Manchester City vs Bolton Player Ratings
An under-strength Manchester City side managed to beat Bolton 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and David Silva were left on the bench allowing many of City's lesser stars to make a name for themselves in the encounter. Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini probably had the mid-week match against Porto in mind and chose to rest his leading stars.
Mario Balotelli and Yaya Toure were more than up for the challenge, however, even as the Italian seemed to be wavering in his focus with several missed shots until a 69th minute goal that helped seal the victory.
ESPNSTAR.com looks at how the players from both sides fared in Manchester City's 19th successive home victory.
Manchester City
Joe Hart - 7.5
The England stopper was ready when called for duty and was able to stop Ngog and Miyaichi from scoring when the two managed to escape the attention of City defenders and poke a shot at goal.
Pablo Zabaleta (off 19') - 6
He didn't stay in the game for very long as he suffered an injury to his right leg in the 19th minute.
Vincent Kompany - 7
The City captain made good challenges and was able to marshall his defence welll ensuring that Bolton players had a hard time stringing attacks together. He was even able to surge forward and lob a ball towards Balotelli in the 45th minute that could have gotten City a second goal.
Joleon Lescott - 7
Kompany's partner was equally solid at the back and he won most of his tackles.
Gael Clichy - 7
Clichy helped score the first goal of the match as his long-range shot was deflected in by Gretar Steinasson. He was generally active throughout the match but his inability to come back and defend properly did allow Nigel Reo-Coker a chance to break through ni the 34th minute.
David Pizarro (off 62') - 7.5
The Roma loanee was active during the hour that he was on the pitch helping move the ball around although he wasn't too creative up in attack except for a long ball in the 11th minute which found Balotelli in acres of space and behind the Bolton defence. Unfortunately, Balotelli himself thought he was offside so he delayed his attempt on goal giving the defence enough time to catch up and hassle the forward.
Gareth Barry - 7
Barry had an average game by his standards but he did help shield the defence as he helped break up Bolton's attacks by making several interceptions. He also twice managed to get Balotelli goalscoring opportunities even if the passes were not always deliberate.
Adam Johnson - 8
His determined run in the 69th minute down the right and between Zak Knight and David Wheater helped draw the defenders away from Balotelli who slotted the ball in after receiving Johnson's backheel pass.
Yaya Toure - 8
The Ivory Coast international was instrumental for City's attacks as he repeatedly pressurised Bolton's defenders into committing mistakes. In the 45th minute, he showed his ability to make quick decisions as he helped pass on the ball to an unmarked Balotelli close to the far post despite it looking as if he was about to lose his balance.
Samir Nasri (off 87') - 6.5
The Frenchman was unable to link up well with his team-mates but his dribbling and his runs were a constant worry for the Bolton defence.
Mario Balotelli - 7
The 21-year-old flattered to deceive as he had a number of early chances but he did not take them with full seriousness. The goal was at his mercy in the 4th minute but he still managed to shoot just wide. The Italian made amends in the 69th minute when he smashed the ball into the net but the goal came after a series of poor attempts and lethargic running in the first half.
Subs
Kolo Toure (on 23') - 7
After being handed an attacking fullback role, Yaya's brother enjoyed himself in the game. He was not much of an attacking threat as his skills were limited to stepovers but he did surge down the right often and crossed a ball in from the byline towards Edin Dzeko in the 90th minute that would have been a certain goal had David Wheater not gotten to it first.
Edin Dzeko (on 62') - 6.5
He was more of a target man who held up the ball than much of a goalscoring threat in the half an hour that he was on the pitch for. He did help create attempts for Johnson and nearly helped get a second goal in the 65th minute after Prattley's attempts to hastily remove the ball from the Bosnian's feet clattered against the crossbar.
James Milner (on 87') - N/A |

Manchester City boss Mancini would welcome Higuain, but not in exchange for Aguero
The Argentines have experienced mixed fortunes this year: the Citizens' star has been a revelation in his first season but the Real Madrid man has slipped down the pecking order
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has insisted he will not entertain any move for Sergio Aguero from Real Madrid, even if it involves a potential swap deal for fellow Argentina forward Gonzalo Higuain.
Aguero has been in scintillating form for Manchester City this season, scoring 21 goals and becoming a fans' favourite in the process. This hasn't gone un-noticed in Spain though, as Real line up a move for the former Atletico Madrid man.
Reports in Spanish newspaper Marca claim that Real will use Higuain as bait to try and tempt the Eastlands outfit into selling their prized asset.
Mancini was quizzed over whether he felt Aguero was using City as a stepping stone back to Madrid earlier in the season, but he dismissed these claims by pointing to the diminutive striker's five-year deal as further proof of his commitment to the club.
Marca's article claims that Madrid have "directly and indirectly" made their interest known to 23-year-old Aguero, but Mancini has stepped in, in an attempt to put an end to the rumours.
He said: “Higuaín is another top player, but we don’t want to sell Aguero for anything. It’s impossible for us to sell him. He will stay here, but if Higuain wants to come here, then we are happy.”
City are well endowed in the striker department, with Aguero, Mario Balotelli, Edin Dzeko and now the return of Carlos Tevez providing a pretty fearsome frontline.
Aguero's goals have helped City fans to get over the prolonged loss of his international compatriot Tevez, who has not featured for the club since a League Cup appearance against Birmingham City in September.
Mancini admits that Aguero was bought as Tevez's likely successor, but he is confident that the two can strike up a deadly partnership as the Premier League title race draws near to a conclusion.
“When we bought Aguero, we thought Tevez would leave the club,” the Italian confessed. “I know him and I followed him a lot last year. But Aguero, Tevez and Mario Balotelli could all play together. We would have to work very hard, but they could play together.
“If Carlos is performing in two weeks, he will be valuable for us for the last six or seven games. I think he needs a minimum of another two weeks training and during those two weeks it is important he plays in two or three games for the reserves.
“He will play in the reserves next week and I don’t think he will create a problem for the team as his behaviour is perfect.” |

Maradona: 'Aguero has to play for Real Madrid'
The Argentine legend believes that his son-in-law should move to Jose Mourinho's team at the end of the season, stating that it would be the best step for his career
Diego Maradona has advised Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero to transfer to Real Madrid in the summer.
The Argentine legend is of the opinion that the 23-year-old would reach the next level at the Spanish capital club, adding that Los Blancos' president, Florentino Perez, has "no limits" and could bring his son-in-law to Jose Mourinho's team despite resistance from the English club.
Maradona went on to say that Aguero should have joined Madrid instead of Premier League leaders City last summer.
"Kun [Aguero] has to play for Real Madrid. If he signed for them, it would be his big break," the Al Wasl coach told Argentine radio station Radio La Red.
"Even though he is flying at City, the best thing would have been to sign for Madrid. He made a mistake.
"Now, as he is doing so well, it will be difficult to get him from City. They will want to keep him because [manager Roberto] Mancini has him very much in his plans.
"However, it Madrid want someone, they get them. Florentino has no limits. It's a question of convincing City, but not with money because they have plenty of that."
Maradona went on to theorise that Portuguese ace Cristiano Ronaldo could reach new heights if partnered with the 23-year-old.
"If Kun was playing for Madrid they would close in further on Barcelona. We would be talking about Cristiano Ronaldo scoring 60 and more goals, because Kun would move the entire defence," the 51-year-old argued.
