Chelsea slap £25 million price tag on Sturridge

Chelsea have told Liverpool that they will not allow Daniel Sturridge to move to Anfield in a cut-price deal this week.

As ESPN revealed last week, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has set his sights on landing Chelsea forward Sturridge, who fits neatly into Liverpool's long-term plan to sign young, British players and mould them into world-class stars.

Yet Anfield insiders have revealed that Chelsea are holding out for a bumper fee for the England international, who is being valued at a whopping £25 million by the reigning European champions.

That figure would appear to rule Liverpool out of the race to sign Sturridge, although they will still raise the possibility of a season-long loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

The price tag would appear a little inflated for a young player with just two years left on his current Chelsea contract and who was valued at just £6 million when he moved from Manchester City back in 2009. His previous employers would be entitled to a cut of any deal if he were to move before Friday's transfer deadline.

“This might be a good opportunity for them,” said Rodgers. “Because we don’t have the money that some of our rivals have, I want to make the philosophy through the club that allows us to bring players from the Academy into the first team.

“We want to develop what this club has had for many years and develop top young players.

“Young players will run through a barbed wire fence for you. Older players will look for the hole or just turn back and not even go through it!

“But you get that freshness from players like Raheem. I like exciting players as well and he is a boy that excites you.”

“I have got to say I have seen a lot of development in Raheem in a short time,” said Rodgers. “He takes on a lot of the concepts and he is very good with instructions. Normally wingers want to do their own thing but he is tactically improving every day.

“He certainly won’t be going on loan and I believe that if we can help and nurture him in the right way, he will be a very good player for Liverpool.

“One of the things that I think I have specialised in is the management of top young players. He is certainly up in that bracket.

“I look at players like Scott Sinclair and boys of that ilk. Raheem is certainly up there. Maybe more advanced at that age.

“It is just about nurturing him. The great thing is that his attitude is wonderful. He is really focused. He comes in and he works well. He produces and he is effective on the pitch.”

Liverpool accept £3m Bolton bid for Spearing

The midfielder is set to complete a move to Reebok Stadium in the next few days after the Championship club matched the Merseysiders’ asking price for the 23-year-old.

Contrary to reports, it is understood that Spearing will move to Bolton permanently rather than on a season-long loan.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has sanctioned the departure of the Academy graduate as he tries to offload fringe players from his squad in the final days of the transfer window.

Rodgers is also willing to listen to offers for Charlie Adam, who has fallen down the Anfield pecking order following the arrivals of Joe Allen from Swansea City and Nuri Sahin on a season-long loan from Real Madrid.
        
The Northern Irishman has been told he has to raise funds to bring in new faces, as he bids to freshen up Liverpool’s attacking options in the next 72 hours with a wide forward his chief priority.

Spearing’s departure from Liverpool is expected to be confirmed before the transfer deadline on Friday night. He is set to slot straight into the Bolton team, where he will bring tenacity and energy to the midfield.

Speaking last week, Bolton boss Owen Coyle spoke of his admiration for Spearing. "Jay Spearing's a wonderfully talented young player, but he's a Liverpool player and it's not for me to comment on anybody's players," said Coyle.

""It's fair to say we're always going to be linked with players in that area, because we've said that's the type of player we're looking for."

Spearing has not been named in Liverpool’s matchday squads in their opening two Premier League fixtures although he has featured in all three of their Europa League games and played 67 minutes of the 1-0 win over Hearts last Thursday.
