Grp E: Chelsea 2-0 B. Leverkusen
A brilliant goal from David Luiz and a late Juan Mata strike spared Chelsea's blushes as they stumbled to victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Group E opener.
New manager Andre Villas-Boas had insisted before the game that the Blues were not further than ever from realising Roman Abramovich's dream of European glory.
But they did little to show on Tuesday night that they were about to end their billionaire owner's eight-year quest until a moment of inspiration from marauding defender Luiz midway through the second half.
The deadlock might have been broken earlier but for another night to forget for £50million misfit Fernando Torres, who at least ended the evening on a high by setting up both goals.
Torres was bought to help win the Champions League, with Villas-Boas recruited for the same reason, and the 33-year-old at least proved his tactical acumen with game-changing substitutions for the third home match running.
The Portuguese's team selection said everything about his priorities in what is his biggest week since taking charge, with neither captain John Terry nor Frank Lampard in the starting XI ahead of Sunday's crunch Barclays Premier League trip to Manchester United.
The Blues suffered their season-defining slump when both were injured last term, so it was something of a gamble to leave them out.
The same could be said about the recall of Torres, who got his wish to play alongside Mata and Daniel Sturridge despite the club's probe into an interview which quoted him appearing to criticise his other team-mates.
Torres would have been licking his lips when Sturridge swung in a second-minute cross which he hooked narrowly over in what proved a frantic opening.
Both sides then saw goals controversially disallowed, Omer Toprak's header from a corner ruled out for pushing and Torres' flick denied by an offside flag against Raul Meireles, who tried to backheel the ball home.
Torres' flick had set up his new team-mate but the frustrations that go with a run of one goal in 22 games soon emerged.
The striker was booked for an an ugly late lunge on Simon Rolfes before missing a golden chance to end his drought when he hesitated trying to convert Mata's 10th-minute cutback.
After a 15-minute lull in which Chelsea struggled to cope with Leverkusen's incessant pressing, Torres fluffed his lines again when well placed before slicing horribly high and wide from 25 yards.
The impressive Sturridge showed his team-mate the way by almost catching out Bernd
Leno with rasping near-post drive, nearly beating the goalkeeper to Jose Bosingwa's cross, teasing Gonzalo Castro into a booking and driving a long-range blast just past the upright.
Mata also shone once again, his free-kick on the stroke of half-time nodded straight at Leno by Branislav Ivanovic.
Ivanovic was needed at the other end 10 minutes into the second half, a crucial interception denying Andre Schurrle, who then created a gilt-edged chance for Michael Ballack, Petr Cech racing off his line to block the former Chelsea star's shot.
Torres had also nodded straight at Leno, while Luiz was booked for hauling back Schurrle, who poked straight at Cech after being played in by Stefan Kiessling.
But the save of the night came from Leno, who brilliantly turned Sturridge's first-time finish from Ashley Cole's cross onto the post.
Villas-Boas then raised eyebrows by taking off Sturridge and Meireles for Lampard and Nicolas Anelka, while Leverkusen responded by throwing on Renato Augusto for Ballack.
It was Villas-Boas' changes that reaped instant rewards.
Luiz surged forward from the back, fed Cole, who found Torres, and the striker laid off for the former to find the bottom corner from 15 yards.
Kiessling might have equalised when he sent a diving header wide but Chelsea's tails were up, Anelka wreaking havoc and Mata forcing a brilliant fingertip save from Leno.
Luiz, who earlier hurt himself making a tackle, was withdrawn to a standing ovation, with Alex coming on before Anelka was denied what looked a perfectly legitimate headed goal by an offside flag.
Chelsea endured a nervy finish before finally exploiting the space in behind when Torres squared for Mata to slide home. |

Man Utd vs Chelsea Player Ratings
Manchester United claimed a record-equalling 18th successive home win by beating Chelsea 3-1 to march two points clear at the Premier League summit.
Manchester United
David De Gea - 7.5
Rose up to the occasion when called upon. Dealt with crosses with confidence and pulled off a fantastic save to deny Ramires a goal in the first half.
Chris Smalling (Off 62') - 7
Wasn't as effective going up against intelligent players like Mata, Torres or Anelka. Found it hard to deal with the Frenchman when he came on at halftime. Showed his aerial prowess by heading home the first goal.
Phil Jones - 8
His barnstorming antics will catch the attention of opponents but his defensive performance was one to behold for youngsters learning their trade. He managed to deny Torres plenty of times by nudging him off the ball. Not an easy task. Just ask Nemanja Vidic.
Jonny Evans - 6
Not the fastest on the draw, Evans was the weakest link in the United back line. He was the victim of Ramires and Sturridge throughout the match and was lucky not to have a goal conceded because of his lax positioning.
Patrice Evra - 6.5
Helped out Young on the overlap but left the flank exposed too often for Sturridge and Ramires to exploit. Could have done better as captain to calm the players down and get their passing game going.
Luis Nani - 8.5
Marked his 100th Premier League appearance with an amazing belter out of the blue to strike the blues into the Blues (I just had to say that, didn't I). He was efficient and accurate with his passing throughout, gifting Rooney an open goal, though perhaps unintentionally, and a penalty kick as well.
Anderson (Off 63') - 5.5
A disappointing performance after a good start to the season, Anderson gave the ball away far too easily and far too frequently.
Darren Fletcher - 7.5
Won possession well to cover for a mispassing Anderson. His return will be a welcome sight for Sir Alex Ferguson, who has missed his defensive midfielder far too long from a virus attack. Fletcher was also dangerous on the attack, linking the ball ahead for counter-attacks.
Ashley Young - 7.5
His usual dangerous self down the left flank, Young provided the penetration and width as expected. Troubled Bosingwa frequently and opened the game with an assist for Smalling to score.
Wayne Rooney - 8
He didn't score a hat-trick, but Rooney preserved his record of scoring in all of United's matches this season. Played well dodging in between the Chelsea midfield and defence. Rooney was unfortunate to miss the penalty after slipping on a loose piece of turf. Looking crestfallen on his butt after the slip didn't help his image much either.
Javier Hernandez (Off 79') - 6.5
Playing of the shoulders of the defenders usually means goals for the diminutive Mexican but not against Terry and Ivanovic. Hernandez was well shut out by the two big men but did well enough to create space for his teammates.
Substitutes
Michael Carrick (On 63') - 5.5
Nondescript performance from Carrick, though he could have done better in tracking back to help his defenders.
Antonio Valencia (On 62') - 6.5
Came on for an injured Smalling and added an extra thrust to United's wing play with his speed.
Dimitar Berbatov (On 79') - 5
Missed an open goal after Rooney put him through.
Chelsea
Petr Cech - 6.5
Not at fault for any of the goals, Cech had little to do otherwise.
Jose Bosingwa - 5.5
Let Young past him far too many times. Was also rather rash going into the challenge to concede a penalty despite getting some of the ball.
Branislav Ivanovic - 6.5
Looked better going forward than defending, Ivanovic's highlight in the match was his headed chances at goal. A pretty quiet shift for him, and managed to keep Hernandez under wraps.
John Terry - 6
Looked unsteady when the wingers cut in and ran at him. Terry's age and lack of speed may be a problem soon, but he still managed to do well enough with his experience. For now.
Ashley Cole - 7.5
When Cole overlapped on the left, Chelsea looked the most alive. Delivered his crosses well and did his part defensively too.
Ramires - 6
His shot at an open goal was saved by De Gea. Ramires had most of the chances to put Chelsea back into the game but was not clinical enough despite his dangerous movements to create chances.
Raul Meireles (Off 79') - 7
Played a very good game holding back and lobbing the ball over for his strikers to chase after. His passing game seems to suit his new Spanish teammates.
Frank Lampard (Off 45') - 5
Strangely subdued in the game, Lampard doesn't seem to fit into the pass-and-move Chelsea style that favours Meireles, Ramires, Mata and Torres.
Daniel Sturridge - 5
A wasteful performance after scoring a fantastic goal last week, Sturridge had quite a few chances to put a goal away but wasn't clinical enough.
Fernando Torres - 8
Looked more like his old self with dangerous runs and movements abound. Easily Chelsea's best player, successfully rounding the United defence frequently and finally broke his scoring duck. Missed an absolute sitter from the six yard box after some brilliant individual work, but he shouldn't let that mar an excellent showing.
Juan Mata - 7.5
His link-up play with Torres is starting to show shades of a potentially deadly partnership. Mata's wing play is definitely one of the trickiest to deal with in the Premier League due to his wily change of speed and through passes.
Substitutes
Nicolas Anelka (On 45') - 7.5
Made an immediate impact when he came on with a through ball to let Torres on goal. Changed the game with his passing and movement, generating the extra spark Chelsea needed.
Romelu Lukaku (On 68') - 6
Hardly seen after coming on.
Jon Obi Mikel (On 79') - N/A
Chealsea main baik bila lampard x main. |
