Ways to support someone who went through something traumatic :
Listen to them
Check-in with them frequently
Offer to help them find a therapist, if they're ready to seek help.
Engage in relaxing activities with them
Remind them that they're loved
Educate urself on PTSD to look out for symptoms or to understand their condition if diagnosed.

3rd point tu kbykn org mmg akan suggest utk seek help from therapist. Kdg mcm paksa pon ye juga. Ini dari apa yg kte bca la. And sbnarnya survivor ni tau je dorang kena jumpa psy semua tu utk berubat pulihkan trauma. Cuma mungkin dorg belum ready, mungkin juga dorg tatau yg buat treatment psy kkm kena bayar singgit je..betul kan singgit? Ke singgit tu cuma initial stage utk appointmnt je?

Opening up isnt easy.

For trauma survivors, sharing bout their experience or disclosing their PTSD diagnosis can be stressful and terrifying.

Talking about trauma can be triggering, so do not force them to talk about it if they arent ready or dont feel like it.

When a survivor shares their story with u:
Remain judgement-free
Give them 100% of ur attention
Tell them that u believe them
Tell them that it wasnt their fault
Thank them for sharing their story
Offer support, only if u can

When a survivor shares their story with u, DO NOT:
Try to "fix" them
Interrupt or talk over them
Provide unsolicited advice
Tell them things could be worse
Make promises u cant keep

Try to understand their triggers.

Emotional and sensory information from traumatic experiences is stored in our brain and bodies. So even though what happened is in the past, when a trauma survivor is triggered by something that reminds them of their trauma, their fear structure is activated. And it feels like theyre reliving the traumatic experience over again.

And it's terrifying.

Someone might be triggered if :
They start panicking
They freeze or are unresponsive
They begin panting or hyperventilating
They burst into tears or seemed terrified
They start yelling or screaming
They seem detached from reality

How to help when someone is triggered?
Listen to them
Stay with them - dont leave unless they ask u to
Holding both hands together *
Take a few deep breathes together
Gently remind them they're safe
Ask if u can give them a hug
Validate their feelings

When someone is triggered, DO NOT:
Dismiss their feeling
Ignore that it's happening
Try to "fix" them or find solutions
Tell them theyre overreacting or to "just calm down"
Touch them if they say they dont want to be touched or are backing away from u.
