Player Ratings: Valencia 3-0 Osasuna
VALENCIA

Ca駃zares 6 - had a very quiet afternoon on his return to first-team football after so long on the sidelines.

Miguel 7 - Was able to press forward like he always did under previous coaches and looked impressive.

Caneira 6 - Gave away to many needless free-kicks and was rarely tested down the wings.

Alexis 6 - Also did not have a great deal to do with Osasuna being forced to play just one forward.

Albiol 5.5 - Virtually invisible bar his involvement when Valencia passed the ball around the back four.

Marchena 8 - Constantly involved. Has a tendency to not stay quiet or out of things when he should, but is influential.

Baraja 6.5 - Has yet to rediscover the driving performances that made him a regular in the Spain squad.

Joaqu韓 7.5 - Looked to cause Osasuna down the flanks, but was kept at bay until making a great run through the middle for his goal late on.

Mata 7.5 - Also scored, but was unable to create much else going forward for Valencia.

Silva 8 - Had a strong first half, but fizzled out somewhat after the break and was not involved as much.

Villa 8.5 - Whether it was a penalty or not, it was still a great run and he also set up two more.

Subs

Edu 6 - Slotted into the side and although he did little that stood out looked comfortable.

Vicente 6 - had a hat-trick of crosses that failed to cause problems, but did stroll on occasion and lacked a sense of urgency.

Angulo 7 - Could have marked his comeback with a goal had Joaqu韓 picked out his run.

Canizares: Koeman's Destructive Decision Backfired

Santiago Canizares has broken his media silence, telling reporters that he has come to an agreement with Valencia to terminate his contract at the end of the season. The goalkeeper added that Ronald Koeman's decision to separate the squad was destructive.

Canizares, who along with two Valencia teammates, was axed by Ronald Koeman in December, affirmed to the press that the Dutchman was not the only person responsible for their separation from the squad.

"Koeman wasn't the only person responsible for what happened with Albelda, Angulo, and I. Koeman took a coaching decision, but if the club were smarter they would have detected that it was doing harm to the team, the entity, and the situation that we were going through. They had to cut some of his functions [at the club]," stated the goalkeeper.

"The same as Pilatos in the death of Jesus Christ, the club should have done much more, it was obvious that this decision would backfire. Koeman took a personal decision, but the club shouldn't have allowed the destruction of the team to take place."

The former Spanish international affirmed that it was him who asked his teammates to back-off when Koeman made the decision: "I asked my teammates to drop the subject when Koeman made his decision."

But despite all the controversy that has surrounded the club this season, one thing is for sure, from next week Canizares won't continue at the club. He will weigh up his options, and is likely to move to a smaller La Liga team.

"I've come to an agreement with the club to not continue next season. Right now I'm playing because the team need it. I am 38 years old. I have to think carefully whether playing football is my best option. Despite this, I haven't thought about retirement," he affirmed.

La Liga Preview: Barcelona - Valencia

Barcelona (3rd, 61pts) v Valencia (15th, 42pts)
When: 19:00 CET - Sunday, May 4, 2008
Where: Camp Nou, Barcelona

rcelona and Valencia are both gearing up for big changes in the summer despite having very different campaigns that have been considered to be underachieving by their board, fans and players.

Two old friends are responsible for the two clubs' fortunes in the main with Frank Rijkaard steering the Blaugrana to within a whisker of three trophies and Ronald Koeman picking up a pot, but then being sacked with relegation on the agenda.

For the Camp Nou giants, failure to win any silverware this season has meant that all the uncertainty and doubt that had been building up in recent weeks was finally able to come to a head.

The inquest into who is to blame can now begin with everyone from president Joan Laporta to coach Frank Rijkaard and from technical secretary Txiki Begiristain to every member of the squad being blamed.

As disastrous campaigns go, this may have been blown out of all proportion of course, because Bar鏰 are third in the league and reached the semi finals of the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

But the concern is that it is the manner in which the team played in certain matches that could so easily have made this one of the most successful in recent season at the club.

Missed Opportunities

Real Madrid are set to be crowned champions, but they gifted the Blaugrana more than enough opportunities to not only catch them, but also to overtake them and disappear into the distance.

In the Copa del Rey, a Valencia side that could not win for love nor money in the league proved to be too strong for a stuttering Bar鏰 side, even though that was brushed aside while Europe remained on the agenda.

Few had Barcelona down as favourites when they were drawn against Manchester United in the Champions League given the two teams' domestic form, but the English outfit showed their opponents so much respect that they could have been beaten.

With more incisiveness, or should that be any, Bar鏰 could have made their domination of the ball count in either leg and force Unitd to come out, but it was not to be.

Last summer, the arrival of four potentially match-winning players signalled that Bar鏰 were ready to compete, but it was not to be and now they are facing a battle just to finish as runners-up and avoid a Champions League preliminary round next term.

Down at Valencia, the word crisis would not appear to be as rash after the season that the regulars at Mestalla have been forced to endure under an incompetent board and an even more incompetent coach.

Quiqiue S醤chez Flores was sacked and Koeman was brought in from PSV with the remit of making changes to the playing style and the squad when and where he felt it necessary.

No Change There

The decision to outcast Santi Ca駃zares, David Albelda and Miguel 羘gel Angulo appeared strange at the time, but now looks even odder as the new man in charge, Voro, has brought them back without hesitation.

Stubborness appears to be the word to best describe Koeman's tenure with the Dutchman refusing to change his tactics or system even when everyone was telling him that things were not working.

A shocking run of form saw the club slip to within two points of the drop zone and only last weekend's victory, their first game without Koeman, meant that Valencia's fears were eased slightly.

Winning the Copa del Rey should not be undervalued because it does maintain European football at the club, but it did little to paper over the cracks of what was going on in the league.

Financial concerns have also now come to light under the new president, Agust韓 Morera, and that will also mean a busy summer at Mestalla with several players on high salaries and with high valuations expected to leave.

The three points in this game could enable Bar鏰 to keep pace with second-placed Villarreal, or will see Valencia finally ensure that they will be playing top flight football next term.
