Tottenham vs Man City Player Ratings
Manchester City
Joe Hart - 7
Despite not being bothered throughout the match, the England keeper made a good flying save to deny Van Der Vaart's freekick and a fierece Defoe shot.
Joleon Lescott - 6.5
Overmatched against the tall Crouch. Other than that, an admirable performance in terms of closing Van Der Vaart down.
Vincent Kompany - 7
Did well to keep Van Der Vaart quiet throughout and the usual calm self when the ball comes
Gaël Clichy - 6.5
Matched the speedy Lennon defensively and prevented him from cutting in to cross, which is no easy task.
Pablo Zabaleta (Off 64') - 7.5
Denied Bale from making his cutting runs and crosses.
Yaya Touré - 7
Loping about the center of the pitch as usual, his level-headed presence was a contrast to the many niggling and needless yellow cards throughout the match. Displayed the attacking aspect of his play well, with a Nasir-esque run to set up Dzeko
Gareth Barry - 7
The designated hatchet man did well to assist his defence, hounding the Spurs attack back into their own half.
Sergio Agüero (Off 76') - 8.5
Played a secondary role today, laying off passes to his teammates, being involved in three of the build-ups. Out-manouvered Dawson to score a beautiful solo goal.
Samir Nasri - 9
Constantly threatened whenever he brought the play forward with intelligent movement and passing. His brilliance showed when he outflanked the Spurs defence to cross in for Dzeko twice.
David Silva - 7
A relative quiet game by his standards, but still made his contribution with the usual threatening passing and scoring.
Edin Dzeko - 10
Displayed the form that prompted City to sign him from Wolfsburg with four goals. Left leg, right foot, header, shot from distance. What more can a player ask for?
Substitutes:
Richards (On 64') - 6
Displayed his usual bombing runs to bother the Spurs left flank.
Stefan Savic (On 76') - 5
Yellow-carded for running onto the pitch before being substituted on. Full marks for enthusiasm, zero for intelligence. |

Manchester City 3-0 Wigan
Sergio Aguero scored a brilliant Barclays Premier League hat-trick against Wigan to overshadow the return of his compatriot Carlos Tevez to the Manchester City line-up.
Aguero was almost unplayable as he vied for the man-of-the-match honours with equally impressive David Silva.
As for Tevez, his less-than-rapturous welcome from the City faithful was compounded by a feeble penalty miss.
This was a steamrollering for Wigan as City made light of the upheaval caused by the departure of chief executive Garry Cook on Friday.
City manager Roberto Mancini could even afford to be leave out Edin Dzeko, scorer of four goals in their last match, and keep him fresh for the club's debut in Champions League against Napoli on Wednesday.
City demonstrated their threat in the opening minutes when Adam Johnson brought down the ball nicely but produced a shot only a golfer would have been proud of, lofted over the bar.
Silva brought a comfortable save out of Ali Al Habsi, before Joleon Lescott headed over from a couple of yards out.
The writing already looked to be on the wall for Wigan, and so it proved as Aguero fired home in the 13th minute.
Tevez was involved, scampering down the left before cutting the ball inside to Silva. His feint wrong-footed Wigan and he fed Aguero, on the right of the area, who shot through Figueroa's legs into the far corner.
If it seemed ominous for Wigan, they were nearly back in the game when Figueroa's ball over the defence caught Vincent Kompany sleeping and Franco Di Santo poked the ball past Joe Hart, but wide of the post too.
Tevez hardly endeared himself to the City fans further by having a weak penalty saved.
Silva won the spot-kick, felled by a crazy lunge from Adrian Lopez, and though Aguero appeared to keen to take it, Tevez insisted.
Aguero continued to impress, bending a shot from the left just past the top corner, then Johnson blasted a couple of yards high from 25 yards out.
Micah Richards hit the underside of the crossbar after a lovely Tevez through-ball - the assistant referee correctly judging the ball did not bounce over the line - before some more Aguero magic saw the Argentinian go inches wide again.
City fans could hardly believe their side were not two up when first Lescott headed against the upright and then Yaya Toure rifled the rebound narrowly passed the other post.
Wigan had had little to shout about and when Victor Moses did get his head to a free-kick he was unable to find the target.
With half-time looming, Hart demonstrated his importance to City with a one-on-one block to deny Di Santo after a deflected shot landed at his feet.
City began the second half in much the same fashion - chances galore without the finishing touch.
Such wastefulness seemed to be inviting Wigan to respond, and they came agonisingly close to doing so when the impressive Moses fed Hugo Rodallega and he teed himself for a fierce drive that Hart managed to keep out by a combination of his hand and leg.
That sparked the end of Tevez's afternoon, replaced by Samir Nasri, and almost immediately City made the game safe.
Nasri was involved as well, nudging a backheel from Silva into Aguero's path and his perfectly-placed curling shot ended up nestling low in the corner of the net.
Aguero's hat-trick arrived in the 69th minute, courtesy of more outstanding play from Silva who spun off his markers and delivered a gorgeous through-ball. Aguero just needed to keep his cool, and he did so with aplomb, rolling the ball easily past Al Habsi.
With the game wrapped up Mancini sent on Mario Balotelli for his hat-trick hero, who departed to a deafening standing ovation.
Johnson should have made it 4-0 but shot too close to the keeper, and then curled wide when handed another chance.
There may be no Cook at City any more - but this was still a feast. |

Man City vs Napoli Player Ratings
Manchester City marked their return to Europe's premiere competition with a 1-1 draw at home against a dangerous Napoli side.
Napoli
De Sanctis - 6.5
Kept Napoli in the game with some decisive saves and good organizing, but could have prevented the Kolarov freekick from going in by diving to his left.
Salvatore Aronica - 7
He was given the unpleasant task of marking David Silva but done admirably well, forcing the Spaniard down the flank and cutting off his usual stream of dangerous through passes. Also dealt with the overlapping Zabaleta well.
Hugo Campagnaro - 7
Keeping Nasri tame is no easy task and Campagnaro did enough to put the Spaniard off whenever he could. A pretty quiet game for him, which is always a good thing for a defender.
Paolo Cannavaro - 8
He can look back on tonight's performance and proudly tell his grandkids about it decades on. Facing a world-class strikeforce, the younger brother of ex-Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro did well to break down the attack when it came threatening into the box.
Christian Maggio - 7
He broke up City's play well before it could develop. Maggio showed great technique to set up the Napoli goal; he won the ball from Barry, sprinted 40 yards upfield before feeding Cavani with an excellent through pass.
Marek Hamšík (Off 89') - 8.5
This man holds the key to Napoli's fate. The heart and soul of almost every Napoli attack, his passing, distribution and vision was the main threat to Man City. Unfortunate to have a shot cleared off the line by Vincent Kompany.
Juan Zúñiga - 7
He did well in covering Zabaleta's overlapping runs and managed to assist in the attack with a few runs ahead too, but his defensive contributions were vital.
Walter Gargano - 6.5
The Uruguay international did well tucking in behind the midfield and shielding the defence while tracking down Toure's movement.
Gokhan Inler - 5.5
Was all over City's midfield but gave away too many freekicks. Including the one that Kolarov scored.
Edinson Cavani (Off 84') - 7.5
A great finish on the counter showcased Napoli's precise passing. Always troubling the City defense by keeping the ball amazingly well.
Ezequiel Lavezzi (Off 58') - 7.5
Formed a great partnership with Cavani and Hamsik and found each other easily. Lavezzi's movement stretched the City defence and created space for his teammates to play in.
Substitutions
Blerim Dzemaili (On 58') - 6
Came on with a bang, linking up well with Hamsik and almost blasting a shot just over but couldn't do much in the end.
Goran Pandev (On 84') - N/A
Mario Santana (On 89') - N/A
Manchester City
Joe Hart - 6.5
Didn't do much except to let the goal in between his legs.
Vincent Kompany - 7
Cleared a ball off the line, but had a scare late in the match with an uncharacteristically poor back pass. Not the most stable performance, but did well enough.
Pablo Zabaleta - 7
Supported well on the overlap but his decision-making still isn't the best. Could have done better in terms of choosing when to pass or cut in with the ball.
Joleon Lescott - 6.5
Was tormented by the fantastic trio of Hamsik, Lavezzi and Cavani all match long, but still managed well enough to keep them at bay.
Aleksandar Kolarov - 7.5 (Off 75')
Powerful curler of a freekick to equalise for City and he also did a great job forcing the play wide when Napoli attacked.
Gareth Barry - 5.5
Lost the ball too easily a few times - including the one that led to Napoli's goal. Wasn't up to the task of handling Hamsik as well.
Samir Nasri (Off 76') - 6.5
The Frenchman did well to penetrate down the flank and link up City's play with his passing but his final touch let him and his teammates down.
Yaya Toure - 6.5
The tall, loping midfielder started the first half well, hitting a shot against the bar but was then pegged back by the counter-attacking Napoli midfielders. He wasn't able to impose himself in the midfield as usual, partly due to the brilliance and speed of Hamsik and Lavezzi.
Edin Džeko (Off 81') - 6
He was closed down by Cannavaro, Campagnaro and Aronica, but could have done better in terms of breaking away and making more space.
Sergio Agüero - 7
Played off as a second striker well, and always threatening running on and challenging the defenders with his speed and skill. Hit the woodwork and was unfortunate not to score.
David Silva - 6.5
Combined with Zabaleta down the flank but the chemistry isn't there yet as they both look quite unsure of each other's movements. Wasn't as threatening as his normal self.
Substitutions
Clichy (On 75') - N/A
Johnson (On 76') - N/A
Tévez (On 81') - 5
Somehow made himself look woeful with the 10 minutes he had on the pitch with some bad decision-making. Could have set up Adam Johnson with a simple pass but his through ball was poor. |

Fulham comeback stuns City
Manchester City surrendered their 100% record in this season's Premier League as Fulham stunned them with a second-half comeback in a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage.
City looked set to equal their best-ever opening to a top-flight campaign when Sergio Aguero's jaw-dropping adaptation to life in England continued with the seventh and eighth goals of his five-game City league career.
He made it 2-0 just seconds after the break but Fulham refused to buckle, with Bobby Zamora and Danny Murphy earning them a deserved draw.
The result was the first blow to City's title challenge and, coming four days after their first ever Champions League game, it cast doubt on the ability of Roberto Mancini's men to combine the rigours of domestic football with that of Europe's top club competition.
This game was the fourth time in the last four rounds of Premier League fixtures that City had kicked off before Manchester United.
They had been trumped by their arch-rivals on each occasion but arrived in west London determined to lay down another marker on a ground where they won 4-1 last season.
Fulham went like for like, manager Martin Jol keeping faith with his 4-2-3-1 system as he sought his first Premier League win in charge.
City went close to opening them up inside seven minutes after Edin Dzeko strayed offside when put through by Samir Nasri.
They continued to boss proceedings, and although Clint Dempsey sent a 25-yard drive straight down the throat of Joe Hart after 15 minutes, City duly took the lead three minutes later.
Gareth Barry found David Silva on the edge of the box, and he was allowed to turn and feed Aguero, who timed his run perfectly before sidefooting home.
Mark Schwarzer denied City a second goal three times in the space of three minutes, beating Dzeko to Aguero's cross, tipping Clichy's 20-yard shot wide and getting fingers to Dzeko's piledriver after another great move involving Yaya Toure and Silva.
The recalled Zamora ballooned a 30-yard shot into the stands as Fulham continued to be given the runaround, while Dempsey looked their only real threat, drilling another effort too close to Hart.
The frustrated home fans roared on encouragement as their side enjoyed a rare spell of possession but Fulham posed little threat to the City goal.
Jol emerged for the second half with a face like thunder, but whatever he said during the break appeared to be rendered void when Aguero doubled the visitors' lead straight from the kick-off.
Clichy pumped a diagonal ball forward to Dzeko, whose knockdown was fired into the bottom left corner by the Argentinian.
Aguero thought he had completed back-to-back Premier League hat-tricks - he hit one against Wigan eight days ago - three minutes later with an identical finish but he was narrowly offside.
The home side took full advantage of their reprieve when they finally created a gilt-edged chance in the 55th minute.
The build-up was of the City kind, ending when Dempsey threaded in the unmarked Zamora, who curled the ball into the top corner.
Zamora had been played onside by Micah Richards, who redeemed himself moments later when his last-ditch challenge stopped Dempsey making it 2-2.
Fulham's first-half lethargy had vanished and Barry was booked for chopping down Mousa Dembele, whose low drive was palmed wide by Hart after Pajtim Kasami replaced an ailing Damien Duff.
Hart excelled himself again by tipping over Dempsey's bullet header from a corner before Mancini took action, withdrawing Silva for Pablo Zabaleta midway through the half.
The visitors remained a threat on the break, Richards glancing wide from a corner.
But it was Fulham's pressure that told when they equalised 15 minutes from time, Danny Murphy's scuffed 20-yarder taking a huge deflection off Vincent Kompany and going beyond the stranded Hart.
Craven Cottage was rocking and Mancini was forced to make a change again when Adam Johnson and Carlos Tevez replaced Nasri and Aguero in quick succession.
The fresh legs almost told in the final five minutes when Tevez was denied by a brave Brede Hangeland block.
Sidwell was booked and Jol threw on Bryan Ruiz for the excellent Dembele but Toure almost had the final say when his 30-yard strike drifted wide.
Silap besaq Mancini ganti silva masa lead. |
