'Women Power' Rises To The Top
By P. Marilyn & James Kon
Bandar Seri Begawan - Women power is certainly on the rise in Brunei Darussalam especially in the academic and education fields. Yet it is imperative that this positive trend be encouraged by nurturing the girls to excel in their educational goals and career paths.
Dayang Apsah Haji Abd Majid, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education who was the special guest, made these pertinent observations when she spoke at the International Women's Day celebration.
It was organised by BAG Networks at the Orchid Garden Hotel yesterday.
The Deputy Permanent Secretary revealed that in the Ministry of Education, the teaching force in Government schools, in both primary and secondary levels there are 3,693 female teachers compared to 1,863 male teachers.
Looking at the student population in some of the government schools, one sees a similar trend she pointed out.
"Statistics showed that two-thirds of the students in Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan comprise girls while one third is boys at this premier college in the country. " Other statistics showed that Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al Muhtadee Billah currently has a higher number of female students, (1,333 girls) compared to male students (725 boys) and the Berakas Six Form Centre has 620 female students as compared to 410 male students respectively," she added.
Highlighting the increasing number of students obtaining government scholarship, there were 280 oversea scholarships awarded last year and out of it 174 girls received scholarships and 106 went to boys. Again from the scholarships figures, 10 females were sent abroad to do their masters programme compared to only seven males.
In the professional field like ACCA, BAR, she said that all were females while in medicine; six other females went to Canada with the scholarship.
Further giving her advice, she asked women to reach for the stars saying that Bruneian women not only can do it but also can do it even better.
"We have to prove ourselves, we can do our job and we can do much better."
"The country has continued confidence in us (women) as proven, by the present appointment of Dayang Hajah Salbiah binti Hj_Sulaiman as the permanent secretary of Prime Minister's Office, the third female permanent secretary appointed in Brunei Darussalam."
"Education is the key drivers in advancement, education is the very reasons why we are here," she added.
Some 100 invited guests from both the private and government sector yesterday attended the International Women's Day celebration that was held at Orchid Garden Hotel. The event was organized by BAG Network and is part of the organization's continuous recognition and support of its female staff's contribution to the organization and beyond. It was jointly sponsored by Royal Brunei Airlines, Orchid Garden Hotel, Women Business Council and Folec Communication.
This year's theme focuses on "Community Development", which aims to unite, network and inspire all the women for meaningful changes to the community.
To further the cause for Community Development, BAG Networks invited Datuk Dr Jemilah Haji Mahmood, President of Malaysian Relief Society (Mercy Malaysia) as a keynote speaker for the event to share her experiences and challenges on her current vocation and in providing humanitarian aid through Mercy Malaysia. Also, as part of Bag Network's ongoing support and commitment towards the community and local micro businesses, the Brunei Women's Council was invited to showcase and promote products made locally by Brunei women. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Police Solve Serial Car Break-Ins, Theft
By Amin Hosni & Yusrin Junaidi
Bandar Seri Begawan - The Royal Brunei Police Force has solved serial car break-ins and theft involving B$50,000 in cash, leading to the arrest of three Indonesian nationals who have been sentenced by the Magistrate's Court to three years and two strokes of the cane.
Separately, the police have also succeeded in solving four vehicle theft cases and have arrested three locals aged 24-30 years. The vehicles were reported missing between January and February 2007.
"Between last December and February this year, the Brunei Police Headquarters received many reports of money being stolen from vehicles. The total amount of money reported stolen was around B$50,000," said Acting Senior Supdt Pg
Hj Rakit bin Pg Hj Othman, OCPC of RBPF Bandar.
The police launched an investigation and captured the three - Deroi Penyimbang, 33, Roby Setiawan, 32, Putra Jaya, 37, all Indonesian nationals-who committed the crimes at different locations.
The investigation also laid bare the modus operandi of the trio. Their targets were victims who happened to withdraw large sums of money at bank counters.
They would follow the victim out of the bank without them being noticed by the victim.
The trio would get into their rented vehicle and follow the victim until he/she reaches his/her destination where the crime would be committed. As soon as the victim left his/her car unattended the three would take advantage by breaking the window of the victim's car to lay their hands on the cash.
The suspects were believed to have entered the country as visitors and stayed at a hotel in the capital.
Meanwhile, in the car theft case, the police have recovered four vehicles and the suspects will be produced before the court.
The police also solved some theft cases in which three locals were brought to court and sentenced to jail terms.
The police have urged the public to be more careful and be aware of the surroundings whenever they withdraw cash from banks or ATMs.
If anyone suspects that he/she is being followed by a stranger, they should immediately call the police hotline 993 or any police station nearby so that swift actions could be taken.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
