Effects of Covid pandemic edging aged and experienced physicians to call it a day

PETALING JAYA: General practitioners, particularly those more advanced in age, have fallen victims to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Most of those who had planned to wait for another year or two before they hang up their stethoscopes for good, are calling it a day now.
The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) estimates that as many as 200 clinics have already closed down since the pandemic hit Malaysia in March.
This has left many of their patients in the lurch, too.
The patients are the ones who will suffer the most, according to MMA president Dr N. Ganabaskaran.
“They will lose the close relationship they and members of their family have built with their doctor over years, if not decades, of consultation,” he told theSun yesterday.
“The patient-doctor relationship is important. It helps to produce better outcomes given that the patient will be more at ease in discussing their health issues with a doctor who is familiar to them over one who is not.”
Ganabaskaran said most people also prefer to see doctors who are compassionate because this quality helps to build trusting relationships with their patients.
The connection begins as one between a doctor and his patient and slowly progresses to them becoming friends until the doctor becomes a family friend,” he said.
He pointed out that a doctor can usually serve for up to 45 years and in that time, he would have been the physician for the grandparents, then the parents, and finally the children.
This type of relationship is what helps a doctor diagnose a health problem, he added.
Worse for the medical fraternity, and the people in general, is the fact that most of the doctors who are retiring are among the most experienced.
“Most of them have cared for a few generations of Malaysians.”
He said some retired general practitioners continue to work but only for minimal hours as a locum.
He attributed the decision by many senior doctors to retire to the pandemic.
“As seniors, they are in the high-risk group.”
Ganabaskaran said many senior doctors also made the decision to retire because they felt that it was time for them to pursue their personal interests.
“Many of them had to put such things off because of their commitments to their clinic and patients.”
He said that apart from the 200 clinics that have closed, more are likely to shut for good once the moratorium on loan repayment ends this month.
“This is when the real impact of the movement control order sets in.”
“Doctors spend RM250,000 to RM300,000 to open a clinic and they need to see about 40 patients a day to break even,” Ganabaskaran said.
“If they are still paying off loans for such an investment, they will have to renegotiate with the bank.”
The problem is exacerbated by a drop in patients because people are keeping away from clinics out of fear for Covid-19.
However, business is slowly picking up now, with nearly 70% of clinics close to being back to normal, he added.
Ganabaskaran said he expects most clinics to be back to normal by year-end.
