dipak Shivdasani for his forthcoming movie 'Julie'. According to the actress, she has said no as she doesn't want to repeat her role of 'Market' in 'Julie'. This is to recall that the 'Qayamat's bikni girl Neha Dhupia plays a prostitute in 'Julie'. Recently, we came across a poster of 'Julie' with bold body exposure by Neha Dhupia. However, the reports say otherwise. The director wants Suman to play a friend of Neha, while Suman dreams of playing the lead character of Julie. Since the director didn't agree to her wish, Suman has said no to do the movie.

AISH TO 'ENTER' POLITICS IN 'SINHASAN'

A former Miss World and Bollywood's top actress Aishwarya Rai has agreed to enter politics. The politicians need not scare. She is not following the political path of Bollywood stars like Sunil Dutt, Rajesh Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha or Vinod Khanna or even Hema Malini to enter active politics and involve themselves in electioneering for their party candidates. She has given her nod to Kalpana Lazmi to act in her proposed movie 'Sinhasan' (throne). Well, Aish will certainly do what politicians do but on screen only to entertain us rather than knock at our doors to solicit votes or favours. But who knows she may play these tricks later on political platforms too. As in the past, Lazmi will concentrate in her forthcoming venture on women power and their strength. Her earlier flicks like 'Rudali', 'Darmiyan' and ' Daman' got awards. Lazmi considered her previous heroines for the coveted role in 'Sinhasan' like Dimple Kapadia, Manisha Koirala and Raveena Tandon. But she felt she needs an upcoming actress for this role.

After a considerable thought, she approached Aish for the role of the heroine of 'Sinhasan'. Luckily Aish readily accepted to play a politician too after earning name as 'Devdas' Paro. This is going to be a challenging assignment for Aish though. Hopefully she would succeed, but not enter real politics to deprive fans from watching her performance on the screen.

'TEHZEEB' GIRL SHOOTS IN LAHORE

The vivacious beauty of Bollywood Urmila Matondkar has been the newsmaker of the year. The glam doll of film industry has matured into a woman of substance as she now prefers author- backed roles supported by sensible direction. Recently, she was conferred "Best Actress of the Year" by Indo-American Society. To add to her histrionics she agreed to shoot a music video in Pakistan. This year saw the downpour of Urmila films, which were class apart, whether it's partition saga 'Pinjar', or estranged mother-daughter relationship drama 'Tehzeeb'. She was simply outstanding. Urmila being a great fan of master batsman Sachin Tendulkar, prefers to be like him in the field of acting.

Urmila visited Wagah border during the music release of film 'Pinjar', which has the backdrop of India-Pakistan Partition. 'Pinjar' was based on Amrita Pritam's novel in which her character marries a Pakistani man.

As announced during her promotional tour of film 'Tehzeeb' in Delhi, Urmila visited Pakistan again to shoot in Lahore for 'Moving Closer' a music video for the Pakistani band, Fuzon, being produced by Serendip Productions and funded by the UNDP. During her visit, she became a focus of unprecedented media coverage. It is reported that her media attention was similar to the one noticed during Indo-Pak summit at Agra when Vajpayee and Musharraf held talks about three years ago.

During her Lahore visit, she was overwhelmed and told the media, " It was a great feeling to cross the border. When I crossed the Wagah border, I was so happy that I couldn't express it into words. There she announced that she had brought a message of peace from the people of India for the people of Pakistan. Her Lahori reception was a positive response to her message, she said. It was the time when both the countries needed to interact more and more, especially in the fields of art. She also urged the two countries to introduce exchanges of artists and musicians. It was a coincidence that Urmila's visit to Pakistan came at a time when Mahesh Bhatt's 'Zakhm' and her daughter Pooja Bhatt's 'Paap' were being exhibited at a three-day- long film festival in Karachi.

According to reports, in the video, Urmila plays a Pakistani girl while a local actor acts as an Indian guy.

Urmila has been a focus of attraction in Pakistan because of her movie 'Tehzeeb', which presented the combination of talents of two generations after a gap of twenty years. And a senior actress like Shabana Azmi played the role of Urmila's mother in the film. Urmila played the title role of 'Tehzeeb' who wanted to rule the world in her own way. According to her, the role fell between a spontaneous actor and a method actor. Incidentally, it was twenty years ago that she and Shabana Azmi played mother and daughter in 'Masoom' where Urmila made her acting debut as a child artiste along with Jugal Hansraj. For an ambitious actress like Urmila Matondkar sky is the limit.

'THE RISING' OF AMISHA

The scintillating sensational beauty of Bollywood Amisha Patel is riding high with Bobby Bedi's 'The Rising'. The innocent smiling beauty stormed the silver screen with the super-successful blockbuster 'Kaho Na Pyar Hai' which wrote history. Amisha's last super hit 'Gadar- Ek Prem Katha', a period film, which has a backdrop of post- Partition of India, was a runaway success. This sent cash register ringing. Aamir tasted international success with his last film 'Lagaan' which was another period film released on the same day along with 'Gadar-Ek Prem Katha'.

She seems to be on top of the world by bagging the lead female role in 'The Rising' starring Aamir Khan. The film is a period film based on the life of Mangal Pandey, who started the first War of Independence, from his hometown of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. After 'Gadar-Ek Prem Katha' this film seems to be the most promising career move for the cute cuddly actress. 'The Rising' is dream come true venture for Amisha as she is working with her idol Aamir Khan for the first time. When asked Amisha said she was swooned by Aamir's charm in his debut film 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak'. She admits that she had a major crush on Aamir after that. "It was my insatiable desire to work with Aamir the day I stepped into the industry. But it was first opportunity, which I availed when I was offered".

Amisha is quite ambitious about the project. "I have full confidence in Aamir's talent and the concept of the film. Narrating about her character in the film 'The Rising', Amisha said, "I play an interesting and important role of a destitute rural woman "Jwala" who is forced for the orthodox ritual of 'Sati' (where wife is burnt alive along with her dead husband's pyre)." A British officer William Gordon, which creates differences between the British officer and Mangal Pandey, rescues her.

This international project is certainly a stepping stone in Amisha's life, who said, "I am very excited about this project, as I shall be working with Hollywood technicians for the first time. Amisha was earlier precarious about her future projects. The beautiful actress admits that she turned down the offers of the films 'Tere Naam' and Feroz Khan's ambitious 'Janasheen'. She said, "I was not interested in playing the female lead in 'Tere Naam', as the role was too submissive and weak. The script was baseless and lacked the scope for a heroine. I turned down 'Janasheen', as I didn't like to play a cheap role." Amisha, professional to the core, thinks that a positive career move can open new horizons for her future. " I do not feel typecast by playing similar roles. I am sure the market demands it. According to her, there is no such success formula, which can hit the audience with panache. Amisha stood like a rock against all odds; it's her grit and determination, which made her going strong day by day. She elaborated, "It's indeed a great achievement for me that I survived in Bollywood without Godfather and feel delighted for the indomitable success I had. The flops and hardships didn't deter my spirit, as I believe in "nothing succeeds like success".

HRITHIK DONATES AWARD MONEY

Bollywood heartthrob Hrithik Roshan, noted playback singer Udit Narayan, writer Javed Siddiqui and industrialist Lalit Khaitan were conferred upon the prestigious Sahara Awadh Samman on Tuesday in a glittering ceremony during finale at the fortnight-long Lucknow Mahotsav. A huge crowd gathered at the Lakshman Mela grounds to have a glimpse of Hrithik. After receiving the Rs. 1 lakh award, the humble actor immediately announced that he would like to donate the award money for the welfare of the handicapped children. An overwhelmed Hrithik thanked Lucknow and its people for giving him such an honor, and said, "It seems that today, I have got everything. But still I have to go very far. "

Uttar Pradesh Development Council Chairman Amar Singh asserted that the Lucknow Mahotsav had provided an exceptionally wonderful opportunity to display the state's rich culture and heritage. Film actor Farooq Sheikh remarked that it was commendable that Uttar Pradesh was conferring the Awadh Samman on an outsider when its own people are denied jobs outside the state. He congratulated the writer and said that it was a matter of pride that a great writer like Javed Siddiqui was honored with the award.
