Manchester City 2 - 0 Birmingham
Hargreaves scores on City bow
Hargreaves scores 17 minutes into his Manchester City debut
Owen Hargreaves enjoyed a sensational Manchester City debut as he opened the scoring in his side's Carling Cup triumph over Birmingham at the Etihad Stadium.
Released by Manchester United in the summer after three injury-ravaged seasons, the midfielder drove home a superb 25-yard shot after 18 minutes and was deservedly named man of the match.
Mario Balotelli added a second before the break to secure City's passage into the last 16 and end the holders' interest in a much-derided competition that will never be dismissed by Hargreaves, as long as the former Bayern Munich man draws breath.
When Hargreaves released a video on YouTube during the summer of him being put through his paces tied to a treadmill, it seemed like the last act of a desperate man attempting to revive his career.
It turned out to be a masterstroke.
Interest was generated, with West Brom eager to seal a deal, and that in turn led to Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini making his move as the transfer deadline approached, with City clearly not in a position to secure all the midfield targets they were after.
Mancini did not expect anything quickly - and has not even named Hargreaves in his Champions League squad.
However, after virtually three years on the sidelines, punctuated by a couple of very brief appearances, totalling only six minutes of actual playing time, the 30-year-old is clearly a man in a hurry.
First, he got himself ready for action within three weeks. Then, 18 minutes into his debut, he scored.
It was some goal too, seizing on a loose ball as Carlos Tevez and Balotelli had their route into the penalty area blocked and letting fly from 25 yards.
The shot went like an arrow past Birmingham goalkeeper Colin Doyle and into the top corner.
City's fans erupted, bellowing "Fergie, sign him up'', just as they did when Tevez crossed the great divide two years ago.
That was a far more acrimonious move. Hargreaves' exit was the only plausible ending after spending so little time on the pitch.
Indeed, the goal was his first since April 2008, one of only two Hargreaves scored in 39 appearances for the Red Devils.
Although it was anticipated Hargreaves would be replaced at the break, the former England man re-appeared and lasted for another 12 minutes before departing to a standing ovation.
The good news is a previously stellar career is on the move again and Hargreaves will not need to get back to his peak for England manager Fabio Capello to take an interest given the dearth of top-quality defensive midfield men in the Premier League.
Balotelli could never be described as a forgotten man.
The Italian has tended to be overlooked though, as Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero went on their early-season scoring blitz.
With Tevez dropping deep, Balotelli was the focal point of City's attack and when Aleksandar Kolarov crossed from the left seven minutes before the interval, the former Inter Milan man neatly swept home his first goal of the season.
It was a good night all round for City as Kolo Toure also made his comeback after serving a six-month ban for a failed drugs test.
Toure made his mark too, being perfectly placed to clear off the line after Romanian goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon had dropped Jean Beausejour's free-kick, offering Curtis Davies the chance to send an overhead kick towards City's otherwise empty goal.
It was Birmingham's only attack in the first half of their first game in this competition since they stunned Arsenal in last season's final.
What was a joyous Wembley day turned out to be the moment Birmingham's season began to unravel, a process that became so dramatic it ended in relegation to the Championship.
Only Keith Fahey remained from that starting line-up and as manager Chris Hughton made seven changes to the side hammered at Southampton, he clearly feels this is one competition too many in a season where the Blues are also scrapping it out in Europe.
Birmingham were better after the break, without creating anything like the opportunity Toure had turned away.
Doyle denied Tevez and Toure near the end but a Manchester City line-up containing Nedum Onuoha - making his first appearance since chief executive Garry Cook resigned over sarcastic comments about his mother - and Wayne Bridge coasted home. |

Mancini: Tevez refused to play
Roberto Mancini says Carlos Tevez is finished at Manchester City after the Argentinian refused to come on as a substitute in the club's 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich.
Edin Dzeko was replaced by Nigel de Jong in the second half of the Champions League Group A match and soon after the City boss asked Tevez to warm up, but Mancini claims he refused to do as he had been asked.
Mancini now believes Tevez's position at the club is untenable.
Asked if Tevez was finished at City, Mancini said: "I don't decide this, but if I did, then yes.
"I helped Carlos for two years but I cannot accept this behaviour."
Tevez, speaking through an interpreter, gave little away.
In an interview with Sky Sports News he said: "I have been professional during all my time here.
"Last season I was the top scorer and I wanted to leave for family reasons - but I keep trying to do my best."
Tevez has had a tempestuous couple of years at City but this marks a new low.
Mancini is clearly fuming and it is difficult to see how there can be any way back for the 27-year-old now.
"He just refused to go on. I don't know why," said Mancini.
"I cannot be happy with this situation. Would something like this happen at Bayern Munich, AC Milan or Manchester United?
"I am the manager. I decide everything.
"I have helped him every time for two years, he has wanted to leave but I still picked him.
"The thing is there were still 30 minutes until the end of the game. We could still change it.
"Carlos didn't play at the start of the season because he has not had a pre-season for three years. He was not ready to play.
"If it was another player may be this could happen but for a player to refuse to go on in an important game like this is not right."
This would have been bad enough had it been the only problem Mancini had to deal with.
However, there was also the problem of striker Edin Dzeko shaking his head at Mancini as he was replaced by Nigel de Jong 10 minutes into the second half.
It was that change that angered Tevez, who was left on the bench throughout his side's Barclays Premier League win over Everton on Saturday, and it appeared Dzeko was equally annoyed.
"He was disappointed but he played a bad game," said Mancini.
"I wanted to keep the score down and not concede a third goal.
"It is the last time any player at this club does that."
Amid the carnage, City were fortunate their defeat was contained to just two first-half strikes from Mario Gomez.
It could have been far more. But the aftermath will be dominated by Tevez and assistant manager David Platt insists Mancini is the right man to deal with it.
"We are not going to lie. What happened happened," said the former England skipper.
"Roberto will sleep on it and look at it and dealt with it in the way he sees fit."
The mood contrasted starkly with Bayern who are top of the group with six points from two games thanks to victory courtesy of two goals by Mario Gomez.
After a good opening by City, the Bundesliga leaders took control and were ultimately good value for their victory.
Manager Jupp Heynckes said: "We chose the right time to score and then played very confidently.
"At the beginning of the game we were nervous and we did not do ourselves justice.
"We changed midway through the first half and came into the game.
"Franck Ribery has given a world-class performance, Bastian Schweinsteiger also.
"In the second half we played as a unified team.
"At the moment we have not only a great team spirit, but also act in harmony, a good foundation and outstanding individuals."
Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge concurred, saying: "This was a very good game from us. Manchester City also played very well in the first 30 minutes to show that they are a strong team.
"We played mainly in the second half, totally in control. It was a great team performance, with Franck Ribery and Jerome Boateng playing really strong."
Goalscorer Gomez said: "Manchester ran the ball well at the beginning.
"We were perhaps a little nervous, which is really inexplicable, because we are actually in a good phase.
"As a team we have from the 30th minute done well and ultimately deserved to win.
"I have not played outstanding, but scored two goals.

Manchester City suspend Carlos Tevez for two weeks after Bayern Munich controversy
The club confirm they will conduct a full review after the Argentine allegedly refused to play in the 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, with the striker not allowed to train or play
Manchester City have suspended striker Carlos Tevez for a maximum period of two weeks, following his alleged refusal to play as a substitute in his side’s 2-0 defeat away to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
The Argentine international stands accused by his manager Roberto Mancini, who revealed Tevez’s alleged dissent in his post-match comments before suggesting the player will never feature for the Eastlands side again.
Despite the 27-year-old’s denial of claims he refused to feature during Tuesday night’s clash, the club have taken swift action against the forward, with the player not permitted to train or be considered for selection during the next 14 days.
A statement on the club’s official website read: "Manchester City can confirm that striker Carlos Tevez has been suspended until further notice for a maximum period of two weeks.
"The player’s suspicion is pending a full review into his alleged conduct during Tuesday evening’s 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.
"The player will not be considered for selection or take part in training whilst the review is under way."

CARLOS TEVEZ COULD FACE GLOBAL BAN
CARLOS TEVEZ could face a worldwide ban from football after refusing to play for Manchester City.
FIFA are prepared to stop Tevez playing for any club if City, who last night suspended him for two weeks, can prove he rejected manager Roberto Mancini’s order to go on as a second-half substitute against Bayern Munich.
His claim that he did want to play and that the affair was a “misunderstanding” was yesterday blown out of the water by team-mate Pablo Zabaleta as City prepared to kick him out of the club.
Zabaleta’s confirmation that his close friend Tevez “didn’t want to play” strengthens City’s case that the Argentina striker has breached his contract.
FIFA vice-president Jim Boyce believes they have a good case to cancel his contract and then seek a ban preventing him from moving to another club.
Boyce said: “If Manchester City prove it, then write to FIFA and state the exact circumstances of what happened, then I believe FIFA should have the power, as they do for drugs-related and other cases, to ban the player from taking an active part in football.
“I would have no problem with that whatsoever. It hasn’t occurred before, but what happened was despicable.”
Boyce, who is life president of the Irish Football Association, also said the game’s governing body would be within their rights to prevent him signing for a rival club if City opted to release him. “People within the clubs and within the top level of FIFA have to consider that. If Carlos Tevez does it, who’s to stop someone else doing it the next week or the week after?”
Zabaleta, who was sitting next to Tevez on the bench during his bust-up with Mancini, told reporters: “Carlos didn’t want to play.”
City’s owner Sheikh Mansour and chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak are understood to have backed Mancini’s stance that Tevez should never play for the club again. Although City have not fined Tevez, the two-week suspension will keep him away from the club while they “review his conduct in Munich”.

City want RVP as Tevez replacement
Several British newspapers have reported that Manchester City are lining up Arsenal captain Robin van Persie as a replacement for the disgraced Carlos Tevez.
City manager Roberto Mancini has insisted Tevez has played his last game for the club, after revealing the Argentinean refused to come on as a substitute in Tuesday's 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, Tevez has been handed a two-week suspension while the club's legal department assess possible sanctions they can impose on the temperamental striker, with a contract termination yet to be ruled out.
And it now appears that Mancini has identified Van Persie as the perfect addition to his attacking ranks.
Arsenal's Dutch talisman has hit form recently, netting a brace in last weekend's 3-0 win over Bolton, and The Guardian, The Telegraph and The Independent all believe City have now firmly set their sights on him.
At present, Van Persie's contract is set to expire in 2013, and the striker earlier this week declared he was not ready to enter extension talks just yet.
"I still have almost two years left here, so for the moment that's fine. But I don't know, we will have to look," said the Dutch striker.
"I'm happy with my contract, I'm good. That's how it is, I can't say much more. I can't look into the future."
However, Arsenal will be aware speculation will continue to mount as long as he fails to extend his current deal, and the Gunners may eventually have to sell him if they do not want to lose him on the cheap.
City have already raided Arsenal once earlier this season when they swooped to sign playmaker Samir Nasri, whose contract with the Gunners had been due to expire next summer.
Meanwhile, all three papers also believe City are prepared to accept cut-priced offers for Tevez in the January transfer window, with The Guardian and The Telegraph both stating the Citizens will be lucky to receive anything in the region of £20million.
Tevez's current market value represents a huge drop from the £40m Corinthians reportedly offered City earlier in the summer. |

Blackburn 0-4 Manchester City
Mario Balotelli grabbed his chance wipe out the memory of Manchester City's bad night against Bayern Munich as City eased to a 4-0 victory at ailing Blackburn.
Balotelli drilled home City's second just before the hour and ran the home defence ragged in what was City's perfect riposte to the midweek controversy involving Carlos Tevez.
Adam Johnson's wonder-goal and late strikes from Samir Nasri and Stefan Savic wrapped up City's second half master-class leading furious Rovers fans to chant for the dismissal of boss Steve Kean.
Despite accepting Edin Dzeko's apology for his outburst at being substituted in midweek, Mancini had dropped the Bosnian to the bench and opted to give Balotelli his chance.
It was an inspired decision with Balotelli looking by far the liveliest of City's attacking options, particularly when Sergio Aguero limped off injured on the half-hour.
Rovers had started solidly enough but it quickly became apparent they would have to guard against City's speed and sharpness, with Chris Samba cutting out a dangerous Vincent Kompany cross.
The visitors had their first real chance in the 10th minute when David Silva cut into the box from the left and his cross was parried by Paul Robinson into the path of Balotelli, who blazed over.
Rovers responded two minutes later with a swinging cross from Morten Gamst Pedersen on the left, which was aimed for the head of Samba before being cut out by Joleon Lescott.
Junior Hoilett's pace troubled the City rearguard in the 16th minute as he scampered over the half-way line and sent Yakubu on the left, but he was denied by a fine challenge by Milner.
For all their neat possession, Mancini's men were struggling to unduly threaten the Rovers defence, with Silva guilty of spooning a 25th minute half-chance high over the bar.
City's striking options, already diminished by the suspension of Tevez, were further hit when Aguero limped off with an apparent groin strain.
Nasri came on to replace Aguero, and his first act was to screw a low shot towards the Rovers goal which was deflected out for a corner by David Goodwillie.
City's inability to find the cutting final ball surfaced again in the 35th minute when a fine move involving Milner and Nasri petered out when Samba beat Balotelli to a clearance in the box.
Balotelli stepped up his game towards the end of the first half, flashing a curling 37th minute effort wide then zipping in front of Samba to shoot into the side-netting.
City looked sharper at the start of the second half, with Silva shooting across the face of goal moments after the restart, then Balotelli driving a right-foot shot against the post.
City finally broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when Johnson picked up a half-cleared Kolarov corner on the edge of the box and swung a superb left-foot shot into the top corner.
And City extended their lead three minutes later when Balotelli got the goal his performance deserved, stealing in front of Steven Nzonzi to prod home a cross from the left by Nasri.
Nasri swept home City's third in the 74th minute after good work from Silva in the box, sparking a furious reaction from sections of the home fans who chanted for Kean's dismissal.
Substitute Mauro Formica forced the first real save out of Joe Hart with 15 minutes left on the clock then Yakubu blazed high over the bar but it was all in vain.
City scored their fourth three minutes from time when Nasri sent in a corner from the left and substitute Stefan Savic bundled the ball home through a crowded box. |

Man City vs Aston Villa Player Ratings
Manchester City go top of the Barclays Premier League after a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium.
Man City
Hart - 6
Kept the scores level just after 10minutes when Agbonlahor was clear on goal, and it was all City after that. Rather unfortunate not to have a clean sheet in this game after all the hard work his defenders put in.
Lescott - 5
Was spared embarrassment after his keeper and defensive partner came to the rescue. From Saturday's performance, it is not clear why Roberto Mancini favours him but if Lescott doesn't improve he could find himself on the bench sooner rather than later.
Kompany - 8
A great all round performance from him, clearing the ball off the line from a Warnock shot early in the game and scoring from a corner in the second half. None of the Villa forwards could find a way past this man.
Clichy - 6
Very minimal contribution from the former Arsenal man as he was repeatedly out-muscled by Heskey at both ends of the pitch.
Richards (Off 66') - 7.5
Could he be the solution to England's right back problems? Another commanding display from the England international.
Barry - 6
Not quite the attacking player he used to be but still competent in the middle of the park, keeping possession and distributing the ball well.
De Jong - 7
The hard tackling midfielder does all the 'dirty work' for the team and seldom gets any recognition whatsoever. His brute strength and tenacity broke down the majority of the Villa attacks, and made life a lot easier for his defenders.
Milner - 8
Was always present in the penalty box whenever City went forward. The Milner-Johnson combination in the wide areas looked unstoppable, and he was eventually rewarded with a curler from outside the box which left Given rooted to the ground.
Y. Toure (Off 66') - 6.5
Played the supporting role behind the main striker and was forced to be City's creative player of the day after City's flair players like David Silva started on the bench.
Johnson (Off 77') - 9
Great finish after capitalizing on a Warnock error, slotting the ball home 90 seconds after the restart. A man of the match performance from him, with a goal and two assists to his name.
Balotelli - 8
Scored in his last four games, and got on the score sheet again in this match with a brilliant overhead kick immediately after receiving taunts from the Villa fans.
Subs
Silva (On 66') - 6
Should have gotten a fifth goal for City.
K. Toure (On 66') - 6
Came on to fill the void at right back after Richards picked up a knock.
Hargreaves (On 77') - 6
Yes, he lasted the final ten minutes of his debut without picking up an injury!
Aston Villa
Given - 6
The former Citizen could only watch his defence crumble before his eyes.
Dunne - 6
The reliable Dunne had a poor game against his former employers.
Clark - 6
The Villa defence were guilty of ball watching on numerous set piece situations and his enthusiasm to close down players was his only saving grace.
Warnock - 6.5
An emotional roller coaster for the Villa left back as he was involved in goals at both ends of the pitch. Decent player going forward, but needs to work on his defensive abilities.
Hutton - 7
The right back was the only defender doing his job against Milner and Clichy. Matched anyone that attacked down City's left well and forced them out wide.
Delph (Off 77') - 6
Blessed with pace and good dribbling skills, but he didn't know what to do with it as he often gave away possession needlessly.
Petrov - 5
De Jong single handedly eliminated anything and anyone that threatened his back four, a task which Petrov failed miserably.
Ireland (Off 55') - 6
Nice to see both the City and Villa fans giving him a standing ovation when he was substituted. Lacked the killer pass and the driving runs which he was known for when he was playing for City.
Agbonlahor - 6.5
The first real chance for Villa fell to him, but he couldn't apply the finish. Plenty of energy and running all game but just no way past City's stubborn defence.
Bent - 5
The lone striker was terribly isolated. Lacked support from midfield, and could not even perform the basic task of holding possession upfront.
Heskey (64' off) - 5
Was probably instructed by his manager to help out defensively, but looked sluggish and unwilling to make the runs to help his forwards out.
Subs
N'Zogbia (On 55') - 5.5
Too little too late for the Villans. Was barely given a chance on the ball as he was left chasing shadows most of the time.
Bannan (On 64') - 5
Collected a yellow for kicking the ball away as he was clearly frustrated by City's overwhelming possession.
Albrighton (On 77')

Man City vs Villarreal Player Ratings
Sergio Aguero was the hero for Manchester City as his injury-time goal helped them to a crucial 2-1 win over Villarreal.
Manchester City
Joe Hart - 6.5
Spilled a shot by Rossi which Cani pounced upon to give Villarreal the early lead. Else, the England keeper had a relatively comfortable game, making a couple of good saves.
Vincent Kompany - 6
A reasonably solid display at the heart of City's defence but struggled to contain the movement of Rossi - particularly in the second half.
Pablo Zabaleta - 7
Was a constant threat down the right-hand channel for City and worked hard in defence as well.
Joleon Lescott - 6.5
Displayed good reading of the game and pace to deal with the Villarreal attack.
Aleksandar Kolarov - 8.5
One of the main sources of City's attack. The left-back was a constant threat on the left and it was his cross that led to Machena's own goal.
Adam Johnson (Off 40') - 6.5
Was strangely taken off for Barry just before half-time. Else, the winger struggled to make any meaningful impact on the game.
Samir Nasri (On 80') - 6.5
The former Arsenal man was lively in midfield but found it difficult to expose the Villarreal defence.
Nigel De Jong (Off 62') - 7
A typically solid game from the Dutch destroyer in midfield. Was taken off for Aguero at the hour-mark.
Yaya Toure - 8
Besides his poor finishing, the former Barcelona man was imperious at the heart of midfield for City.
Edin Dzeko - 7.5
Led the line well for City up front despite being the lone striker. Played a part in forcing the own goal by Machena. Could have done better with a number of chances he had.
David Silva - 7.5
Lost the ball which led to Villarreal's opening goal. Else, the Spanish playmaker was at the heart of City's attack all night.
Substitutions:
Gareth Barry (On 40') - 7
Replaced Johnson in the 40th minute. Provided balance in the City midfield but not the attacking flair they needed late on.
Sergio Aguero (On 62') - 7.5
Scored the all important winner during injury after coming on for De Jong.
James Milner (On 80') - NA
Villarreal
Diego Lopez - 8
The Spanish goalkeeper kept Villarreal in the game with some spectacular saves. But he could do nothing to stop Machena's own goal and Aguero's injury time winner.
Gonzalo - 7
The Villarreal captain marshaled the defence well and made some crucial last-ditch tackles to deny City.
Carlos Marchena - 6
The usually reliable Spanish defender was found wanting as it was his own goal that let City back into the game.
Cristian Zapata - 6
Was useful in attack for his side but his defending left much to be desired. Was often exposed by the pace of Kolarov.
Catala - 7.5
Was one of the best performing defenders for Villarreal on the night. Kept the likes of Silva and Johnson reasonably quiet.
Jonathan De Guzman (Off 88') - 7
Had a huge hand in his side's opening goal after stealing the ball from midfield. Else, he hardly put a foot wrong.
Cani (Off 82') - 8
Scored the opening goal after just four minutes, pouncing on a loose ball to stab home from close range. Linked up well with Rossi and showed great technique in midfield.
Hernán Arsenio Perez (Off 80') - 6
Offered little on the right wing for Villarreal. Replaced by Mubarak in the 80th minute.
Borja Valero - 7.5
The former West Brom man put in an industrial display in midfield. Could have done better with his long range shooting.
Bruno Soriano - 6.5
Did his job as an anchorman in midfield but was often outclassed by the likes of Nasri, Silva and Toure.
Giuseppe Rossi - 7.5
It was his long range shot that caused Hart to spill the ball for Cani to open the scoring in the fourth minute. Else, his movement was a constant threat to the City defence.
Substitutions:
Mario Gaspar (On 82') - NA
Wakaso (On 80') - NA
Marcos Gullón (On 88') - NA |
