Young happy to have snubbed City

Ashley Young has insisted he has no regrets about snubbing Manchester City in favour of Manchester United.
England winger Young joined United following four years at Aston Villa, but he could have been turning out for the blue half of Manchester after being the subject of interest from City.

City's package is believed to have topped that of United, but Young claims his only thought was to make the move to Old Trafford.

Asked about City's interest, Young, speaking to the Daily Mirror, said: "That's true, but as soon as I heard about Manchester United there was no other club for me.

"It's Manchester United. They are the biggest club in the world, and I think if you ask anyone who they want to play for the majority will say: 'Man United'.

"The fan base, the team and what they have won in the past is [all] amazing.

"I want to be part of that - and be able to bring the title back to United again and make history with a 20th."

Young made a dazzling start to his United career, but his form has dipped in recent weeks. With injuries mounting, Young is likely to play a prominent role in the second half of the season.

He said: "I do believe we can win the title. We are this side of Christmas and have many games to play and points to play for.

"If we keep up the form we have shown from the start of the season, then I am sure we will be able to retain that title.

"There are going to be a lot of games to look forward to and we have to keep ourselves fresh and go into games confident. The manager instils that and we go out there and enjoy it."

Fergie urges Pogba to stay

Sir Alex Ferguson has urged in-demand starlet Paul Pogba to stay at Manchester United and has vowed to give the midfielder a first team chance over the busy Christmas period.
Pogba is attracting interest from a host of top clubs, including Manchester City, Juventus and AC Milan, and is stalling over a new contract at Old Trafford, with Ferguson admitting dealings with the player's agent have been troublesome.

French youngster Pogba, 18, only arrived at United from Le Havre in 2009 and Ferguson warned: "You don't need to chase money at a club like Manchester United, it will eventually find you."

The United boss added: "He's got an agent who's obviously become a bit difficult but we're negotiating with this agent and we want the boy to stay. But it's down to the individual also.

"Matt Busby summed it up perfectly, that you don't need to chase money at a club like Manchester United, it will eventually find you. If you're good enough, you will earn money and become rich playing for us, there's no doubt about it.

"You hope he gets the right advice. All the young players who remain here always do well. It's one of these situations that they can chase the money early in their career but at the end it's not the same as if they'd stayed here.

"It's the decision the player has to take himself, no matter who he is, about where they think their best future will be. He just needs to look round about him to realise that. But if he wants to go, there is nothing we can do about it."

Contrary to previous reports, which suggested Pogba's contract expires in the summer, Ferguson revealed United have a 12 month option on the present deal.

QPR vs Man United Player Ratings

QPR

Radek Cerny - 7

Was busy all afternoon, and pulled off a number of brilliant saves. However, he should have done better with United's second, when he let Carrick's weakly-struck shot ease past his right hand.

Luke Young - 7.5

Excellent shift from the right-back, despite being given a constant headache by Nani's attacking forays. Held his ground well, and was never afraid to venture forward for QPR.

Matthew Connolly - 6

Lacking in match practice and it was apparent early on as he let Rooney ghost in to head past Cerny. Was exposed on a number of occasions, and had to be bailed out by his defensive comrades.

Danny Gabbidon - 7

Decent game from Gabbidon, who was happy to sit back and allow the United attackers to pick up possession in midfield, as long as they did not venture near the goal he was guarding.

Put in an outstanding block to deny Danny Welbeck after the United was played through on goal with only Cerny to beat.

Armand Traore - 7

Excellent going forward, where he showed plenty of pace and a couple of neat tricks to keep his opponents on their toes. Defensively, however, he left plenty to be desired, and was regularly seen hunting for his direct opponent. On the few occasions he managed to pick up Valencia, the Ecuadorian winger ghosted past him like he wasn't even there.

Jamie Mackie - 8

The only QPR player who looked likely to carve United open, Mackie gave Evra a nervous opening half-hour, running straight for him, and getting the better of the Frenchman on a number of occasions.

Whipped in a number of good crosses too, which his forwards failed to capitalise on.

Joey Barton - 5

Anonymous display from the controversial midfielder. Was dangerous from set-piece deliveries, but was completely missing in open play.

Alejandro Faurlin - 7.5

The Argentinean was a classy presence throughout, and knew when to be simple with his passing, and when to try to audacious.

Faurlin was calm in possession, and always looked to play his strikers in behind the United defence. Was however culpable for United's second when he allowed Carrick, who isn't one of United's fastest, to run 40 yards through on goal.

Shaun Wright-Phillips (off 65') - 6.5

Lively showing in the first half from QPR's pocket dynamo, but he faded away in the second period and was understandably hauled off after the hour mark.

Jay Bothroyd (off 75') - 5.5

Skillful on the ball, but Bothroyd failed to match his team-mates in determination and work ethic, choosing to stand and watch when United pushed forward.

Heidar Helguson (off 65') - 6

The Iceland international worked hard all day long, but was unable to muster any meaningful effort on goal, apart from a first-half header from a Barton corner which sailed harmlessly wide. Top marks for effort, but he was well marshalled by the United defence.

Subs

DJ Campbell (on 65') - 5

Brought on with 25 minutes remaining, and could very easily have pulled one back for his team when he failed to convert from two yards out, with just David de Gea to beat.

Adel Taarabt (on 65') - 6.5

Top marks for the glimpses of quality he showed during his brief cameo, but his poor attitude is holding him back from making more of an impact in the Premier League.

Clint Hill (on 75') - N/A

Brought on late in the game with little time to make an impact.

Man United

David de Gea - 7.5

Pulled off a good save in the first half with his left foot to deny QPR, before showing good hands when claiming a number of high balls. The young Spaniard is slowly coming out of his shell at Old Trafford.

Chris Smalling - 7

Despite Sir Alex Ferguson's recent support for Brazilian full-backs Rafael and Fabio, it's hard to see either of them staking their claim for the right-back slot, especially with Smalling in such form.

Was almost unbeatable in the air (except for one occasion when he lost out to Wright-Phillips of all people), and showed good strength and pace. Who said all full-backs need to be brimming with flair?

Rio Ferdinand - 8

Excellent game from the veteran defender, who put his body on the line for his team. Totally marked Helguson out of the game in the first half, and displayed his trademark reading of the game by sticking out a foot every time QPR looked to carve United open.

Jonny Evans - 7

One of his better games in recent memory.

Patrice Evra - 6.5

Evra was severely exposed by Mackie for much of the first half, but recovered and was better after the break. Seems to always struggle against nifty wingers, with Aaron Lennon and Wright-Phillips causing him plenty of problems in the past.

Antonio Valencia - 8

The Ecuador international has had to bide his time this season following the arrival of Ashley Young, but he was back to his best on Sunday, offering United the sheer penetration few others can provide.

Burst down the right in the first minute, before delivering in a perfect cross for Rooney to nod home, and never stopped toiling down his flank, providing an outlet for his team-mates.

Phil Jones - 9

Man-of-the-match performance from Jones, who covered every blade of grass at Loftus Road, prompting Phil Neville to call him a "young Roy Keane" on Twitter.

Jones was always keen to put in a strong challenge, showed a wide range of passing, and never stopped running both forward and backwards. The young England international was the epitome of a "box-to-box" midfielder on Sunday.

Michael Carrick - 7.5

Carrick looked content to let the younger Jones do most of the running, and spent almost all his time dictating play in the centre circle. Except for one moment in the 56th minute, when he picked up a loose ball in midfield, glided (let's be fair, you can't exactly call that sprinting) all the way into the penalty box, before firing a shot past Cerny.

Nani (off 88') - 8

Many would say he was an absolute threat for United on the day, twisting and tormenting the QPR defenders on countless occasions. Still, he was self-indulgent at times, and still needs to learn when to pass, and when to go it on his own. At the moment, he goes for the latter nine times out of ten, choosing only to pass when he has no other option.

Danny Welbeck (off 63') - 6.5

Quiet game from the youngster, who dallied on the ball on numerous occasions, allowing the QPR players to steal in. Was slightly untidy with his first touch as well, but showed what he's capable off in the second half when he almost got on the scoresheet with a delightful, curling effort.

Wayne Rooney (off 78') - 8.5

Was absolutely brilliant on the day, giving United a first-minute lead after glancing home Valencia's cross.

Rooney was at the heart of almost every United move, and would have claimed man-of-the-match honours had he not wasted an excellent chance at the start of the second half when he failed to control the ball after being played through on goal.

Subs

Javier Hernandez (on 63') - 6.5

Good to see the Mexican return from injury ahead of schedule, but unfortunately for him, he wasn't able to test Cerny.

Ryan Giggs (on 78') - N/A

Came on late in the game and showed a couple of nice touches.

Ashley Young (on 88') - N/A

Brought on late with little time to make an impact.

FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED – QPR VS. UNITED
Posted on Monday, 19th December 2011 by Zayd Jawad

Comfortable victory
After the utter disappointment experienced in the Champions League, with Manchester United failing to come away from Basel with the required point to put them through to the next round, spirits will have been lifted when the appropriate response was made against Wolves with a dominant 4-1 victory that took them to within two points of league leaders, Manchester City. This week, a visit to Loftus Road was scheduled for a match with Queen’s Park Rangers. A potentially tough match against Premier League newcomers who had so far impressed at times so far this season, with performances such as victory against Chelsea making them a side not to be taken lightly. An unchanged line up ad been announced for the trip, with Valencia and Nani occupying the wings, Welbeck and Rooney up front and Carrick with Jones in the centre of midfield. Notable inclusions in the squad included Javier Hernandez, back sooner than originally thought as well as Dimitar Berbatov. United did not take long to assert themselves on the game, making the perfect start with 53 seconds on the clock, a cross from Valencia found the head of Wayne Rooney, giving his side the early breakthrough. The game continued in much the same way that it had started, with United getting forward often, creating plenty and by half time could well have been 2 or 3 more goals to the good. QPR also had one or two moments that could have brought them level, but United may well have been disappointed going in at half time only the single goal in front. The second half saw United once again take control, with Rooney testing Cerny in the Rangers goal early on. However,  the second goal came in the 56th minute when Michael Carrick shrugged off his challenge to run on and hit a low shot at the near post that should have been dealt with better but found it’s way past the ‘keeper to give his side a comfortable cushion. United did not sit back however, as they continued to go forward with the likes of Nani, Rooney and Welbeck all providing a threat as well as Hernandez when he replaced Welbeck later on. Even Jonny Evans could have got himself a couple of goals, corners finding his head on more than one occasion. Overall then a pleasing display for United fans and Sir Alex Ferguson, with a comfortable 2-0 away victory and keeping the pressure on City at the top of the table. With that here are five things that may be taken from the game.

1) Rooney – settling back in to his role up front
After breaking his brief dry spell in front of goal against Wolves, Sir Alex Ferguson was hoping it would lead to a glut of goals from Wayne Rooney. Grabbing another against QPR in such quick time was certainly a step in the right direction in a game that saw Rooney look far more threatening than he has done in recent times perhaps starting to settle back in to a role up front after a spell playing somewhat deeper. He also seems to be enjoying partnering Welbeck up front and based on Welbeck’s form, could see it as a more regular pairing in the future.

2) Valencia starting to pick up form again
After a start to the season that saw relatively few starts and a couple of appearances that appeared to suggest a “delayed reaction” to his broken leg (i.e. backing off and appearing more timid and hesitant in his play), it will have been encouraging to see Valencia once again provide a threat and find himself involved in much of United’s play so often channeled on the right hand side. Throughout he looked to get involved and could well have had more besides the one assist for Rooney early on. It is also worth noting that Nani did not struggle as much as he has done recently playing out the on left, having a strong showing himself.

3) Welbeck worthy of more starts
With many good performances in the team on Sunday, one player that certainly shone was Danny Welbeck. Although not man of the match (Wayne Rooney deserves that), he certainly showed how well he has developed and continued to show why he has become such a regular this season. He had his chances to score, most notably a curling shot just outside the box that was produced a fine save from Cerny, and showed great energy in trying to create chances going forward right up until his substitution  later on.

4) Darren Fletcher out indefinitely, Phil Jones taking position in midfield, is another needed?
With the news that Darren Fletcher has been suffering from Ulcerative Colitis and will be needing time off with what was already perceived to be a United midfield lacking in a certain quality and depth, thoughts have turned to the potential for new signings in January, something often swiftly batted away by Ferguson. One does wonder whether the depth of the midfield is enough to see them through to the end of the season but as some will argue, to be in contention in the league at this point with it means it cannot be that bad. Phil Jones has impressed since being given the role but many still believe a central defensive position is the more natural position and one that he should be taking up regularly. Speaking of which, Jones himself had chances to score, having a one-on-one effort saved in the first half and hitting the post in the second. His tackles were as strong and impressive as they have been for much of the season and if he would rather he been in defense, one must admire his contribution to the midfield all the same.

5) Threat going forward and creative… but wasteful
One cannot deny that United were not short of ideas on Sunday, regularly creating various avenues in which to set up chances and provide goal scoring opportunities. However, one gripe may be that they did not make more of the chances when they presented themselves and in all what may be seen as wasteful in a victory that may have seen more. Jones, Rooney, Hernandez and Welbeck and others all had chances and although some were down to good goalkeeping, one could argue that they should have done better. Although a victory is a victory and the 3 points are most important, there were times when fans may have wondered if their side were to rue certain missed opportunities, when QPR themselves could have grabbed a goal or two.
