Aguero vows: I'm going to get even better

Sergio Aguero has promised Manchester City fans: "This is only the
beginning for me."

Aguero is already a hero at Eastlands after banging in 21 goals in his debut season with the club to lead their twin assault on the Premier League and Europa League.

The Argentinian has scored 16 times in the Premier League and needs eight more in the remaining 11 fixtures to equal Fernando Torres' tally of 24 for Liverpool in 2007-08, which is currently the best first-season haul for a foreign player.

Aguero, 23, is delighted with his prolific form since his £35million summer move from Atletico Madrid, but claims he can do better.

"I was confident in myself when I moved to City," he said. "But with so many changes - it was another country, another club, another league, new team-mates and also a new language - I thought it would have taken a little more time to adapt to the club.

"Fortunately, I adapted immediately.

"It was really helpful for me to start playing well from my first match.

"I have to be honest. If you had told me before arriving that I would play like I did, I wouldn't have believed you.

"When I scored twice on my debut, I tweeted, 'This is the beginning of something big.' I wrote that because I'm always trying to achieve great things.

"I still feel the same way and I think this is only the beginning for me at Man City."

Aguero is desperate to end City's 44-year wait to be English champions, but reckons their fans will still think they have had a great season even if they lose out on the title to Manchester United.

The South American says the supporters will not be too disappointed at finishing as runners-up, because they know City are now firmly established as one of the country's top sides.

"The fans are crazy here, and their passion is understandable," he said. "Many of them are young fans who have never seen Manchester City win the title.

"The fans can't believe where we are. Fans here are different to
Argentines and if we don't win the title, I'm sure they will still say that we have had a great season."

Aguero also revealed how his City team-mates had teased him about his father-in-law Diego Maradona's infamous Hand of God goal against England at the 1986 World Cup.

He said: "Some of them said to me, 'Diego was clever for that first goal.' They joked a little about it, but that's all."

Sporting 1-0 Manchester City: Xandao backheel gives Portuguese impressive victory as Kompany limps off for visitors

The Lisbon club have been rewarded for their combative performance against the Premier League leaders and take a narrow lead to the second leg next week

Sporting Lisbon will take a lead to England next week in their Europa League round of 16 tie with Manchester City, after a 1-0 victory at the Estadio de Alvalade.

A classy backheel finish from Xandao early in the second half proved the difference between the two sides, as City failed to prove their credentials against a well-organised home outfit. Ricardo Sa Pinto's team created the best chances of the match, and only Ricky van Wolfswinkel’s nervousness prevented Sporting from taking a bigger lead to Manchester.

The hosts were first to create danger just three minutes into the game, when Daniel Carrico tried to find Van Wolfswinkel with a long ball, forcing Joe Hart to leave his place between the posts to nod away. The clearance fell into the path of Stijn Schaars who tried to chip it over the goalkeeper, but his effort went just wide of the goal.

City then suffered a heavy blow, as Vincent Kompany picked up a muscular injury. With the visitors momentarily down to 10 men, Sporting surged forward and almost scored in the ninth minute, but Hart punched away a Joao Pereira shot from inside the box.

Kompany eventually had to be replaced, and in the 11th minute, City went close to scoring for the first time, as Aleksandar Kolarov whipped in a cross from the left after a corner was played short. Kolo Toure rose unchallenged in the six yard box, but his header was denied by Rui Patricio's right leg.

The match was being played at a slow pace, with neither side able to stamp their authority on the game, but every time that City upped the tempo, they created Sporting all sorts of problems.

Sporting began the second half the brighter and opened the scoring in the 50th minute through Xandao. Joe Hart tipped away a free-kick from Matias Fernandez into the path of the Brazilian defender, who clipped home a backheel finish on the rebound after his first shot had been blocked by the goalkeeper.

The hosts were now in control of the game, and they almost doubled their lead in the 62nd minute. A Schaars pass opened City up on the left side of the box, where Insua, with plenty of room to operate, played the ball back to Van Wolfswinkel, whose shot from close range went straight against Joe Hart.

Mario Balotelli came on for Edin Dzeko in the 70th minute, and the Italian striker almost caused an immediate sensation, running down the left side of Sporting's box before cutting a low pass into the middle for David Silva, but the Spaniard’s shot went wide of the left post.

Aguero almost equalised in the 89th minute after finding himself in a one-on-one situation with Patricio, but the Argentine's chip over the goalkeeper was cleared by Xandao.

The result gives Sporting a narrow lead for the return leg in England, on March 15.

Tevez mungkin beraksi Ahad ini

2012/03/09

“Sikapnya (sepanjang permainan) memang kelas pertama,” kata jurulatih pasukan simpanan, Andy Welsh. Dengan hanya 11 perlawanan berbaki, City mendahului dengan 66 mata - dua mengatasi United, diikuti Spurs yang mengumpul 53 mata. Reuters

Premier League - Two weeks out for Kompany

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is set to miss their next two games at least after suffering a calf injury in the Europa League defeat at Sporting Lisbon.

The Belgian international defender limped off early in the first leg of the last 16 tie in Lisbon which City lost 1-0.

City said Kompany will miss the Premier League game at Swansea City on Sunday, the return leg against Sporting and the home clash with Chelsea on March 21 unless he recovered more quickly than anticipated.

"We have to wait one or two days to know the exact extent of his injury, but it is a problem with his calf," coach Roberto Mancini said on City's website (www.mcfc.co.uk).

"I hope to have Kompany back in 10 days or two weeks, but we have other solutions."
