Urmila's grievance

Urmila Matondkar is very much disappointed as her best performances in 'Bhoot' last year and in 'Naina' this year have failed to bring her any award whereas other heroines have been bagging them. Industry circles sympathize with her but also advise her to follow her mentor Ram Gopal Verma who doesn't believe in awards at all.

Esha Deol shifts to humorous roles

Esha Deol has already acted in a dozen movies by now, but she impressed the viewers by her 'Dhoom' by exposing her body. Now, she is trying her luck in her humorous roles. Even the viewers don't like skin shows any more and are keen on deriving entertainment from films. So, she would soon be seen in three humorous movies like Anees Bazmi's comedy ' No Entry', David Dhawan's 'Shaadi Number One' and Indrakumar's 'Pyare Mohan'. She claims that she has been more successful in winning the viewers than the galaxy of stars ranging from Anil Kapoor to Salman Khan, including Fardeen Khan.

Preity is worried

Preity Zinta who has been presently busy in shooting for Yashraj banner's 'Salaam Namastay' to the best of her ability has vowed to play only brilliant roles in future. However, she doesn't know how to keep her words. Though she has been anxiously waiting for the directors and the producers to sign her in their movies, she hasn't found many approaching her. Besides, she is told that the directors and the producers are knocking at the doors of Rani Mukherjee. This has certainly worried Preity .

Amitabh's new roles

Amitabh has been doing a variety of roles these days. After his excellent performance in his ' Sarkar', he will be seen on the big screen in director Sanjay Daima's 'Ramji Londonwale' and Mahesh Manjrekar's 'Struggler' besides a Kannad movie 'Amrit Dhare'. Since there is a great demand for Big B, Amitabh has decided to play different roles to satisfy his fans.

Shah Rukh-crazy Polish fans clap, dance away

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is making hordes of Polish youths literally dance to his tunes, with hordes of them turning up for his films at an international festival here.

People here appear thrilled to have five popular films of their favourite Indian hero screened at the Cieszyn film festival. Every evening at 10 p.m. they are showing Shah Rukh's films.

The young crowds have been lapping up his performances in Kal Ho Na Ho, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Main Hoon Na and Dil Se. The moment the song and dance sequences begin, they start dancing and clapping.

Thanks to the Internet, the youths seem well informed about his life and his achievements.

Roman Gutek, a distributor of Shah Rukh's films at the festival, told IANS: "The success of his films has prompted me to release them throughout Poland now. The response is so overwhelming, it is beyond my comprehension."

Earlier Gutek had released the actor's Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham with Polish subtitles, which ran for two months in Warsaw.
Anil Wadhwa, the Indian ambassador to Poland, said: "With the success of Shah Rukh's films, it is clear there is a demand for recent Indian movies and Poland is a mature market, which Indian producers should tap.

"I have been persuading the external publicity division of the external affairs ministry and NFDC (National Film Development Corp) in the last eight months to realise the potential of the Polish market. People want to see Indian movies which are totally different from the Western ones," Wadhwa said.

Indian classics by Satyajit Ray, Guru Dutt and Raj Kapoor are also being shown in the morning hours - when the serious film buffs and critics are present - during the 11-day festival.

The response is positive, but the craze for Shah Rukh is something else!

Jackie Shroff

He's considered one of Bollywood's most affable stars. So much so, Jackie Shroff is open to fielding questions about everything under the sun including his take on the opposite sex, his own sexuality, his family life, his financial difficulties and then perhaps, his film career!

This has been the story of his life, ever since Jackie graduated from being a small-time 'dada' at Teenbatti (in South Bombay) to a popular model, till finally, Dev Anand picked him up for a minor part in 'Swami Dada' (1982).

Following which, Subhash Ghai picked him up for the part of an unkempt goon-turned-virtuous 'Hero' (1983). This romantic musical co-starring Meenakshi Seshadri sent the cash registers ringing and promptly turned Jackie into the hottest newcomer on the block.

This, at a time when star sons like Sanjay Dutt and Sunny Deol too were trying to get their feet into the door along with another newcomer, Anil Kapoor.

Jackie and Anil formed the most popular male team of the 1980s _ so much so, a few enterprising gossip rags even alleged that the duo was having an affair! While that may well have been sheer over-enthusiasm their on-screen rapport was there for everyone to see.

All the way from their first film, 'Andar Bahar' (1984), to 'Yudh' (1985), 'Karma' (1986), 'Uttar Dakshin' (1987), 'Kala Baazar', 'Parinda' and 'RamLakhan' (all 1989), Jackie and Anil formed the perfect foil to each other _ with the former usually playing the strong silent type, while the latter stuck to being loud and gregarious.

But through most part of this association, Jackie was considered the handsome non-actor, while Anil was usually taken to be the star performer. This, despite the fact that he'd proved himself quite firmly with a moving performance in Mahesh Bhatt's 'Kaash' (1987), essaying the role of a once-famous actor struggling to cope with failure and rejection.

Finally, it was Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 'Parinda' that changed Jackie's 'wooden' image and even fetched him a 'Best Actor' Filmfare award! But Jackie displayed very little prudence in his selection of films and picked up just about anything that came his way (unlike Anil, who was always choosy).

As a result, he registered more flops than hits _ many of them being B-grade projects. And yet he managed to keep afloat because of his 'action hero' image and the success of films like '100 Days' (1991), 'Gardish' (1993) and 'Khalnayak' (1993).

Once again, a small but significant role in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's '1942: A Love Story' (1993), fetched him another award, while his portrayal of the sophisticated businessman who's caught between two sisters in 'Aaina' (1993) too was well-received.

From hereon though, Jackie's career just wandered about aimlessly, with innumerable misses and the odd hit like 'Agnisakshi' (1996) or 'Border' (1997).

In the meantime, the star had formed his own company, Jackie Shroff Entertainment Limited (JSEL) and produced a film called 'Grahan', which was directed by his friend, Shashilal Nair.

This was three years ago. But 'Grahan' is still waiting in the cans for a theatre release. Jackie has kept himself busy doing everything from signing several Mithun Chakraborty quickies to anchoring a television show called 'Missing'.

Now, he's giving film production a second shot with Mahesh Manjrekar's 'Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai' starring Govinda and Sonali Bendre. The film is nearing completion and Jackie hopes he can somehow ensure that 'Grahan' too rides on the back of this project and makes it to the big screen.

It is also heard that he's is now prepared to go back to doing what he started off with _ playing the villain. Given his easygoing disposition and 'nice guy' image, wonder how he's going to fit the bill. But who knows, he might just pull this gamble off too _ like he's done several times in the past.

Jackie Shroff turns bad guy.

Actor Jackie Shroff is on cloud nine these days. His forthcoming film Antarmahal directed by Rituparno Ghosh has been selected for the competitive section of the prestigious Locarno film festival in the best film and best actor categories.

Jackie is confident his performance in the film will not go unnoticed in the festival scheduled for Aug 10-13, reports Bollywood Trade. Jackie plays an authoritative zamindar (landlord) in the film, who marries a second time to a woman half his age when his first wife fails to bear him a son.

"It is a power-packed role in a very sensitively made film," says the suave actor. "It is not always that one gets an opportunity to work with a director of the calibre of Rituparno Ghosh. It's always a privilege working with such directors. I am glad to have a very promising line-up of films with some of the best directors in the industry."

Among Jackie's forthcoming films are Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Yagna, in which he plays an out and out negative role. "I am looking forward to working with Vinod Chopra once again after Mission Kashmir. That was also the first time I essayed a negative role and I got a very positive feedback for it," he says.
Then there's Priyadarshan's Kyonki, in which he plays the role of a doctor in a madhouse, Tanuja Chandra's Runway and Poonam Sinha's comedy Mera Dil Lekar Dekho. He smiles: "After doing 180 films, I have this urge to do something different."

Kamal Haasan

Director Trilokchander spotted a precocious young boy and in that auspicious moment something flashed. He prophesied, "this brilliant boy will go a long way, and achieve fame one day." So it was. The youngest son of Srinivasan, the freedom fighter from Paramagudi in Rameshwaram, went a loooong way, not only making a mark on regional cinema, but on Indian cinema. The history of Indian cinema has never seen the kind of Kamal Haasan - a cine lover who's just hasn't had enough of his love.

Eccentric, experimental, maverick, chameleon, wiz - all kinds of adjectives are thrown up to describe the fascinating growth of Kamal Haasan. But just as the labels become tangible, our man has outgrown it. His latest avataar being that of an actor-writer-director. And for all his tomfoolery in Chachi 420, Kamal Haasan is not an escapist. He is a lover of history, and very sensitive to his enviroment. He thinks, and wants you to think as is evident in his ambitious epoch called Hey ! Ram. Hey ! Ram's dismal performance at the box-office has not quelled Haasan's desire to make Maruda Nayakan, another ambitious story of a revolutionary.

Kamal's own journey to being a legend is quite revolutionary. Kamal Haasan foray into films was with Kalathur Kannama as a child artiste. He made an impact in a set-up that had Gemini Ganesan, who was known by the Tamil cine-goers as 'Kadal Mannan' (the King of Love) and the legendary Savithri. He became everybody's favourite child. Over the years when Kamal turned hero, he would take over the mantle from Gemini Ganesan as 'Kadal Ilavarasan' (the Prince of Love). But much before that, he had to go through the insecure adolescent period.

In this period, Kamal took formal training in Bharatnatyam, caught up with plays in Madras, and hung around with his childhood friends like Santhaana Bharathi, P. Vaasu and others who went on to become directors. Kamal re-entered films as an Assistant dance director, who was known to pass caustic comments on actors who didn't know their job and that "he would've done a better job". And the moment arrived, when the renowned director, K Balachander spotted him.

KB (as he was popularly known) exploited his protege's talent in films like Avargal (Them) where he played a ventriloquist to a rebel who falls in love with an older woman in Apoorva Raagangal (Strange Melodies). Another director saw star potential in Kamal, and persuaded him to dance and sing which he did much against his wishes. He saw it as a chance to gain fame and fortune so that oneday he could make the movie he wanted to. Guru, Sattam En Kayil (Law is in my Hands), Ellam Inba Mayam (Everything seems Lovely) were a part of that phase. But when he did Barathiraaja's Padhinaaru Vaiadhinile (At the age of 16) - he was catapulted to fame along with Sri Devi, Rajnikant and music director Illayaraja. Three other names that would make a difference to cinema. Kamal played a psychopathic killer in another Barathiraajan movie Sigappu Rojakkal (Red Rose). With Sagalakala Vallavan, he came to be known as an action hero and became the darling of the masses.

Kamal started acting in films made in Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam. And one such Telugu blockbuster, K B Balachander's Marocharitra came to be remade as Ek Duje Ke Liye in Hindi. The film success in Hindi was phenomenonal and so was Kamal and Rati's debut in Hindi films. But Kamal's dalliance in Hindi films was short-lived. Not getting the respect due him, because of the strong North influence, Kamal returned to the warmth of the South, only to find other heroes ruling the arena. Rajnikant emerged as the No. 1 action star. Kamal now concentrated at not only gaining popularity down south, but stretching his talents in serious cinema.

Came Moondram Pirai and Velu Nayakan, and Kamal Haasan bagged two National awards. It was also a time when Kamal Haasan started playing characters - like a dance critic in Sagara Sangaman in Telugu, where he displayed his dancing skills; did a Chaplinesque Punnagai Mannan, a James Bond kind of character in Vikram. Vikram's flopping at the box-office may not have been an auspicious start for Kamal Haasan production company, but he went on to successfully produce films like Apoorva Sahodargal, Thevar Magan. Velu Nayakan was a landmark in Kamal's career. It not only propelled the gifted actor in him to greater heights, but also highlighted his flair for prosthetic make-up and guises. This was earlier evident in films like 16 Vaiadhinile where he played a cripple and Kalyanaraman, in which he essayed double roles, one of who turns into a ghost. It continues to this day in films like Apoorva Sahodargal where he played a dwarf; in Michael Madana Kama Rajan where he essayed a four different roles; Hindustani as father and son; Avvai Shanmughi (later remade as Chachi 420 in Hindi) where he disguises himself as an ayah of Brahmin origins.

Screenplay, editing and scripting and even singing - every aspect of filming gets his full attention. His experiments like the silent movie Pushpak Vimaana in Kannada, later released as Pushpak in Hindi has delighted his fans. There's nothing that he is not aware of. His Thevar Magan when made in Hindi as Virasat earned him the award for the Best Screenplay. Thevar Magan again can go down in history as one of the first Indian commercial film to have made an entry to the Oscars in the foreign film segment. For an actor rejected by the Hindi film industry, most of his films have been remade in Hindi and have been successful. But whether it has been Amol Palekar in Solva Sawan (a remake of Padhinaaru Vaiadhinile); Rajesh Khanna in The Red Rose (Sigappu Rojakkal); (Dharmendra in Ghazab (remake of Kalyanraman); Amitabh Bachchan in Aakhree Raasta (Oru Kaithiyan Dairy); Vinod Khanna in Nayakan (Velu Nayakan); Anil Kapoor in Eeshwar, Virasat (Thevar Magan) and Biwi No. 1 (Sathi Leelavathi) were nowhere near Kamal Haasan's performance. The irony of it all!

Kamal Haasan will continue to inspire his contemporaries around the country, and while he is at it, will leave behind an hard act to follow. The actor continues to act in other director's film the latest being Thenali to be directed by Ravikumar; the director in him is adamant to complete his dream project in Maruda Nayagan (irrespective of the fate of Hey ! Ram) and continues to stretch his directorial plans to television where he wants serialise a Tamil epic story of Ponniyin Selvan. Nothing is too small or great, as long as he finds a platform to express his restless creativity. All the time not forgetting to spend time with the three women in his life - wife Sarika and his two daughters. Even they don't mind chipping in when he wants them to. After all for nothing are they a Kamal Haasan family.

Zayed Khan 25 years old, son of Sanjay Khan and Firoz Khan as uncle, so the acting is in his blood. He is a perfect new-age hero. He is mature and intelligent. He has the looks of a Greek god and a mind blowing screen presence. With a cinematic sense grounded in hard core film making.

Zayed Khan's debut film was action-thriller-romantic Chura Liya Hai Tumne (2000) opposite Esha Deol. The film does don't done well but his acting is appreciated. His latest realease is Farah Khan's Main Hoon Na (2004) alongwith Shah Rukh Khan and Sushmita and amrita Rao.

Zayed Khan done his schooling at Wellan Boys boarding school at Dehradun. After his 10th, Zayed moved to International School at Kodaikanal which shaped in him a strong desire to study abroad. Zayed headed west for a comprehensive course in film making that taught him all aspects of film making. Zayed in not the run of the mill star-son who is using the family way to break into Bollywood. His is a culmination of years of efforts put into realizing a dream. A dream that took roots early on at the age of 8 years, when Zayed first gone on the sets of Kaala Dhanda Gore Log. From then he wanted to become an actor in a very concrete wholehearted way.

Zayed Khan has chosen to be selective about the film he is doing and stayed away from hype and glitz. Rather than spreading himself thin, Zayed is focusing on substance. His forthcoming films are Idiot opposite Celina Jaitley and Bisaat opposite Esha Deol. According to his long term approach, Bollywood sure has a winner in Zayed Khan.
