Valencia goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand has wasted no time in endorsing himself as the man to replace Jens Lehmann as Germany's number one.
Lehmann announced his retirement from international football on Friday afternoon and on Saturday Hildebrand staked his claim for the vacant role, despite being dropped from Germany's Euro 2008 squad.

Bayern Munich struggles to advance in German Cup with close 4-3 win
FRANKFURT, Germany - Juergen Klinsmann avoided a potential embarrassment in his official debut as Bayern Munich coach when Toni Kroos scored a late goal to give the title holder a narrow 4-3 win over third-division Rot-Weiss Erfurt in the first round of the German Cup.
Bayern led three times but Erfurt fought back to equalize each time before Kroos slammed home the winner in the 80th minute.
Erfurt's goalkeeper parried a powerful effort by Christian Lell but Kroos pounced on the rebound and drove the ball into the roof into the net.
"We allowed too many goals," Bayern's general manager Uli Hoeness said. "You can't complain too much when you score four goals away from home and I knew it would be a tough match. But I didn't think we would concede that many goals."
Bayern was missing leading striker Luca Toni and several other starters because of injuries.
But Klinsmann's team took the lead after eight minutes through Philipp Lahm and appeared to be cruising. Massimo Cannizzaro finished a quick move by the home side to tie the game in the 22nd, but Lukas Podolski capitalized on a mistake by Erfurt's defence, which had been hoping for an offside call, to restore Bayern's lead only one minute later.
Substitute Albert Bunjaku brought Erfurt back into the match in the 47th.
Miroslav Klose put Bayern ahead again 10 minutes later, scoring his first goal for Bayern since March by tapping in from close range after Erfurt's goalkeeper Dirk Orlishausen could not hold a header by Ze Roberto.
In the 67th, Bunjaku tied the game again and Bayern was in danger of becoming the only Bundesliga team to lose in the first round of the German Cup, before Kroos notched the winning goal. Cannizzaro shot over the net from five metres out in the final minute to waste a chance of sending the match into extra time.
"We were hoping that it would not be that close and dramatic," Klinsmann said. "After the early goal we were hoping we would be able to cruise but we learned a lesson, that you can't relax even against a third-division team. We still have a lot of work ahead of us."
Bayern kicks off the defence of its Bundesliga title Friday against Hamburger SV.
In other games Sunday, Patrick Helmes scored 21 minutes into extra time to give Bayer Leverkusen a 3-2 win over second-division Rot-Weiss Oberhausen.
Mahir Saglik scored twice in Wolfsburg's 3-0 victory over fourth-division Heidenheim.
Newly promoted Hoffenheim edged fifth-division Chemnitzer FC 1-0 and Arminia Bielefeld struggled to overcome another fifth-division team, Durlach, 2-1.
Karlsruhe won 5-0 at Ansbach and Mario Gomez made up for missing several opportunities by scoring twice late in the game in Stuttgart's 5-0 win over Hanse Lueneburg, while former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann kept a clean sheet in his debut for Stuttgart |

Lucio To Commit Future At Bayern
Brazilian centre back Lucio looks set to commit his long-term future to Bayern Munich after hinting that he is looking to extend his current deal beyond 2010.
There has been much speculation over the summer months as to the future of Brazilian defender Lucio, but the 30 year old has seemingly put an end to the uncertainty by saying he is happy to stay at the Bavarian club.

Van Bommel becomes Bayern's first foreign captain
MUNICH, Germany (AP) -- Dutch midfielder Mark van Bommel has become Bayern Munich's first non-German captain.
"He is predestined for this position," coach Juergen Klinsmann said Friday. "Mark is multilingual, he can communicate with the entire team."
The 31-year-year-old Dutchman succeeds Oliver Kahn, who retired at the end of last season.
Bayern, which won the domestic double last season in Ottmar Hitzfeld's final year as coach, kicks off Klinsmann's reign Sunday with a first-round German Cup match at third-division Rot-Weiss Erfurt. |
