Ustaz grifter? Man whose wife and baby slept rough in Europe on ‘vacation’ publicly accused of sleaziness, embezzlement
After gaining widespread notoriety last month over a (now-removed) Twitter post, the man who boastfully described how he, his wife, and his toddler spent a sojourn in Europe sleeping mostly on park benches (save for the occasional hotel check-in to plunder the breakfast buffet) has found himself making headlines yet again. We probably don’t need to tell you that the guy who bragged about how his wife and baby slept rough across Europe without complaining might very well be kinda trashy.
But if a Facebook post gaining widespread attention this week is to be believed, his alleged trashiness could occupy a whole new level. In the post, a local Facebook user has accused the man who viral on his travels of being an underhanded ustaz (or religious teacher), being sexually inappropriate towards students, and embezzling donations. The veracity of the allegations remains to be seen, and the accuser has yet to respond to questions from Coconuts KL, but the accusations have taken off like a shot in the social media-verse, so let’s see if we can’t unpack them, shall we?!
The man in question, a social media user known as Zakat Faiz, first attracted an unseemly spotlight in late September after his (now-deleted) Twitter and Facebook posts describing his European exploits first began to make the rounds online.
Many were appalled that someone complaining about the cost of travel (almost 50 euros a day, he cried) would nonetheless take it upon himself to travel to Europe — not to mention make their family endure unsafe and uncomfortable conditions while in foreign lands. For the record, Faiz claims his comments were taken out of context, but you can peep his posts in full above, courtesy of pnews.
The viral posts drew the attention of one social media user named Sha Ramson Abdullah, who took to Facebook to claim she recognized the man in the photos as the same individual who was the subject of several police reports accusing him of all manner of wrongdoing. Sha Ramson claimed — and again, the veracity of those claims remains very much in question — that our budget-traveling troubadour isn’t just the kind of cheapskate who would have his baby sleep in a park, but also much, much more.
Peep her post at the jump:
Sha Ramson refers to the accused as ustaz, and alleges that he begged her to not file a report of sexual impropriety against her, without describing the nature of said impropriety. Though she said she complied — on the grounds that his parents were allegedly ill and she felt sorry for him — she claims she later found out she was not the only, nor the first, person to make such a claim, maintaining that the other person filed a police report over the matter. There was no indication what, if any, police action was taken on the matter.
Among her claims was that Faiz made advances on another woman while her husband was in Mecca doing umrah (like a mini-Hajj), prompting yet another alleged police report.
She wrote that in July 2017, a musyawarah on the matter was held. While Sha Ramson doesn’t list the parties involved, the term typically refers to a council-like meeting involving community stakeholders.
She goes on to accuse the ustaz of giving a false statement during the meeting, and of teaching his disciples that the teacher was always above the husband in authority — conveniently establishing himself as the highest authority in his female students’ lives. Sha Ramson also shared screencaps of chats between between Faiz and his students, who accused him of raising funds to start an (unauthorized) school only to use the funds to pay off his own personal debts.
Prior to Faiz’s European vacation, Sha Ramson alleges that the ustaz had been soliciting donations from the public, only to end up going viral on social media for his shoestring European jaunt.
Annnnd that just about catches you up on the sordid, twisting, alleged, and presently unverifiable (but nonetheless astoundingly viral) story of Zakat Faiz and Sha Ramson Abdullah.
We’ve reached out to Sha Ramson for comment, and will let you know if she responds. And so far, we’ve been unable to locate the ustaz’s social media accounts, leading us to believe he may have disabled them, but we’ll keep you posted as we find out more.
