Simao: Real Madrid bid for Man Utd's Ronaldo wrecked Portugal's Euros
Atletico Madrid ace Simao says Portugal's Euro2008 campaign was hurt by the constant speculation linking Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo with Real Madrid.
Simao said: "It did hurt Cristiano a little. He was focusing on the championship, but every day there was talk of Madrid. The coach (Luiz Felipe Scolari) tried to keep him calm and we spoke a lot with him.
"But I think it hurt him that things didn't work out the way he wanted. As a squad we tried to help him, because we needed him, but in the end we had no luck against Germany."

“We” Have The Team To Beat Atleti - Nadal
Tennis’ number one ranked player in the world, Rafael Nadal is confident that his favourite club Real Madrid have what it takes to beat crosstown rivals Atlético in Saturday’s massive derbi clash.
Tennis star Nadal, a die-hard Los Blancos supporter, just happens to be back on home soil to contest the Masters Series in Madrid and he is eager to catch this weekend’s El Derbi Madrileño in the flesh.
Although he acknowledged that Atlético will be a tough nut to crack, especially at the Vicente Calderón, he believes his favourite team will be able to overcome their fierce rivals.
“Atleti have a very good team and they have a lot of great players and it will be difficult to win at the Calderón,” he told realmadrid.com.
“But I think we have the team to obtain the victory,” he added confidently, before he went on to praise one of his favourite players, Ruud van Nistelrooy.
“He always makes it look easy. As soon as he arrives at the edge of the box, he is always looking to score and he is very lethal infront of goal,” praised Nadal, who is also full of admiration for Raúl and Iker Casillas.
The reigning Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion then revealed his pick for the end-of-year Ballon d’Or accolade.
“I hope a Spaniard wins it and I hope it’s Iker because he is the best goalkeeper in the world right now,” he concluded. |
